Director's duel: Andrei Tarkovsky vs Ingmar Bergman
How about this? Two of the greatest art film makers face off.
I selected the 8 full length movies Tarkovsky did (The Steamroller and the Violin is 46 minutes long) and the 8 highest rated and most popular Bergman movies. The Steamroller and the Violin (1960) vs Wild Strawberries (1957) Ivan's Childhood (1962) vs The Seventh Seal (1957) Andrei Rublev (1966) vs The Virgin Spring (1960) Solaris (1972) vs Through a Glass Darkly (1961) The Mirror (1975) vs Winter Light (1963) Stalker (1979) vs Persona (1966) Nostalghia (1983) vs Cries and Whispers (1972) The Sacrifice (1986) vs Fanny and Alexander (1982) Voting ends in July 5. The top 8 movies will then be placed against each other for the second round. |

Seriously? All right.

Re: Director's face off: Andrei Tarkovsky vs Ingmar Bergman
This is interesting. I guess I need to watch some Tarkovsky now.

The Steamroller and the Violin is the only one I haven't seen, but I'm not gonna vote anyway. I love them both too much to bother who's better.

Tarkovsky!

Re: Director's face off: Andrei Tarkovsky vs Ingmar Bergman
I can only vote for one selection since I have only seen four movies a piece for each director.
Ivan's Childhood (1962) vs The Seventh Seal (1957) |
Re: Director's face off: Andrei Tarkovsky vs Ingmar Bergman
Gabrielle, which Tarkovsky movies beat which Bergman movies in the shown head-to-head match-ups?

Re: Director's face off: Andrei Tarkovsky vs Ingmar Bergman
Stalker (1979) vs Persona (1966)
What better way to divide a room of cinephiles than with a matchup like this? Stalker is the only Tarkovsky I've seen, and while he's clearly a very technically accomplished filmmaker I find him a bit too deliberately opaque for my tastes, not unlike Terrence Malick. Bergman, on the other hand, is a director who's more concerned with studying people, which is more in line with my own personal sensibilities. I'm not scrambling to watch more of Tarkovsky's films but I will watch this thread with interest. Also, if this is top Bergman Scenes From a Marriage should totally be included. :p |

Bergman is more about dialogue while Tarkosvky is more about the pure art of cinema (images and sounds). Hence, I place Bergman about a league below Tarkovsky on my list, though some of his best movies are better than Tarkovsky's weak movies. Also I noticed that people here that each film should be decided on a case by case basis. People saying "all Bergman" should think each case a little more carefully. |
