The return of the drive in?
 

This is apparently old news, and obviously correlated to the current pandemic closing local theatres, but evidently Drive in theatres have seen a huge increase in attendance during the lockdown. The Benifits are obvious, as you don’t have the normal risk of being near possible carriers.
As someone who never had the experience, this actually excites me a little. For one, I’d be able to actually see movies on the big screen. Second, I’d finally experience what it’s like.
I’ve read that Pa and NY have chosen to keep their collective drive ins closed (unless this changed recently, the article I found is a month ago, but was recently reported on the news the other day about the recent increase)
This also gives many films that are in limbo a chance to be screeend and maybe save the block buster season (summer time).

I'd go to one if I had a car. That sounds like a neat experience.

It sounds like a good idea. I went to an old drive in once for a double feature, about 12 years ago, before it shut down. I like the idea of it, but the audio was terrible and I struggled to hear it. So that was a problem, if that's a common problem.

My last one was a long time ago. Couldn't concentrate on the movie. There was porn going on in the car next to me!

For the life of me, I can't remember the movie. It was alright. Texas you see, wayyy too many burgers! I was young then, more like curiosity than the act being of any quality!

A lot of my early film going experiences were at drive-ins. Every other Friday night, my parents would put us in our pajamas and take us to the V Drive In in Vestal, New York for the double feature. I was the only member of the family who stayed awake for both films and this might have been where my love for the movies was born. I would love to see the drive in make a comeback.

In my life in America I have never been to a drive in.

I'd love to see the drive-in theaters make a comeback. Going to the drive-in flicks were part of life when I was growing up.

Ironpony makes a good point about the audio. It was pretty cheesy then, although we didn't really know the difference. But with today's technology they could supply good speakers with high fidelity. They'd probably even be wireless. Used to be once in awhile someone would drive off forgetting that the speaker was still hooked onto the window with a clamp. It would snap the wire right off the kiosk...:D

And it's true: lots of babies were conceived at the drive-ins. Most unintentional..:eek:

I really hope they really take off, it would be such a fun experience, especially with older films. I love going to see older films on the big screen.
Maybe older drive in classic from back in the day.

The audio is a pain point. With the advancement of picture quality like IMAX and all, it's difficult to see them make a comeback. Plus, the heat here in Texas is would not make them very popular in the summer anyways. It might be an okay fix till the time Covid-19 is rampant.

I live in Lubbock, Texas. We have five movie theaters, a Cinemark Tinseltown 17 screen, a Cinemark 16 screen, a Premiere 18 screen, an Alamo Drafthouse 13 screen and a Drive-In 3 screen.



The only one open right now is the Drive-In. It is a great theater and a lot of fun. The audio is broadcast over the radio airwaves (you don't need a license for a small radius of 200 feet or less) so you just tune your radio to the frequency and you hear the audio in your car with quality equal to the speakers in your car. It is nice. :)

lol I lived by the one in Ocala Florida for 2 years that was the only box office in the country a few weeks ago :laugh:

The drive ins around here did the same thing with the audio - over the radio - towards the end of their run in the late 80's. We used to bring a boom box ('member them?) to the drive in because our car speakers were terrible plus we could sit outside or lay down in the bed of a truck.

We only have one drive left but it's 45 minutes away and they kind of run it very tight/family oriented. They'll run you for the slightest infraction and forget about seeing any of the infamous "third film at the drive in" movies.
