Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
Craig's tenure has Bond has arguably been the most successful and well-reputed since Connery's. The other actors were very good but there were always major problems. Brosnan was a great Bond but he was hampered by too many awful scripts and mediocre directors. Dalton established the new dark gritty Bond, but the public was not ready for it yet and there was a 6 year lawsuit which stifled his tenure. Moore had some great outings as the charming funny Bond, but the quality of his films varied a lot. Craig did establish Bond as dangerous, sexy and entertaining.
Casino Royale in '06, was a strong promise for the Craig Era. It provided a good foundation but, 10 years later, I don't think it's a promise that was lived up to. At that moment, the Bond franchise transformed from comic book to an actual story with characters, great acting, refinement and nearly flawless directing. Quantum of Solace was rushed and very rough around the edges due to a writer's strike, but I loved its sense of minimalism, unique directing, fast pace questioning the series cliche tropes and it's political themes. Skyfall attempted to reconcile the fantasy action movie with the serious backstory, and I'm convinced that Craig's stellar acting could've turned that grandiose Batman clone into a very good movie. However, Spectre is the point where it collapses. At this point, the series went full circle and we're back at Tomorrow Never Dies again: at that good but not great territory. The biggest concern is that Spectre will spawn a trilogy based on a forgettable plot that ripped off Austin Powers. As his 5th movie comes around, this will determine whether he can provide a 3rd epic Bond film, or if he will end up old and tired like some of the other actors. None of my complaints on Craig's era have been about his remarkable performance, but largely MGM's decision to use weak plots and throw massive budgets to cover the problem. |
Re: Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
A dreary and boring era, much like its leading man.

Re: Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
Nice commentary on 007 over the years! I ain't never watched most of them, so my Bond was Brosnan and more recently Craig of course. I own Die Another Day, even. World Is Not Enough is a good one to me. GoldenEye was okay. Never saw Tomorrow Never Dies fully, played the game a bit at a friend's house, haha.
I am a big fan of Casino Royale! I know what you mean--it had a lot of promise. I thought Quantum was horrible and Skyfall's trailer was intriguing and the movie was NOTHING of the sort. Spectre was neat, but they really tried to end it with that one, which just clashes with the whole '007 is timeless' theme of the others. Nothing glaringly bad about it, nice production quality and good fights, but Casino Royale will definitely go down as the best of the newer ones. Unless the next one somehow outmatches it? Odds say otherwise. |
Re: Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
Daniel Craig has signed on for 2 more movies... they will also both feature Blofeld as the villain meaning Craig's outing as Bond will have a "Blofeld Trilogy".
And... the first of the two movies, is going to be a full on remake of one of the other films that featured Blofeld but no news yet as to which one it will be. |
Re: Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
MGM and Annapurna Joint Venture Near Domestic Deal for Bond 25.
The move helps MGM (which controls about half of the Bond franchise) to slowly but surely take control of its destiny and have its most enduring relationship in distribution since Barber pulled the studio out of bankruptcy and disbanded its distribution operation years ago.
There was a rumor that if Craig hadn’t decided to return, the higher ups were set to go with a new trilogy from Chris Nolan and Tom Hardy. It’s also possible that Monica Bellucci could return. Christoph Waltz, however, will not. |

I loved Casino Royale. One of the best Bond films.
Unfortuntely, that was the the only Craig Bond film I enjoyed. Skyfall, Quantum of Solace, and Spectre all bored me to death. |

Now that Christopher Nolan has taken himself out of the running, MGM and Eon are, reportedly, going for one last push towards a “name” director with Danny Boyle atop the list.

Re: Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
Can't say much about the Craig-Bond era (or Bond in general) as I've only ever seen Skyfall, but it was a fantastic movie, one of the best of 2012 in my opinion. All I can say is if his last Bond film is as good as that, I would be content to watch it, though I believe I have some catch-up to do!

I like your comment about the series going from comic book to more serious films. It was a good move for the franchise. Otherwise the direction would have just degenerated into farce and self-parody. I always look forward to the next Bond film. And hopefully they'll continue to resist the tremendous downward pull toward PC. ~Doc |
Re: Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
has stamped his authority on the role with his witty, manoholic take on the character to take down any man related to a terrorist organization threatening the safety of england and MI6 in general, like his era and like his whole take on the character, all i can say is he made his bond a long standing one, i like how his seriousness and assassin instincts that he portrays while tracking down someone

Brosnan > Connery > Craig

Re: Daniel Craig Era of James Bond
It would appear that the next movie, James Bond 25, (as we all know will be Craig's last)... but will be written and directed by Danny Boyle!!!!
