Oliver Stone's anti-Vietnam film is a brutal portrayal of class division in a blender of human atrocity.

Platoon (1986)

The list of faces involved runs the gamut. Mr. Tiger Blood, Jake Taylor, the Green Goblin, the Candyman, the voice of all those U.S. Navy commercials, Johnny "Drama", Edward Scissorhands, Ghost Dog, and Dr. Cox to name a few. Shellshocked was how I felt trying to allow these characters to be in a movie made 30 years ago, as opposed to all the stuff I associate them with in the mental.

Sheer brutality permeates the essence of this film. Violence, death, rape and wrath smother this world and leave little hope that anything less can survive. Stone's depiction of combat and the aftermath goes to a dark place in humanity.

Class portrayal is a broad stroke of those having no choice in being there and those of privilege who were careless enough to be there. No matter what the situation, that division will always be present and it manifests itself in many forms.

Everyone knows about the great roles in this film, but I need to address the one that stuck out to me. John C. McGinley's every scene appeared like he just left Studio 54, if its doors would have been open at the time. Of all the great performances, his was a sore thumb that left me wondering why Stone had portrayed him in that manner.

He isn't to be outdone by Charlie Sheen, but I blame the script for Sheen's character's issues. Insert a middle-class underachiever who chooses to go where so many of lesser means would give all to avoid. Lost, weak, and out-of-touch at the beginning goes to tip of the spear commando in the matter of minutes. Whatever the symbolism of this was, it flew over my head. One doesn't go from scared to brave that quick unless there is a major psychotic break.

Platoon is a raw, gritty, possibly realistic portrayal of war and how it affects the different classes of people it consumes.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

What else can be said about this tapestry of absurdity? A display of talent so deep that David Thewlis has 2 minutes of screen time. Bowling ball montages, granny ashes and sansa belt slacks. Still went to In-N-Out. John Goodman burning a dart, fired up over a rug. Seaside Folger's can. Bowling bowl action p.o.v.

No? Obviously you're not a golfer.

A great haze of a movie to sit in the backseat to.

The Dark Knight (2008)

It is hard to believe that this movie will have 10 candles on its cake this year. Maybe that explains why I'm not "so" impressed by it anymore. If this was 2008, I would toe the company line a little more.

Ledger is captivating, My Cocaine is a gem in all his scenes, and Nolan executes with surgical precision. I think this why I don't enjoy this as much anymore. It feels cold and sterile now and never reaches out to grab my hand. The spark is gone.

Ledger is still a marvel, but the movie feels like I've gone back for my 3rd piece of pie.

The Post (2018)

Steven Spielberg’s name guarantees execution at the highest level. Detailed sets, top shelf talent and a polished camera. Go ahead and give the award to the Post, right?

Streep is on full display here and that goes a long way. Hanks is doing Hanks and Bradley Whitford is playing a Whitford character, but I love the weasel. Everybody else is competent, but Streep keeps the boat afloat with her sheer verve.

To me this is a case of making a cake, but you didn't measure the ingredients right. Everything is spot on by itself, but the sum of them all yields a lukewarm product. Fear not, the final act swoops in and delivers a jolt of manufactured sweetness. I couldn’t really believe the ultimate decision and how it was made, with all its possible repercussions, but it gets the movie where it needs to go. While maybe contrived, a Twinkie still hits the spot.

The Post is filled with stars and production value, but feels like reading the paper from last week.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017)

What a little gem this is. Another example of a movie I heard such good things about and it took me a while to get there. Hoffman and Sandler shine, while Stiller does a great job carrying the bags.

This movie had many proclaim that Sandler can act...again. His performances never lack for being earnest, regardless of how serious they are. The opening scene driving in Manhattan is genuine to a T. I could watch him and Hoffman all day, no matter how uncomfortable it gets.

Despite whatever history there is behind it, a family is defined by the love it shows to one another.

I, Tonya (2017)

What a great movie. No matter how much I butcher the liner notes, this was a good time. My cup runneth over with characters, period clothes and distorted love. I'll do you a solid and drop the rating now, cuz here comes the ramble.

"You F#@% dumb, you don't marry it."

One could argue that the "Incident" was a vanguard to the reality state that we live in now. It was all over the place featuring a tried and true class divide story between the princess and, well.... Tonya Harding came from a working class home, with a tough mother who pushed her daughter to the edge of greatness and possibly into the arms of Jeff Gilloly. Allison Janney earns all the praise for her real?/not real? portrayal of a helicopter mom. A UH-1 Huey gunner wielding a M-60 machine gun.

https://i.imgur.com/DHh2TT0.png
"With a mustache I still can't apologize for."

I can't think of anything he has been in besides that seasonal fighter movie, which was forgettable at best. He makes a splash as the weak-minded, controlling, abusive grease ball that was conducting the crazy train. Soooo good.

https://i.imgur.com/WMGnoDk.png
FBI Agent: What can you tell us about Tonya Harding?
Shawn Eckhardt: I don’t know a Tony Harding.
Other FBI Agent: Aren’t you her bodyguard?

Shawn Eckhardt was Gilloly's toadie and delusional mastermind of the whole process. Imagine Paxton's character from True Lies fueled by deep-fried mozzarella manning a command center in mom's basement. Yeah, I'm developing a script for the spinoff already.

Okay guy, what about the star? Well, Robbie is great. Maybe she does too good of a job being relatively normal compared to the cartoons she is surrounded with. This movie walks a fine line between real and absurd with her serving as the anchor.

How much of this is real and how much sells tabloids? It matters not a bit, because this is one is a gem.

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (1987)

The children's black market will flourish, as long as the sugar-fueled little maniacs are told they can't have something. Enter the Garbage Pail Kids. Me being me, I never realized they were a parody of the Cabbage Patch Kid. I just knew they were awesome, like a Mad magazine on a card. And they were forboden, so I always wanted them.

https://i.imgur.com/OWuwDkI.png

It's not to hard to believe that a studio took a million dollars, threw it at the wall and got this. I mean, it was the 80's, so all the little monsters got plenty of sexualized PG goodness. There is no need to talk about this movie, or the antiques dealer who gives our protagonist baths while not being his guardian :suspicious::suspicious::suspicious: and has imprisoned a tribe of nightmare faced uglies in a garbage pail with magic but they still love him and don't try to murder him even though one of them is an Ali Gator. I'm not going to be the guy bringing up the issues in a movie that looks like it was shot on 3 sets.

https://i.imgur.com/D6w5Ayj.png

This is The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. They made it for $1mil to tell the story of a young boy in love with an aspiring fashion designer and how he used forced labor to try and win her black heart.

You Can Be A Garbage Pail Kid

Whenever them normies started comin around
Laughing and pointing and putting us down
If they think we're ugly, they should look in a mirror
It's not how you look, it's what you got in here
We're all special, yeah, special in unique design
Everyone's a reflection, reflection of these crazy times

If your teacher says you're bad and sends you to the principal
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid
If your parents say you dress like you should be in a carnival
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid
It's international, radical, how anything unusual
Ends up like a Garbage Pail Kid

You think you're all so brave and all so cute
But you don't understand, you try to persecute
Well, here's a pail and here's a lid
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid!
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid!

I'll take Juice
And squeeze him right and make him pay
For what he does to Dodger,
He's gonna have a judgment day!

If your teacher says you're bad and sends you to the principal
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid
If your parents say you dress like you should be in a carnival
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid
It's international, radical, how anything unusual
Ends up like a Garbage Pail Kid

You think you're all so brave and oh so cute
But you don't understand, you try to persecute
Well, here's a pail and here's a lid
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid!
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid!
You can be a Garbage Pail Kid!

Nocturnal Animals (2016)

There is no denying the beauty of Nocturnal Animals, the sophomore offering from Tom Ford. What's debatable, is the effectiveness of the narrative. While telling two stories in parallel with each other, one is sad and the other is just a sad existence. I can see what was being done here, but I'm not advanced enough to enjoy watching it.

All parties involved do a solid job, but two people standout. Michael Shannon, playing to type in looking like a creep, but without the usual menace. I'm probably too biased to say anything with merit, but he is a great Texas slim.

Let me introduce Aaron Taylor-Johnson. This fresh face is bound...wait, what's that. He's been around for how long? Oh, that's right. He always played a stiff, non-emoting character. If this is him breaking out of a shell, then get ready. What a menacing, scary real person he showed up as here. I didn't recognize him until I paused the movie and looked up the cast.

Much like one of Tom Ford's magnificent suits, it would show better if there was something inside of it.

Paterson (2016)

A friend recommended this a while ago and I finally saw it today. This is one of the more unique films I've seen in a while. What does it mean, where does it go, what happens? I'm not really sure.

There is a lot under the surface here that left me bemused. Paterson is a man that is in contrast with almost everything in his life. His old-fashioned tendencies in a modern world, his methodical tendency opposite his day-dreaming partner, his peaceful life versus a co-worker's many perceived problems. And the dog that leads him to drink :D . Pairs keep showing up in life, but he seems to not have one himself. I won't list all the symbolism, because it is all lost on me.

I could easily have copypasta'd a meaning from somewhere, but you would smell a rat. I just ended up being confused by all the symbolism and what it meant. Then I saw this was a romantic comedy.

Despite what you see, there is no black and white.

Frost/Nixon (2008)

On all technical merit, Frost/Nixon is superb. It looks great and does a good job making you feel at home in the 70's. Langella steals the shows with a performance for the ages as embattled Richard Milhous Nixon. In my mind I have probably considered Langella's Nixon as the real thing for many years. And Sam Rockwell is a Tarheel!

https://i.imgur.com/yJMqXGF.png

This must be the part where good ol' denny roles out the 5 buckets, end of story. Not so fast, friend. While the movie is executed without nearly a flaw, there is one issue that struck me in the jaw.

This really plays out like the best Rocky movie, number IV. Frost is built up as hotshot on his way to conquer after having previous success. Bright lights, big city, jet planes, beautiful women, et cetera. Nixon is the villain, a polished wall of stone. Controlling, dominant, calculated, brutal. Then one fateful night, it all crumbles and the hero wins.

I am curious to see the difference between the real story and Hollywood. It is great for entertainment, but I fell off the boat when that happened and sank back to earth. I can't say anything bad about the movie, I just soured on the moment when I realized I was being manipulated.

Yes Mr. Nixon, you are my boogeyman, you're here to do whatever you can.

The Polka King (2017)

I stumbled across this today and I was on the fence. Sure Jack Black is nice in measured doses, but do I really want to...wait, Schwartzman is in this. Play.

This movie works for about 20 minutes...it doesn't stop for another hour and 15 minutes. In fact, they basically replay a loop of events a couple of times for no purpose other than filler. Jack Black is being full-blown schmarmy and it's loses steam fast. Of course Jason Schwartzman is great in every scene. :suspicious:

Now I am basically just posting these images, which try to replicate the 80's-90's fidelity aesthetic.

Diehard with a Vengeance (1995)

For the past _____ years of my life, I would have bet your paycheck that Diehard Trey was the best of them all. Hitting play on the nostalgia tape (literally) unleashes a frenetic, non-stop action smashup / caper / revenge film. It's m***** f****** McTiernan, man!

https://i.imgur.com/MgqDYVX.png

Well, that's how I remembered it. All due respect, McTiernan makes this look like $90 mil in 1995 dollars. Explosions, how many car chases? and camerawork that puts you there. But, I suspect there is a hole in the bow and some of the magic has leaked out.

Jeremy Irons and his accents are still as villainous as ever. It just doesn't have the same ring as it use to. Maybe I've seen this too many times. Maybe watching a 20 year old vhs and the inherent image issues played a part. Maybe people are right. Maybe Diehard is the best one.

McTiernan makes a spectacle for the senses, but I prefer the nostalgia cut.

How spooky is it watching this in 2018, when there is a Trump reference and a Hilary as president line in the movie.

4 people. Mother, brother, sister and lover. All sewn into a world of eccentricities and elegance, designed with the flourish of an auteur .

I give up. The wrestling match I have had with this since Sun, has left my forehead bleeeeeeding after being thrown from the top of a steel cage into the announcer's table. It really is a sharp movie. You must buy the soundtrack. Daniel Day-Lewis shows such artistry in making the most mundane action fascinating.

Cyril is not to be outdone. She does her fair share of scene-stealing and is possibly my favorite part of the film. I am at loss to say anymore. I want to see it again before I even look up any analysis. The way all the major events centered around a meal or food is lost on me, but I know there is something there. I also feel a bit of a mystery towards Woodcock's mother and whether or not she did what I think she did :D.

3 Billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

What do Phantom Thread and I, Tonya have to do with 3 Billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri? If not for those movies, I would feel like a broken record of "great actors, looks great, why isn't this great?"

https://i.imgur.com/YHh83HR.png

3B's has been praised from the drop. The story of a mother seeking justice for her slain daughter, trying to pick up the pieces in Missouri, which has apparently being blanketed with southern charm. Unfortunately, it just doesn't shake out to much. Especially in comparison to all the other award frontrunners, this one is laughable. I just can't make sense of these characters or much else. If I was an intellectual, I would say there are some politics behind all the good press this received.

https://i.imgur.com/ctLJjhj.png

The Coen Bros. work in absurdity and bizarre with a master's touch. They make nonsense believable and approachable. Martin McDonagh seems like some manic hack that is standing in front of a bulletin board with push pins, creating a web of ideas with red yarn. It creates such absurdity and then goes back to normal. Not normal in a surreal world, but random acts that suffer no repercussion in a film that supposedly needs real detective work to exist.

https://i.imgur.com/EB8x2Ad.png
It wasn't all bad. Sam Rockwell is that dude, imb.

3B's just seemed like a hodgepodge of this character, then that character, try this one and cue ambiguous ending. Definitely file under "hot mess with a tilted wig".

A Serious Man (2009)

What the hell did I just watch?! Never before, have I enjoyed a movie so much, that I had no clue what happened. Is that the point? If so, then why? Sure there is a middle-aged father with a s*** marriage, a pothead son and a daughter...well, I'm pretty sure she isn't washing that hair.

https://i.imgur.com/gOaP8Q3.png

It is fitting that I watched this after 3 Billboards, which came across as a less than thin Coen Bros.' clone. In A Simple Serious Man, you have a movie with so much strange and unknown intertwined and working in a brilliant way. This movie plays like warm butter, smoothly from one scene to the next. Seamless and delicious.

Where the hell was I in 2009? I remember Hurt Locker and IG, but this? No recollection at all. I'm kinda glad, because this lovely will be something to revisit. Stahlbarg was my favorite part of Fargo S3, wonderful in SoW, and lo and behold he makes this one.

Justice League (2017)

The Justice League is without a doubt the most iconic collection of heroes ever. There is no arguing that Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman form a trinity that is unbeatable by any other trio de heroes. How hard can it be to be to make a functional superhero movie in this day and age?

I don't pray allegiance to one comic hero or house. My experiences have often been with the broad swath movies and cartoons made for mass consumption. Please don't misconstrue anything I say coming from a place of any knowledge.

Possible film pitch at Warners. "We need to get Supes, Bats and WeeWee(?) together on the big screen. Those guys at the mouse are killing us and we have the best characters! Let's have Bruce Wayne go around and have conversations with strangers and try to convince them to die with him. Why?

Hmmm....something is coming that will threaten everything. Yeah! Now we're cooking. And we need something to chase, so let's have these three boxes that come together and we will eventually have to separate. I'm worried that we can't write enough material for 3 characters, so let' add two more. Boo-yah! How many generic actions scenes do we need? Let's figure it out later. "

I could go on and on, but I wouldn't want to read it either. This movies have to be extremely hard to make. Maybe they give these directors too much money and the creativity that flourishes from tight budgets is lost. I 'm of the belief that a movie with the 3 most iconic heroes won't work to begin with. The Avengers are no slouches, but Ironman and his cronies aren't the Trinity either.

This movie isn't horrible, it just isn't any good either.

The latest offering from DC Animated takes the familiar Batman roster and drops them in Victorian age Gotham. What takes place is a refreshing change of pace that is mired by the usual hangups.

https://i.imgur.com/TUYvWH7.png

I really enjoyed GbG. It gives me hope that one day we will get a one-off comic movie with familiar characters in an alternate setting. No buildups, no explanations as to why, just do. Being familiar with these characters makes it easier to go along with the story at hand. I give DC all the credit in the world for this.

https://i.imgur.com/z1wChNU.png

That's not to say this isn't without its flaws. Bruce Greenwood, captain of the Bruce Wayne JV squad voice talent is one. He just sounds to old for this version of the Crusader. The animation isn't that great, but most of these never are. It always appears that frames are missing and comes across cheap at times.

https://i.imgur.com/DDNWrdd.png

Gotham by Gaslight is well worth the watch. Take all the familiar characters, mixed up in a different time and enjoy. I could have done without the R-rating. It seemed unnecessary and doesn't add much the way they used it. I'm sure marketing has something to with it.

Hi! My name's Bastien. I enjoy cuddles and have an affinity for red sauce.

Rachel McAdams and the ever youthful Jason Bateman are a couple that fell in love over a shared enthusiasm for gaming. No, not 60 fps games, but those of boards and verbs. They are attempting to have a child and live next to "the guy who shot that kid in Breaking Bad". He's a super-creeper with a sweet puff of a Westie, Bastien. Plus, his wife left him and it's apparent he will never get over it. The McBateman couple had made the mistake of including him and his wife in the past and now try to avoid the now single neighbor. That's enough exposition.

Jesse Plemons and Bastien, enjoy

What follows is a standard mix of hijinks and quips played by an excellent cast. All the characters offer something, but no one ever bogs down the proceedings. There is a great Denzel Washington story, a Jeffery Wright appearance and the enjoyable one-shot of a game of Hot Potato. It all works and is accompanied by a BRILLIANT score.

I guess a skeptic would see this coming from a mile away. "Look at this guy's favorite movies, totally biased. I mean, he thinks David Bowie was born on another planet. All the reviews say this is hot garb, so don't even bother." I want to know, who did Duncan Jones piss off in Hollywood?

https://i.imgur.com/FG1yddZ.jpg?1

If this is Jones return to form, it's not Moon. So I guess if it's not a masterpiece made with the change in the couch, it has to be a steaming pile? Something smells funny about the way this film is being received, because it is really good.

Take one part strong silent type, add missing mysterious girlfriend, and shake with two random scumbags. Ummm... sounds pretty good so far. Throw in some great looking sets and great music, now you're cooking with gas. What plays out is a Man on Fire type, looking for answers.

Critics said, "...this is a muddled mess of a plot. ...club scene looks like a 5th Element yard sale. ... Netflix's plan on giving out creative control to these directors is blowing up in their face..."

Oh I get it now. This is about Netflix

Mute is not Moon. Not much is. Mute is a good bit of scifi. If you are a guy from NC who is a casual movie fan that has had trouble making it through movies at home recently (breath) but stayed glued to your tv the whole time and enjoyed soaking up futuristic Berlin. After the push behind movies like 3B's and all the vitriol spewed at Mute, either I'm going crazy or there are definitely a lot of agendas being published nowadays.

Much is being made about the graphic nature of this film. If you have been sheltered your entire life, never seen a R-rated film, or maybe a faux internet crusader.

A young woman suffers a work related injury that throws her into a convoluted web of deception  . She undergoes a series of events that play out as filler to showcase some sexual acts and body damage. Add Joel Edge and his dreamy, squinty gaze because we need a face. Jeremy Irons (real life, castle dwelling smoker) purses his lips and smokes in grand fashion.

I won't remember much about this movie except for a scene where JLaw's character steals a fellow comrades mojo. In light of her abuses, it was a different and empowering take on full nudity.

I can appreciate watching a bad movie (Game Over, Man!) because I will go into with no expectations. I'm not disappointed, because I didn't expect much to begin with.

I have to say I was disappointed with Lady Bird. It is a fine movie, but nothing really special. This seems like every teenager ever. Every moment is the biggest deal, don't get along with a parent(s), change friends because you think you want something different. I thought there was a special movie waiting here, but it wasn't.

First thing I have to get off my chest, some of the acting is really bad. Astonishling poor. But I love this movie. It is so absurd and unbelievable. Say what you want, but this movie doesn't work without the dream team couple of Winona and Christian Slater. I love my 80's films and this is a great antithesis to the John Hughes styling that most followed.

I was excited to see RPO. A smorgasbord of pop-culture references from my childhood by a director who basically directed my childhood. What a wonderful idea, if you execute it.

The only issue I really had with myriad references, was that they went by so fast you didn't really get to relish much. Short of that one "movie scene" they entered, it kinda fell flat. The whole movie rang hollow and didn't even look like a Spielberg. You know what Spielberg movies look like and this one just seemed so ordinary. Like when McTiernan let that guy film that scene in Predator....

A Quiet Place (2018)

I must have read all those reviews wrong, because this one didn't fly with me. I can understand the lack of sound and the desired effect, but it didn't work on me. Part of this is due to the lack of any real release from the tension. There are no jump scares or anything else to break the monotony. Horror (which I wouldn't classify this as) isn't my go to genre, but this was so boring and a waste of time. Thankfully, it runs quick. I was gonna strangle myself the next time I saw someone put their index finger on their lips.

Charming, delightful, intricate. What an enjoyable experience. I have grown somewhat tired of Anderson's "dollhouse" aesthetic for live films, but it is perfect for this form.

It seemed like a good idea, a bunch of crims in a sanctuary and stuff happens...violent stuff.

Well there are bad guys and stuff happens, but there was very little action. It could have worked if the story and dialogue were better. It ended up being a bunch of prattle and not much else. And when did Jodie Foster become a horrible actress?

Never let me fool you into thinking I know anything about movies or how to construct a proper sentence. The same ethos could be applied to this movie, that is easily the weakest entry to the summer of Brolin.

I can't say I have ever disliked anything Danny McBride has been involved in, but this is really stupid. Not Step Brothers stupid, bad and not funny stupid. Try stretching out a gimmick (80's style outdoor/ sportsman videos) fit for a youtube clip, add Josh Brolin and a kid who is possibly the worst child actor I have ever seen.

I'm just gonna stop there. No redeeming qualities. Plus I lost a little respect for Carrie Coon even being involved in this :p .

doubledenim 07-22-18 04:11 AM

The original Deadpool was a nice entry into the comicbook movie world. Violent, irreverent, and absurd. Wade Wilson's 4th wall demolishing fits perfectly with this type of film. Ryan Reynolds put his everything into getting the movie made and it showed.

The sequel. Eh... I floated between giving this a 2.5 and a 3. I ended up with a 3, because a 2.5 is the ceiling of bad movie ratings. It just felt like too much was going on, with none of it paying off. For brevity, I will sum it up with the unadvertised villain
WARNING: spoilers below
Juggernaut.
If you are going to use him, use him. Make him the focus of the movie. Not only is he wasted onscreen, but he is used in a way that doesn't even vibe with with his history.

Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)

This movie was never gonna be the best thing ever, but for 2/3 of the film it was headed that way. Like a lot films that could use a few more cuts, the clock gazing starts towards the end.

I'm not a big post 80's Cruise fan, nor have I ever got out of bed for a MI movie. Something felt different from the trailers on this one. Fallout manages to clip along at a brisk pace from action piece to action piece, until the exposition vomits all over the final act.

The bathroom scene and motorcycle scene(Arc de Triomphe) were superb. I've haven't seen a movie that made me feel like I was gonna be in a wreck that many times before. Everything was chop, chop until we get to the end.

They seem to dump all of the story (which really wasn't needed) on the end and it drags down the film. The helo chase could have been a few minutes shorter and it seems like the scene from the trailer (helicopter on the road headed towards truck) was cut.

If it wasn't for the loss of momentum at the end, this would have been a near perfect action ride. Nevertheless, a great summer vacation available at the local cine.

doubledenim 08-04-18 06:35 AM

This spring, every movie I saw at the not-for-profit cinema showed this trailer. It seemed charming and humorous. Buyer beware.

I had the windows open last night, so I watched this with headphones. Maybe the sound being in my brain, increased the annoyance factor. The young boy and his screaming fits, the baby crying, was all done to such a point of excess that it was really grinding my gears. I figured there was an obvious point being made with the sound, but it's lost on me why.

Overall, I kinda checked out after that. I think that the direction it ended up going was unimpressive.

Being an ardent fan and critic of standup, I think I was looking forward to finding things to dislike about this because I don't care for Burnham's act. Swing and a miss. Burnham shows an ability to capture what many of us went through and his eye for this is the true talent.

I will say, I don't think it is revolutionary or too insightful. How many of us grew up with a sibling going through puberty? I recognize most of these scenes, through the eyes of a child seeing his older sister grow up. I really give him credit for knowing what works and what doesn't and doing the research to make the most current movie he could at the time.

That last dinner scene was one of the greatest things I have seen in cinema. Burnham as a director has a new fan in denim.

I remember hearing about this and what a good movie it was. If that was because of its empowerment message, it's great. If it was because it's entertaining, musta been that fake news dey all talk about.

There were some nice shots, but I didn't really care for it. I didn't know that rape/revenge is a genre, but it seems to be. I can embrace a woman falling off a cliff, being impaled and exacting bloody retribution. It just broke this movie the way it was constructed.

The Death of Superman (2018)

Maybe if enough people keep repeating it, it will come to fruition. Please Mr./Mrs. Warner Bros., just make the live action like your animated. The Death of Superman is the best one I have seen in a while and it is dark in some spots. Yeah, it's PG-13, but there is some serious blood and head trauma going on.

There are great little side nuggets to the action, Bruce Wayne as a dad, Lois Lane and Superman's relationship, etc. The only drawback is some of the voice work. Jerry O'Connell is not right for Superman and Rain Wilson sounds like a bad James Wood impersonator. Also, Martian Manhunter is portrayed like a fool as usual. Arguably the second most powerful member, he is an also ran like rest of the League waiting for the Superman cavalry as usual. That beat gets old.

Intense is a good word for this movie. Chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, choppity, chop. Non-stop. Did you know it was made for $2 mil in Mother Russia? That helps explain a lot. All those stunts that look crazy dangerous and were done without a net or safety device, Russia.

I always enjoy Sharlto Copley and he puts on every wig (literally) in this one. His manic energy makes it easy to remember why they cast him as Murdock a while back.

The only downside is FPS 365 didn't work for me. I'm of the thought that you need a controller and a micro second of lead time to know where you are going to look. Without that buffer, it made me feel like I was being jerked around by my nose the whole time.

I should have known better than to think this was gonna be a Soderbergh style movie. My bad. I bought the trailer and it looked like a bunch of slick lines, from slick individuals, with a wink in their eye. Not to say it is devoid of humor, but it's not very light.

Through no fault of his own, the son of Denzel sounds a lot like his father. My problem is it causes me to think his dad should be there and he's not. It's a weird experience.

It didn't real make much of an impression on me other than Paul Walter Hauser is probably past the point of typecast.

My old man came down to North Carolina in the 70's. He knew that Jesse Helms was his senator and there were KKK billboards on the highways in the eastern part of the state. "Where the hell am I ?" was his thought on his new home.

Well, in the movie Ron Stallworth is assigned to protect David Duke when he comes to town. The one black cop in the department, assigned to escort the "darn tootin'est" leader of the Klan.

Upon talking to Dad Jeans today and sharing that bit, he had his own story to tell. My father use to work for the government in matters of labor law. There was a co-worker of his who was a young black lawyer. One day they were presented a case involving a secretary and a wrongful termination from her employer. In all fairness to this movie, I watched it at the end of a long day after a big meal. It was a good watch, but like the food, I probably ingested a little too much hype.

The story and twist are cool and I think they did a good job with what little background they put in for a quick movie. The calling card action scenes were not that impressive, short of trying to figure out how they rigged the camera. Good, but nothing to lose sleep over.

There is a lot wrong with this movie. That's okay, because there is a lot of right that outweighs it. This feels like a real family going through struggles. McCounaghey is the heart of this and does a great job. It's enjoyable to see him weak and vulnerable as opposed to a lot of the hard edge, strong man types he frequents. 80's nostalgia sealed this for me.

Eighth Grade was probably the best movie I've seen this year. I probably won't watch it again, but it was solid and scratched that "I wanna see Something" itch. Then along comes the Elijah Wood :p backed Mandy and she digs her fingernails into my back.

Apparently this involves some of Carl Jung's more interesting ideas among other things. There are already a lot more insightful people dissecting this movie, but no one has addressed the mirror image scene between Mandy and Jeremiah. This movie just doesn't do anything right. Nonsensical dialogue, forgettable action, horrible looking monsters (why are their heads so big?), winnebago teleportation, leads me to smfh. This is the first time I remember seeing Mahershala Ali in anything and I can't wait for True Detective. He is a magnetic force that demands all attention when he is on screen. It's a good thing, because the rest of this movie is such a phone-in that it is kind of embarrassing.

Everyone outside of Ali should return the money they took to perform in this. Sebastian Maniscalco, is a great standup who is just as horrible at acting. Viggo Mortensen and his gut and Bronx accent, ugh. It is all so bad and cliched.

This movie tries to venture into some touchy subjects, but always manages to keep you out of the mud. This bad thing happens, we talk our way out of it. This unfortunate turn of events, use a "get out of jail free" card. There is no tension or belief that anything of consequence is gonna happen.

Mahershala Ali is something to behold, but that is all there is to it. This movie never gets serious enough to lend any weight to the proceedings and is the definition of trite. A missed opportunity to say the least. This could have been so much more.

This movie was a pleasure to behold. The performances, costumes, set pieces and the camera work were great. I can only imagine how the camera moves to capture some of these shots. Nicholas Hoult may be overshadowed by the other performances, but his scenes offered a needed break.

I can see this being an acquired taste that I don't have. It somehow manages to be less than the sum of its parts. The score is grating and maybe that's the point. Seems like the plunking a key on a piano repeatedly to build tension has been done so many times and it became tiresome. Please just turn it off, so I can focus on the movie.

Spider-Man into the Multiverse (2018)

The first half-hourish of this was some of the best stuff I saw this year. So much content rolled up and clipping and sidestepping many of the the cliche comic origin pitfalls. There is a lot that can be learned from for the live-action films and I'm of the belief cgi can make it happen.

After that, it just lost steam for me. It felt like enough content for an hour type movie. I loved the art, the sound, voicework, but I got numb after a while. The plot seemed like a "let's do this so we can focus on Miles and the Spideys and not really iron out anymore details". I need a good villain, doing villonius :yup: things, with some dire situation. This story just didn't deliver. I would have rather seen more Miles in school and young romance than this attempt at conflict.

The "fateful" tagging scene was a bright spot along with that guy from Mandy. That'll snap your head around.

doubledenim 12-29-18 06:55 PM

If McKay's earlier success from the Big Short was absent, one could be left to wonder what the hell this guy is trying to do. Unconventional works when it blends seamlessly and pushes the story forward. The Jesse Plemmons angle is the biggest misfire, but there are other issues at play here. Add to that Bale seems to be on autopilot here. "sigh, heavy breathing, head nod, click the side of the mouth back, repeat". It seems like there is a better movie here, I just don't know how you get there.

Quirky, offbeat, how would you describe this? Delicious.

Game Night

There are so many "pop" movies that aim to create easily digested entertainment. It's obviously not as easy at it would seem, because this was the best "lite fare" I saw all year. Well-executed gag humor and Plemmmmmmmoooooonnnnssss.

Isle of Dogs

Thanks for bringing me back Wes Anderson.

Wind River

The more I think about it, if not for one film, this may be the best thing I saw. Natural, engaging, sad and tragic.

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Cruise in light of all the crazy, still has that primo star power. Best action movie of recent memory.

Eighth Grade

This was such a touching, emotive film. The line I love stealing that somebody else wrote, "Not all human interest stories have to be an old man trying to survive in the woods."
I may be at an age where I'm really nostalgic for my youth. That said, this film brought the middle school, on the precipice of change, BIG TIME of your life experience back to life.

High Flying Bird (2019)

Are we suppose to believe that Soderbergh is doing these iPhone movies because he wants to or because Logan Lucky was box office influenza? While impressive in execution, let's not think these films are shot with the iPhone set up you have in your hand. It might work for 10 minute YouTube videos, but the fixed-shot, lack of movement/zoom creates a sense that you are watching a stage play after a while.

Aesthetic aside (and how many shots of paneled rooms and ornate backgrounds can you handle?) this offers a glimpse into the world of sports, agents, and a continuation of exploitation that exists in the world. One man and his unconventional methods show that you never really know where people stand until all the cards are on the table.

Oh yeah. Bill Duke. Come on man. Are you dead or what?

I didn't think it was possible for the DCAU to make a dud, but they succeeded with ROTS. Muddled would be a good way to describe this one. Who's the bad guy, what's going on, where are ______ at? It always seemed like these movies were impossible to mess up, but this one is about as good as Batman Ninja

I think that when I finally get around to watching stuff like this, I'm mildly depressed. Gloomy outside, can't do much, let's feast on Netflix.

These are movies that I should be excited for, but I just didn't feel the need to watch. Mainly, I wanted to glimmer some small bit that would flesh out the larger universe they inhabit. That's not really a strong reason to watch.

No strong feelings, not bad, not great, would not be a travesty to miss.

doubledenim 03-17-19 06:58 PM

I can't remember the time period this came out, but it sure seems like it was Guy Ritchie-lite. Maybe not fair, but that's what I see.

Now the G.R. stuff may be hyper-stylized with cocaine-editing, hyperbolic dialogue and absurdity. It may be too much at times, but it wasn't boring. L4yer Cake kinda is. Sans Sienna Miller in negligee, this had no sizzle. Noteworthy to me for having a young Tom Hardy. Well-executed British gangster movie, but lackluster in script.

The Dirt (2019)

Anytime I watch something based on the 80's, it starts with some built-in goodwill. I think that carries the movie for me. Nostalgia. There is a lot wrong going on here and I don't know if it's the material or Jackass alumni Jeff Tremaine's treatment. It seems to gloss over every reprehensible action with some sort of wink or smile.

There are some good moments, but this is on par with a made-for-t.v. movie. Not a bad thing, but a reminder of the varying levels of quality in all this Netflix content.

Captain Marvel (2019)

This really didn't do much for me. Possibly the most boring Marvel flick I've endured. The last 20 minutes were ok, but the whole story was just really uninteresting. Nostalgia bits didn't even land and I probably owned most of that music at one time.

This was the first movie the director made after producing Lock Stock and Snatch (and even swept away) so I think it is quite fair. I personally think it has aged better than both of those movies though.. his next movie was Stardust and then Kick Ass

Hellboy (2019)

I have been guilty of being pretentious about art in my life. Maybe over-exaggerating something in order to prove some sort of merit on my part. A band no one else has heard yet, a movie that many didn't see. I've been trying to get rid of some of the bull****.

The GDT movies literally looked like the inner workings of a fine watch. Gears and moving parts and an abundance of stuff you can't comprehend the significance of. Michael Bay Transformers. Marshall's Hellboy is nothing like that. It's cheesy, bad cgi and pretty B movie'ish...and it's great for that.

The overwhelming reviews and negativity toward the 2019 film seem to stem from a Pearlman/Del Toro loyalty and nerd rage raining down from an ivory tower. This movie is nowhere near the original two, but that's just fine. I like this character and fine cheese and this is one of the best times I've had at the movies this year.

Re: The Denim Record

I think you can make the case that it's bad even when judged as its own entity, but comparing it against the source material and GDT adaptations rrrrreally doesn't do it any favours. Might be too early to call this, but I'm already thinking of it as this year's The Predator.

The Front Runner (2018)

I remember hearing the hype around this last fall and thinking how great it must be. Then it came and went and I don't remember anyone talking about it.

First off. How can we still have wigs that look like this in 2018? Seriously, it is all I see and it looks ridiculous.

The movie has all the cluttered shots, groups of people, chattering rooms that are common in journalism/news movies. It so looks the part in the beginning, that it had me feeling like I was on to something. Then it left me outside the front door and never made me want to care for it again.

There was a lot made about Jackman's performance and Hart being a man of the people irl, but Reitman did a great job of making me root against Hart. File under looks great, completely misses the mark in "ye' ol' axe throwing contest" .

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

It worked for me. The callbacks, loose-ends tied and a satisfying conclusion. Throw in a couple of memorable scenes (Rocket and Hulk, amirite?) and I couldn't ask for more. I was completely happy with paying $19 and sitting still/staying awake  for 3 hours. That's not likely to happen again anytime soon.

John Wick 3: Parabellum (2019)

I intentionally went into this movie without watching a single trailer for it. I'm sure the trailer was great, I would even venture it is better than the actual movie.

I'm not big on dissecting film, but this one seemed really short on story. Story that made any sense. Run from bad guys, introduce someone just to go talk to somebody, talk to that person, go to talk to another person, etc... all while not really fleshing out the "universe". These characters, rules and institutions just felt like hollow bits between fight scenes. I get that this isn't a "story" movie, but you have to have some glue to hold these fight scenes together.

Speaking of fight scenes. It really seemed like most of them could be edited down by a few minutes. It often felt like they delivered the hook and just repeated it...and repeated it... The only one that didn't feel overdrawn was the bike scene. Man o' man, that bike scene. Easily the best part of the movie.

In fairness, I think the original is great and the sequels offer diminishing returns. The JW character seems to be getting so convoluted in backstory that it is losing steam. Less is more.

I am lost on why these movies don't work...for me. In an era of big budget spectacle cinema, GKOM feels really small.

The monsters all have their little intro vignettes, but don't seem to have a place to inhabit. Here they are, action pose poster shot, let's throw them all together. Add in a nonsense story, bad acting and a complete wasting of Charles Dance.

They deserve a lot of credit for the trailer, because it did it's job and piqued my interest. I think a less-convoluted story would go a long way. Just have monsters punching each other and leave out all the other stuff. Just like a Transformers movie, get rid of the humans. And I'm now of the belief that Millie Bobby Brown can't act

This may rival Clerks for how to make a movie with no money. Like Kevin Smith's magnum opus, it succeeds in delivering a product that feels genuine.

Jim Cummings performance may step into exaggeration, but there is no question you can feel this man's pain in trying to keep his life from falling apart.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

A Tarantino movie is always an event in the making. The hype, the news, the publicity. What is he going to do this time. Well, this time felt like his love letter to an older Hollywood.

It is a QT movie in the moments and nuance, but unlike any of his others in that it is a quieter movie. I don't think it will stand out as one of his best, but it is a welcome sight in the current landscape of film.

Brad Pitt will never stop being cool.

Hobbs and Shaw (2019)

How can a polished, big budget, action movie be such a bore? Beats me. It's just kind of a flat movie. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a movie with this much money behind it to have a "decent" script. The dialogue is reduced to a bunch of "Sumbich" and "can of whoop@ss" lame one-liners. Idris Elba seems to do the best with the least, but it's not much. Splitting the 3rd act into 2 parts doesn't help.

You've seen it all before and it's perfectly average.

doubledenim 08-04-19 08:39 AM

What a beautiful movie. Everything involved. The imagery, the sadness, the triumph and perseverance. One wonders how much is true and what may have been liberties taken.

doubledenim 10-03-19 09:34 PM

A perfect 10. Masterpiece. Winner of the top prize at film festivals. ... Maybe pump the brakes. Decent, great in moments, but not the greatest thing I've ever seen.

It's hard for me to settle on a thought about this. There are moments where Joaquin Phoenix delivers the goods. Menace. Evil. Everything else just kind of seemed set up around him in a holding orbit. Waiting to land, but never receiving Clarence.

There are a couple of chilling scenes that really impress, but you could make do watching it cut-up in YouTube clips.

Looking for work are you? Well, I've got a job for you. How would you like to work at a remote lighthouse with an old drunk who speaks in riddles? Enjoy a good tug do you? There will be plenty of time for that. Send applications to "what the hell did I just see"?

I really enjoyed The Lighthouse for being a piece of art. The cinematography and acting may be the best thing I've seen all year. Other than that, I'm lost on what it meant. If heavy symbolism is something you like, this is right up your alley. I'm gonna have to search out the answers, but I'm really glad I saw this.

If the day ever comes that Taika Waititi wants to make a "Wes Anderson 2.0" movie, he can do it. The first of act of Jojo Rabbit feels like a better Wes Anderson, one that has the starch taken out of it. It comes across effortless and natural, the most I've laughed out loud in a while.

Then it veers into the serious and heartbreaking life of two young people in Nazi Germany. One sympathizer, one jewish. I realized there would be some heavy moments, but this movie seemed to pull a rope-a-dope. There may have been moments of humor, but long gone was the absurdity of the first act.

Was it so out of balance? That's a shame. I doubt it will play here at all so it may be a while before I can see it. Thanks for the heads-up.

I felt like it was. It had me wondering, "How is he gonna make all this work with it being so cartoonish?" Well, he just drops that bag at the door and starts making sausage.

I really can't express how much fun the first part is. Jojo is adorable. Sam Rocks Well. Reek is here. It played like "Wes Anderson Lite".

Then it's like a switch for "time to be serious" is thrown. There are still little bits with Adolf and his Jojo's bespectacled buddy, but nowhere near the early moments.

Ford vs. Ferrari (2019)

This movie is simple and lacking of any real sense of conflict. That said, I'm always in for a movie with Christian Bale and Shane. Matt Damon is solid as always, but doesn't quite have the physical presence Shelby did.

Great to look at, great car porn, glad I saw it, but I don't know what will stick with me in a year.
