There are loads of good film titles.
Here's another 10. 1. The Opposite of Sex 2. Rebel Without A Cause 3. The Man Who Wasn't There 4. O Brother Where Art Thou? 5. Raising Arizona 6. Good Will Hunting 7. Dog Day Afternoon 8. All Quiet on the Western Front 9. Arsenic and Old Lace 10. The Maltese Falcon A Title should grab you. I don't think Hollywood puts enough thought into them. They should have something to do with the film generally, but this shouldn't be a rule. A good film title is like poetry. It says a lot in a few words. Crappy Titles include Boiler Room, Wonder Boys, Frequency, Executive Decision, True Crime, Desperate Measures and the worst title ever... (drum roll please)... STEPMOM... I won't see the movie on my principles that a bad title is a bad movie. |
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965) Russ Meyer

|
Yes, very good one, Silver. How could I forget that? Funny, funny movie...and a great title, indeed.
|
bravo on the thread idea Holden! i had never thought about the title separate from the film before now, at least not consciously and i find myself being affected by my opionion of the film even now when i try to focus on the title alone.
you guys have listed some great ones.....i'll second- Raising Arizona Being John Malkovich Back to the Future The Silence of the Lambs The 39 Steps Arsenic and Old Lace One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest A Clockwork Orange Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and i'll add- The Trouble With Harry Detour Stir of Echoes The Spiral Staircase The Blue Dahlia Snakepit The Glass Key The Glass Menagerie The Strange Love of Martha Ivers The Postman Always Rings Twice Kiss Me Deadly The Third man The Thin Man D.O.A. i seem to like most of the film noir classics titles! :p |
Dial 'M' For Murder
|
Still can't think of it....
|
what about
Reservoir Dogs Inventing the Abbots The Shawshank Redemption What About Bob? To a lesser degree Saving Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now. Also I agree on Good Will Hunting, Being John Malkovich, and A Clockwork Orange. |
"What About Bob?" -- good call. I thought of "The Shawshank Redemption," but I just didn't think it belonged. If they had kept the title of the book ("Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption"), though, I would've put it up there.

How about . . . (oldie) The Ten Dancing Fingers of Doctor Terwilliger?
And . . . Rocky Horror you-know-what And . . . The last you-know-what And . . . Dim Sum is a great title, if foriegn films count And . . . (if foriegn films count) Eat. Drink. Man. Woman Four Weddings and a Funeral The Big Chill And . . . The Summer of '42 (Or was it '42) And what was the title of that film -- THX-323 (Got the letters & numbers wrong but you know the one i mean?) Hey, they do that for a living. Make up names we just GOT TO see! Lov, Jozie |
The Dr. Suess flick is called The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953), Lucas' feature debut is called THX-1138 (1970), and it is indeed The Summer of '42 (1971) which was followed by the sequel The Class of '44 (1973).
As for "The last you-know-what", no I don't. The Last Starfighter, The Last Picture Show, The Last Dragon, The Last Remake of Beau Geste, The Last of the Mohicans, The Last Flight of Noah's Ark, The Last House on the Left, The Last Days of Disco, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, The Last Boy Scout, The Last Days of Pompeii, The Last Detail, The Last of the Blue Devils...care to be more specific? |
The Last time she'll be making THAT mistake...
My Life as a Dog is another. |
I have to say, I usually am pretty satisfied with movie titles, except when I was trying to think of my favorites, all I could think of was my least favorite...so I'll put those down instead.
Braveheart: I think that movie is poorly titled, sounds cheesy. Stepmom: I couldn't BELIEVE that one. SO stupid. Duece Bigalow Male Gigalo: Or how EVER you spell it, it seriously bites. Gone in 60 Seconds: This is stupid; even stupider when you think of all the movies with numbers in the title that came out around the same time. Summer Catch: Oooooooh...it's a play on words, clever. Some good ones: Sixteen Candles Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas American Beauty The Usual Suspects Iron Giant Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss ( if you haven't seen this movie, it's the family from A Christmas Story, on vacation. Too funny!) |
