Yeah, this was an exercise in learning that I just don't really watch contemporary movies anymore. 20 years ago, I used to see 2-3 contemporary movies per week (in the theater) now I see maybe 5 per year.

This is the decade in which I have watched the least amount of contemporary cinema, covid being a major part of that but the slow demise of MCU, horribly derivative and pretentious Oscar bait etc...plus the proliferation of other, better, cheaper ways of watching movies but some of my faves....semi - ranked:

1. 1917
2. All Quiet on the Western Front
3. Parasite
4. Soul
5. I'm Thinking of Ending Things
6. Spider-Man: No Way Home
7. Knives Out
8. The harder they Fall
9. The Green Knight
10. The Guilty

I still can't bring myself to watch that. The original from 2018 was really good, I can see no reason why anyone would want to remake it so soon in another language.

John McClane 01-09-23 11:17 AM

Black Widow - the best Marvel movie to date

The Outpost

Boss Level

Without Remorse

Interceptor

I've not seen a lot of the highly regarded films yet of the past couple of years, however the one film that absolutely floored me with brilliance, and class, and artistry that I think is the best of this decade so far AND is David Fincher's best film, topping out even the coveted Fight Club is Mank.

Fully agreed. For what it’s worth, I felt the remake was ‘exactly the same’ but lacking punchiness.

I havent seen many movies that impressed me since 2020, except the French movie Mandibles. That was a great movie and only 70 minutes long. I will use your lists here to guide me into new good movie territory.

The new movies from the 2020's that I have seen January 10th - 12th

Prey -
- A good predator movie, I enjoyed it.
Do Revenge -
- A decent high school teen movie
Thor: Love and Thunder -
- I liked this Thor movie, best one in the series imo.
X -
-That was one weird horror movie, I liked the ending though.
Barbarian -
- A decent horror/thriller movie.
The Menu -
- Not a bad horror comedy movie, Ralph Fiennes does a good job playing this evil and twisted lead chef.
007: No Time to Die -
- A good bond film, not the best in the series though.

Tramuzgan 01-13-23 06:59 AM

I didn't really look that hard, but it's The Bad Guys. What a pleasant surprise. It's like they brought Tex Avery back from the dead.

2022:
Bullet Train (The beginning may seem convoluted but after that all the story lines start coming together for fun and funny ride.)
