CiCi's Top Ten Opening Kills
 

In a lot of cases, horrors are best remembered for the gruesome and relentless murders they depict instead of the plots they explore. However, the most effective films will use their opening kill to appropriately set the tone for the remainder of the feature, in addition to letting us know exactly what we're in for, and what we should fully expect from the film.

Because it's my favourite genre too, this list will only feature horrors because I'm not knowledgeable enough to make a list consisting of every genre, and it would probably be a bit crappy if that was the case anyway :lol:

10. Saw VI (2009) - Sliced and Diced
The sixth addition to the seemingly never ending series sort of revitalised the franchise a little bit after the previous two additions were abysmal failures in almost every aspect. It was filled with an abundance of fun traps, but none more so than the one in the opening scene, involving a duo of corrupt financiers who Jigsaw doesn't look upon too favourably. Featuring the winner of MTV's Scream Queens, Ms Tanedra Howard, the scene is pretty intense, with an effective use of gore, reasonably good acting, and is just pretty well executed (with no pun intended there I swear :p) overall.

I think the entire Saw franchise ended in the best way possible. Becoming a really self aware parody of itself. Not say the were great, but redeemable is the best word I could probably use.

They honestly should have just ended it with 3 :lol:

It's interesting that (although I've only seen the original) The Human Centipede appears to have gone that way too. Granted the whole idea derived from a black joke in the first place so I suppose that's fair enough.

Saw, and what as I understand it has become known as "torture porn" never appealed to me. The opening of Jo Nesbø's The Leopard put me off straight away for similar reasons, so it's out there in other forms as well.

The Human Centipede was a horrible attempt at Body Horror. Never bothered with the second for aforementioned reasons, and I saw the poster for the third and it's a chain of prisoners as a human centipede, it made me laugh but it looks terrible. South Park's parody was better than the movies.

Saw was original and creative for the first few movies, (second film being my favorite, because the pit of needles was brutal) after saw 3 they got progressively less entertaining and the strength of the first three was sort of compromised by the final installments. Hostel as well was alright for the first movie, and after that it just wasn't as edgy, at a certain point gore gets boring when presented in abundance.

9. Ginger Snaps (2000) - Lycanthropy
Possibly the only addition to the countdown that features the attacker, and not the attacked, to bite the dust. But the first encounter of the mythical pooches in the much loved, Canadian indie hit Ginger Snaps was tense and atmospheric, in addition to never holding back in regards to its brutality. In fact, what made this particular scene more harrowing was the fact that a 16 year old woman was being viciously attacked here, and she had to endure a lot. But justice prevailed in the end, with the hound unexpectedly getting knocked over by a giant truck.

My favorite opening kill of all time is Tina on A Nightmare on Elm Street. Still Freddy's best kill ever.

I don't know about justice prevailing, that chick was a pretty big b*tch, and she kind of had it coming. lol

I remember the Ginger Snaps kill, a very nice choice.

Well, she was attacked because she had a period, so I'd say in that case anyway it's fitting. I agree with you about her later on though, she gets unpleasant very quickly after this :lol:

Fun list! I look forward to more, definitely. Saw was bound to appear! :D And I don't mind how you twist the concept to have a great movie like Ginger Snaps appear either! Wuhuu

It really was :lol: it was between the openings of 6 and 4, that one where one is blind and one is mute and they just go ape at each other with axes, it was the only good scene in that one :lol:

I'll do my best to satisfy the almighty Judy, although I expect she's into some pretty hardcore stuff!

8. 28 Weeks Later (2007) - Paradise Lost

I wasn't a big fan of the film overall, but the opening segment was all too reminiscent of the horrific and grotesque nature of its predecessor. Set in an idyllic, serene, and picturesque corner of the English countryside, all hell quickly breaks loose after a small group of survivors decide to offer refuge to a young boy. The violence here actually seems authentic, and this one is successfully packed with drama as well, partly due to the prowess of its actors. And all in the space of 5 minutes or so!

That opening scene in 28 Weeks Later is super intense; brilliant!

Is that the one where she's being dragged up the bedroom wall? That was pretty disturbing.
