Controversial movies

Recommend me your favorite movies that didn't get a good public or critical feedback because of their controversial subject, methods of filmming etc. I'm currently experimenting a lot by watching shocking yet thought provoking movies. Last one I've seen was the Serbian movie and it was just w.o.w. Hbu ? :)

He's a mixed bag, but check out anything directed by Lars Von Trier if you haven't already. He makes movies I dislike just as much as ones that I like, but his films sounds right up your alley, in terms of what you're looking for. I'd start with Antichrist, I'd say that's his most "controversial" movie that I could still recommend.

I had to look up HBU.

I totally agree about A Serbian Film. It was banned here by a christian family lobby group somehow thinking lil johnny would see it in a cinema at midnight. I thought it was very well made for that genre, and certainly deeply thought provoking.

The Devils (1971)

Great film that even today remains extremely difficult to find in its uncensored form. I suppose many Catholics are offended by scenes like a priest administering enemas and nuns having an orgy in church.

Someone like Vinegar Syndrome or Severin Films needs to release the uncut version on blu-ray already.

Lars Von Trier is definetly the one, but still I'm quite divided when it comes to his movies. I've seen few of his movies like Dogvile and Breaking the Waves which were brutally good but still they leave me wondering does Lars Von Triers provokes just for the provocation itself or is there something more. And I'm definitely watching the Antichrist

haha How about you ;)

The same situation happend here. Acutally it suprised me when I found out that the movie was censored a lot in Great Britain which almost calls itself the cradle of democracy.

I think we followed you guys. Ken Park was banned here as well, and Human Centiped 2 (not sure about 1 or 3)

I also recommend Antichrist but I only watched it once. Very hard watch. Not as excruciating as A Serbian Film for me but ASF had an analogy that just wrecked me, but I did manage a rewatch or two. Left me in tears each time. If you havent read them I suggest checking out interviews with the director. Seems like a very smrt guy.

eta Here is one. I read his interviews before seeing the movie so watched it purely from his PoV.

Antichrist is on my watchlist for tonight. I would also mention here Irréversible I couldn't get through the whole rape scene the brutality just blew my mind.

I couldnt get through Irrevsible at all. Made it to the fire hydrant scene. I didnt even know about the rape scene until my brother spoke about the one continuous shoot.

Saunchy, totally understandable reaction to A Serbian Film.

And Rindra, I would also recommend Martyrs. Will keep you thinking for days.

Saunch 06-06-17 07:08 PM

Somehow I made it through Irreversible. I do think it's great but it'll take Incredible circumstances for me to revisit it.

Found out that
WARNING: spoilers below
the guy that turns and walks away in the tunnel was an accident. Some crew member that was there at the wrong time (heh).

Well, good job, crew member. You made go "WHAT THE ****?" during a movie.

Hah ! I didn't that was a screw up but it ended up pretty interesting and realistic considering people turning their head away from violence all the time

Re: Controversial movies

Edgar Wright tweeted about giving Salo a go and cut it off at the halfway point.

Said he could only take 60 days. I don't know why I thought that was funny.

I go through phases when I feel I'm desensitised and want to push myself off the couch by confronting myself. Snuff 102 is the last extreme horror I saw. Had a chat to the director after. Seemed like a really down to earth guy and he said he didnt make it for titillation. That movie came back and bit me on the bum big time. Knocked the wind out of me.

OMG I had to go and shower after that. Left me feeling really unclean for watching it.
