Re: Pets

If you have the pic online on MySpace or something, simply call up the pic on your site, then right click it and click view image. Then copy the info from the address bar to your clipboard. Come to MoFo and, in your post, click the image button on the editor. Paste the link into the box and you are all set.

...no pets right now, but here are a few scans of pics I took of my dog we had while growing up, "Angel". When we got her as a puppy, she was listed as a lab/collie mix... but when we went for her 6 month checkup, the vet said it looked like there was a mistake, because she had the markings of a newfoundland... it became obvious pretty fast that was the case.. a lab/newfie mix, and by the time she was full grown she was 120lbs, had the classic look, and she acted just like a newfie... she was a wonderful dog, and friend.

Re: Pets

We are going to get more photos on the computer, but for the time being, here is another photo of Ulysses. My daughter Sarah took it and it was exhibited at a gallery. It's called Prison Life. The reason Ulysses was imprisoned in this case was that he had broken both bones in his right rear leg. We made him spend all his time in this large travel goodie, and the vet said he healed as perfectly and as quickly as any cat he'd ever seen, and all in FOUR WEEKS!

Anyway, this is Sarah's work here.

Ulysses was a stray cat at my wife's school. Our beloved Velvet died on the day that George W. Bush was re-elected. She was 16 1/2, and I wrapped her up in our fanciest towel and hugged her all night, since I was the only one there that night. The next day, the city came to dispose of her. The very next week, my wife, who teaches at Ulysses S. Grant Elementary, brought this guy home as a complete surprise.

aww that's a lovely story Mark, a peaceful end to a long life.

Nebs - Boris is gorgeous! I want him!

Memnon - Angel was def a Newfie, isn't it lovely to have memories of growing up with pets :)

I've just spent two hours in the park with a pair of great little girls who found a stray dog up there and didn't want to leave it there cos it was getting dark. We walked around for ages, and just when I'd sent the girls home cos they were getting cold, and I'd just decided that I'd better take it home, a passerby thought she recognised it and took us up to where it lived. It wasn't that that far away, but the owner wasn't all that appreciative when I knocked at the door - just said oh yeah he got out a few hours ago! miserable git why weren't you out looking for it! :(

Vega Victoria Von Huelsman Johnson
1996-2008

Hello my MoFo friends....I apologize for being absent for so long. I really have missed you. There have been events happen in my life over the past 6 months that have significantly changed a lot of things for me...some good changes and some not so good. I have actually stepped back from a lot of things in my life during these last months that I am now entering into once again. Overall, this time has been very fruitful.

Since I had posted about her here before, I thought I'd update you on the passing of our German Shepherd, Vega (the picture is from our two-foot snowstorm in central Kentucky in 1998). We got her from a breeder in Kentucky and spent my first full paycheck at my first pastorate out of seminary in the summer of 1996 just to get her. Due to my love for astronomy, we decided to name her after the brightest star in the summer constellations, Vega- (not the singer Suzanne or the car)- which is Aramaic for "swooping eagle." Even then, I was thinking to the time when she would no longer be with us, but I would have some sort of stellar monument to her when I would stargaze. Anyway, she was a solid dog, fantastic temperament with all people and keenly dignified and intelligent, as are all GSD's.

After about 4 years of suffering through severe hip dysplasia and due to complications from her pain medication, we had to put her down back on February 19th of this year. You can imagine the bond we'd struck with her since my wife and I don't have a child and she lived indoors with us.

Signing the permission waiver to administer the euthanatic drugs was one of the most difficult things I believe I've ever had to do, even though we knew this time was coming and it was the best for her. Since last Thanksgiving, she had gone downhill quite a bit and her already decreased mobility was cut in half. In some ways, I believe she was telling us she was ready to go. Even going out to use the bathroom for her was an ordeal; she would just plop down in the yard from exhaustion before she could even go as if to say, "that's it." The way she'd look at me then, in such a foreign moment of lost dignity for her, was her giving in. A week later, we brought her in to the vet because her urine was abnormally dark. That was when we learned her liver was failing. It was a no win situation by then.

I have been surprised by how much I've grieved over her. But I am ultimately heartened by remembering how much life she gave to us...even up until the end. Many of you have lost pets before, so you know what I'm saying. I simply just wanted you to know.

Resurrecting an old thread here, sorry, but I felt like showing off my babies.

I have two cats, two rats, five adult Oriental firebelly toads, four juvenile Oriental firebelly toads (though I'm not keeping the juveniles. They'll go to a new home once they're big enough) and one betta fish.

Cute family... even the rats... :) How'd you end up with them? And do the cats give you fits about them?

I've always thought rats were cute and when I was a kid I knew a few people who had them. I always wanted one growing up, but wasn't allowed to get one. So shortly after I got my first job, I got my first rat (without permission from my parents, who were less than thrilled about it), which I named Templeton.

Rats are actually wonderful pets. They're intelligent, affectionate and much more clean than you might think (provided, of course, that you keep up with regular cage cleanings). Just like other domesticated animals, they come in a pretty wide variety of coat colors and other variations. There are hairless rats, rex rats (with curly fur and whiskers), dumbo rats (with large, low-set ears, like my boys), Siamese rats (marked like a Siamese cat), and an endless list of color patterns like hooded, capped, berkshire, self, etc. There are even rat shows, where breeders show off their best rats for ribbons and other prizes.

My current two are numbers 19 and 20. I don't think I could ever see myself without at least one rat in my life. However, there are times that I wish I never got into keeping rats. They have a lot of health problems and the average life expectancy is only 2-3 years - just long enough to get really attached.

But, no matter the heartache, I just can't say no to a face like this:

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walt.../goobclose.jpg

As for the cats, they're not allowed in the room where the rats are kept even though I doubt my cats would actually do anything unless one of the rats got out or the cage door was open. My cats do not hunt even though they are allowed to go outdoors. Also, my cats seem to have more interest in sleeping on the bed in that room than in the contents of the cages. However, Goobers and Dots are terrified of the cats and I don't want them getting stressed out. Some of the rats I've had in the past though could probably hold their own in a fight with the cats.

Yep, I agree. I've had probably seven or eight rats (ended up with a litter) in the last ten years or so, and they've been some of my best pets. They're sweet, clean, and they aren't as anxious as other rodents or rabbits. My favorite was named Bob, and although he looked like a mangy sewer rat, he was a sweetheart. :)

Caitlyn 07-16-09 12:49 PM

I wouldn't mind having a couple of rats if I had a bigger place so I could keep them away from my cats...

Re: Pets

We had a hamster for a while and it was a great little thing, which our eldest doted on so much that when it died she went into full scale mourning.

I, of course, did the decent thing and went to the pet shop to get a replacement but they had run out so ended up with a gerbil. Bad move.

Besides our eldest hating its tiny guts he was a randy little devil with a pair of swingers which, if they were in proportion to a human, were the size of medicine balls. He went back to the store. :(

I'd love a 3rd Jack Russell (was offered a Collie pup a few weeks ago but declined) but suspect they're just too mad for me in my present state of disrepair. ;)

You should get a Boston Terrier Tatty... they have a lot of personality and are one of the smartest dogs I've ever seen...

Re: Pets

The Boston Terrier shares an ancestor with the Jack Russell, I've just read, so they could be right up my street. If they're a bit calmer I might seriously look into getting one.

I've been too long without a dog. :)

Tatty even though he is half Jack Russell people comment about how calm he is :yup: so I am lucky :yup:

Yeah, male rodents tend to be rather... well endowed. Rats are no different which is why many people prefer females. I, however, like the boys much better. I've solved the unsightly genitalia issue by neutering them - which has the added benefit of making them able to have "play dates" with a pair of females that belongs to one of my coworkers.

What's the other half? Judging by his name and choice of plaything (and the fact that he's a bit ginger) I'm guessing it's Boris 'Boom Boom Broom ... ermm ... cupboard' Becker! :D

Our first Jack Russell had an on/off switch (not literally, that would be silly :p). She could spend days lounging in front of the fire then suddenly go into attack mode and chase off invading German Shepherds or milkmen.

I think that's why I like Jack Russells - they're kinda like Al Pacino in that they're only little but they make one hell of a noise. ;)

A bit drastic, ain't it? I'll never look at Werther's Originals in quite the same way... ;)

Nah, I don't think so. There are benefits to neutering for both them and me. Besides the fact that it allows them to interact with their "girlfriends," studies have shown that neutered rats live longer (though these two are the first I've done it with, so we'll see) - which is a very good thing for them, considering the short average lifespan of a rat. Castration also seems to have stopped them from leaving the little droplets of urine everywhere like intact males tend to do - which is a very good thing for me.

The other half is a Shih-Tzu so when people ask me what breed he is I say a Jack-s**t

You must have a really cute cat, then.

I wonder, though, is yours as fat as mine?

No he's not that chunky. But he does sleep like that.

Maybe that's a trait of ginger and white cats... :D

This is my dog Pups, I found her 4yrs ago, abandoned down a country lane. I was taking her to the rescue centre, to be rehomed but she suckered me with her big brown eyes. She loves the car, but not to keen on her harness!

Aww she is cute :yup: so lucky she found you :yup:

shapeshifter 07-20-09 09:12 AM

She' s a great character, can't understand why she was dumped? was expecting all sorts of bad behaviour, but no she was well trained.
But it was holiday time when i found her, & a lot of animals are dumped then.
Hey their loss & my gain :)

I decided to take some photos of my rats today. I know several pregnant people, so I figured I'd do a toy-themed shoot.

Dots was pretty cooperative about it:

But Goobers had other ideas:

My family was always the kind that had pets, when we were young my Mum leased land with a few friends and had horses. My uncle owned a Childrens python that we played with when we were young. We always had pet dogs as well. So when we were old enough to choose our own pets, our parents didn't mind what kind of pets we had as long as we looked after them. Since then between me and my brother we have had every kind of pet from rats to scorpions and everything in-between. Right now since were living in a smaller rented town-house we only have a cat and small dog. Ill post some photos when I have time to scan them.

They aren't poisonous or aggressive but they still aren't really a children's python. Lol.

I have two black cats. Miss Nico aka the Neekster aka Niki Naki Nu and Brian aka Cryin' Brian aka Fluffy McFluffington of the Philadelphia McFluffingtons.

I am thinking of adding a fancy goldfish to my menagerie. Someone who looks like this.

So I did an early xmas photo shoot with the boys today. I was going to wait to post the results though (I plan on doing a Thanksgiving one, too. I'm just waiting for a prop that I ordered to arrive), but I can't wait.
Here's the best I could manage of them together:

Miss Vicky's pets are like models!

Well, normally I'm not a big dog lover, but my older sisters Pittbull has been staying with us. She had puppies about two weeks ago and their eyes finally opened. They are so adorable. There are the girls Pretzel and Audrey, and the boys Beast and Indiana (;)). I've been playing with them almost all day.
