Guilty Pleasures?

What are your cinematic guilty pleasures; movies you are reluctant or almost reluctant to admit liking?

Mine are:

1) Tombstone
2) Legends of the Fall
3) A Perfect World
4) The Breakfast Club
5) Uncle Buck
6) Mrs. Doubtfire
7) The Toxic Avenger

Marcellus 02-27-02 03:42 AM

When your friends comprise of 16 year old boys, Shakespeare in Love becomes a guilty pleasure :P

The Silver Bullet 02-27-02 06:32 AM

Around you guys I don't have many guilty pleasures.
Around my offline friends, my taste is movies is "pathetic" or something. You know. Dr. Strangelove; 2001: A Space Oddesey; Traffic; Lawrence of Arabia. Unless you like crap over here, it's basically a guilty pleasure. Small minded town of ****e.

My guilty pleasures here...

The theme from Dragon Heart.
The Lion King.
Dumbo.

Holden Pike 02-27-02 07:03 AM

Here's my all-time biggest one: Xanadu (1980).

spudracer 02-27-02 09:41 AM

Holden, your link didn't work so I edited it out. :)

Guilty Pleasure:
Frequency

I have some others, but I can't really think of them. I'm kinda upset that Karl here would list Tombstone as a guilty pleasure. What guy out there doesn't have this movie memorized? I love it. :D

sadesdrk 02-27-02 12:30 PM

Didn't we try to have this thread topic before?
My guiltiest, guilty pleasure of all time is the Saved By the Bell Movie. Beat that.:p

Fez Wizardo 02-27-02 12:57 PM

I shamefully enjoy all Troma films

even more shamefully I'm trying to post everywhere to increase my post count so I can have an avatar. How many do I need ? :D

Yoda 02-27-02 01:05 PM

You need 50 -- but I can lower it for you if you really want. :)

Fez Wizardo 02-27-02 01:17 PM

1 Attachment(s)
can I have this as my avatar please? I made it myself (and I'm a very proud man)

Yoda 02-27-02 01:19 PM

Well, you'll have to upload it yourself...what I mean is, I can lower the requirement to 25 posts if you'd like. :)

firegod 02-27-02 01:21 PM

I really don't have any, although some of my movie buff friends would probably consider almost all of my favorites guilty pleasures. The closest thing I can think of is The Last Dragon, which I loved as a kid and still think is an ok movie, if very cheesy.

sadesdrk 02-27-02 01:25 PM

firegod only has 12 posts...and he has an avatar.

Yoda 02-27-02 01:32 PM

50 is the minimum for a custom avatar. I think anyone, with or without posts, can grab one of the publicly available ones.

firegod 02-27-02 01:33 PM

It is a preexisting avatar. The avatar help page says that you can choose one of those with 0 posts, but that you need 50 to add your own.

Fez Wizardo 02-27-02 01:45 PM

no need to complicate, i'll just wait till I have 50 posts, cheers anyhow. :)

I second that. I just flat-out enjoy watching that movie...even though I know it's sort of dumb.

Holden Pike 02-27-02 06:41 PM

Yes, we did this topic not too long ago (you could have fixed the link rather than erase it, Spuds). HERE it is.

Enjoy.

mecurdius 02-27-02 07:43 PM

Whipped and any disney movie.

Guy 02-27-02 08:21 PM

Guilty Pleasures:

Cabin Boy
Throw Momma From the Train
Penny Marshall flicks

sadesdrk 02-27-02 08:24 PM

No one should feel guilty about Throw Momma From the Train...it's a quality film, man. Enjoy!

Yoda 02-27-02 08:24 PM

How DARE you feel guilt over liking Cabin Boy! :)

firegod 02-28-02 12:13 AM

David Letterman's single best performance in a major motion picture!! With the possible exception of Beavis and Butt-head Do America. :)

At the time I was rushed and just took it out so people wouldn't start complaining about not being able to open it up. I forgot about it, of course, so there you go. :)

AKA23 02-28-02 12:10 PM

Karl, how can you say that A Perfect World is a guilty pleasure?? Can you expand a little bit on that? I consider it a masterpiece that was far more deserving of Oscar consideration than the majority of the other films of that year and one of Clint Eastwood's most engaging films as a director. What is it about it for you that makes it a guilty pleasure?

sadesdrk 02-28-02 12:18 PM

More guilty pleasures:
Encino Man
Clueless
She's All That

Yoda 02-28-02 12:21 PM

I despise She's All That. I despise Freddie Prinze Jr., too. But I do dig Encino Man. I saw it in the theaters when I was around 8 years old...it was hilarious.

spudracer 02-28-02 12:32 PM

I'd say of your guilty pleasures Sadie, She's All That isn't like you.

sadesdrk 02-28-02 12:41 PM

Isn't like me? You don't think I would watch such crap? Or are you making some joke that is completely lost on me?

Fez Wizardo 02-28-02 12:58 PM

[sarcasm] I can't stop watching "dude, wheres my car?" [/sarcasm]

just kidding.

more seriously I enjoyed 10 things I hate about you - is that normal? what about Southpark: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, I thought that was genuinely hilarious - as a matter of fact I feel like watching it now

Yoda 02-28-02 01:02 PM

I thought 10 Things I Hate About You was pretty good, too. It held my interest. Ditto for Dude, Where's My Car?, which I saw with two teenage friends, and which caused me to laugh my a** off.

Fez Wizardo 02-28-02 01:15 PM

hehehe i thought dude where's my car was criminal!

how did it get made! :)

(hold on ill insert the sarcasm tags into my post :D)

Marcellus 02-28-02 04:02 PM

South Park movie isn't a guily pleasure...............it's sheer brilliance ;)

Fez Wizardo 02-28-02 05:51 PM

mmm another one - charlies angels normally this type of flim i'd compare to wild wild west and absolutely detest but it keeps giving me a cheesy grin damnit

Steve 02-28-02 06:00 PM

How is Clueless a guilty pleasure? It's brilliant. :)

Marcellus 02-28-02 06:01 PM

*sigh*

I will admit that a guilty pleasure is Scary Movie.
I usually hate those cliched teen movies........but I laffed my *** off

Monkeypunch 02-28-02 11:53 PM

I totally loved "Howard The Duck." Top that....if you dare!

firegod 03-01-02 12:16 AM

It's a guilty pleasure if anyone knows me. I typically do not like what I call "life-affirming" generic Hollywood films. These movies are usually too fake for me to enjoy.

A Perfect World was kinda like that, kind of cheesy. But it was charming and I just enjoyed it. I will say this- and I will get a lot of heat for this- I enjoy Kevin Costner more than I do Kevin Spacey or John Travolta. Those guys just nauseate me for some reason. Way overrated, too.

Untoppable.

mightymose 03-01-02 11:31 AM

I'm with Spuds. I loved Howard the Duck when I was a kid, though I really don't remember it very well. I'll have to rent it to see if it's as bad as people say it is.

Other guilty pleasures:
Charlie's Angels: ****, A$$, and Hair... doesn't get any better :)
Kung Pow: As I said before, people left the theater b/c we were laughing so hard... drunk though, so that may have helped.
Most Pauly Shore movies.

Oh, and by the way... South Park wasn't a guilty pleasure, it was just damned funny! We were getting yelled at to quit laughing in the theater, and we hadn't had a drop to drinK!

sadesdrk 03-01-02 11:34 AM

I liked Charlie's Angles. Am I supposed to feel guilty about it?

mightymose 03-01-02 11:37 AM

Nope... but it does make me wonder :)

I thought the scene where Cameron Diaz is shaking her booty in front of the mirror in little kids underoos was quite possibly cinematic perfection ;D

Yoda 03-01-02 11:40 AM

Indeed. It was really a booty kind of movie, wasn't it? Puts Citizen Kane to shame.

Fez Wizardo 03-01-02 11:40 AM

i feel guilty because it's cheese! and not the mature type either!

cheese cheese cheese cheese cheese, not melted, not grated, just a big slab, with product placement scattered all round.

It's like taxi - i felt guilty for enjoying that as it was just juvenille testosterone humour.

spudracer 03-05-02 12:11 PM

Hope-- wait a minute...I know what you're trying to do here. :D

Romeo Must Die is a guilty pleasure. I enjoy it for some odd reason unknown to me.

Yoda 03-05-02 12:13 PM

I concur; I liked watching that. Or, more accurately, I liked fast-forwarding to each fight scene. :yup: Kiss of the Dragon had some awesome action, too. Was worth renting...

spudracer 03-05-02 12:22 PM

I have a lot of guilty pleasures since some of you wonder why I have some of the movies I do...:D

patti 03-05-02 04:20 PM

iluv2viddyfilms 10-26-04 05:06 AM

Orca. I get a kick out of it for some reason. It's how Jaws shoulda been done.

and Adventures in Babysitting is great to.

Around the World in 80 Days had funny points in the movie, but they didn't show much of the world, did they?

A "guilty pleasure" in terms of movies are those flicks you know are just awful, but for whatever reason you enjoy them greatly anyway. It may be a personal favorite, but if you voice its praise aloud you'll get some strange looks because, objectively, even you know it's not at all good. It's a piece of crap you adore in spite of itself.

I'm not sure I agree with your definition Holden. I think a better definition is that I know you and most everyone else who knows about movies thinks my movie (guilty pleasure) is awful, but I don't.

I don't think Sleeping with the Enemy is awful. I think it is good. I just know that most people who know about movies think it is awful (and I respect their opinion however misguided).

Monkeypunch 11-05-04 12:24 AM

Howard the Duck

Rock and Roll High School

I disagree. If you truly think it's a great movie, then why would you be guilty about it? Just because of perceived public opinion or peer pressure? No, I think a true guilty pleasure has to be a flick you realize is a hunk of *****, but you love it anyway. Otherwise we're just talking about something you consider underrated or underappreciated. Guilt is something else entirely.

My ultimate guilty pleasure will always be Xanadu. Just terrible in so very many ways, and a complete failure from conception on down. And yet....

SamsoniteDelilah 11-05-04 01:37 AM

Xanadu (especially the "I'm Alive" sequence)
Never Been Kissed

By your definition, I would need to change my list then. I too was thinking a guilty pleasure was a movie like Legally Blonde that might be considered a fun popcorn flick that would never be up for an oscar....or, a flick your peer group would groan at...like a kids movie.

Hunk of ***** I love anyway...

George of the Jungle
Bedazzled
Beach Party (1963)
...and all those other Annette and Frankie beach movies.
