2020 Movie Challenge
Here we go again! As per your request, here is the 3rd annual edition of the Movie Challenge!
As always, some new challenges have been added to help us explore different types of films or aspects of the film-making process. The overall number of films has been reduced by around 10 films in order to diversify the Nightmare Mode even more. Instead of having certain categories require 20 films to be completed, everything has been cut down to 10 and some new, thematically connected categories have been added.

Saved for Later...also Roger Ebert again...how about Complex top 100 http://www.flickchart.com/Charts.aspx?franchise=921 Empire's Top 100 World Cinema http://www.flickchart.com/Charts.aspx?franchise=956 Leonard Maltin's 150 Best films you've never seen http://www.flickchart.com/Charts.aspx?franchise=686 Slant's 100 films of the 90's http://www.flickchart.com/Charts.aspx?franchise=958 WGA's 100 funniest Screenplays http://www.flickchart.com/Charts.aspx?franchise=988 |
Thanks @Siddon. I will check these out and maybe swap Ebert out next year. Fact is he has more than 350 films on that list, so there is a much bigger chance there are at least 10 in there that even cinephiles like the ones in MoFo won't have seen.

Re: 2020 Movie Challenge
Yeah, if there's a problem with most (if not all) those lists it's that they're relatively short and already have a lot of films on there that cinephiles are likely to have seen already. Since watching films from the Criterion Collection or 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die are part of the main challenge, maybe watching ten from either of those can be part of the extended challenge.

I will try to actually do this. It's a good way to participate in the community, and I haven't been active much lately.

[/collapse] Are you talking about this challenge?
...And the Oscar goes to...
Watch 10 films that have won an Academy Award in any category If you are referring to this one:
Live from the Dolby Theater!
Watch every film nominated in 2019 for the Academy Award for Best Picture In any case, that is the point of this challenge. To make us step outside our respective comfort zones and watch some things we might ordinarily avoid.

Indeed, either of those could work due to volume and diversity of films. Feel free to substitute, or even amend Nightmare mode to your individual challenges. |

10 Filmmakers is going to be tricky for me....
If I do re-watches...Terence Fisher I could do in a weekend. On the other hand Sam Peckinpah is someone whose oeuvre I've barely touched on so lots of blind watches there. Then you've got Guy Hamilton who has six films I'd love to rewatch (4 Bond movies, 2 Agatha Christies) |
My progress...
(might just swap out "Ghibli" for anime in general on account of having seen every Ghibli feature already)

Going to start this up this week. Wooo! My first challenge here 😃

Re: 2020 Movie Challenge
I am going to do this, but it is obvious I cannot rely strictly on what I own ( i own over 600 dvd's) or what I can get on netflix. Can someone help me with alternate sources for some of the more obscure movies on my list:
Raw Nerves: A lacanian Thriller (Cinema of Transgression) Any suggestions for studio Ghibli and a source where I can rent Any suggestions for renting Where the Wind Blows an animated feature Any Suggestios for renting the Apu tilogy? Any suggestions for Ali Baba and the forty Thieves 1942? |
Re: 2020 Movie Challenge
Amazon video on demand started up an option to rent now, you can try there if you have it

Hopefully I can finish this year. Started with the easiest one :)

Re: 2020 Movie Challenge
Thinking about how a real challenge for nightmare mode would be to watch 10 films directed by women. I know it's become a challenge elsewhere to watch 52 films by women in the space of a year, so I think ten should be easy enough.

2. Cinema of Transgression
You do know this is porn correct? |

Hey, Jabs, if you’re looking to add any categories for next year, there’s a couple that really looking interesting to consider.
Watch one winner or you can choose 20 nominees from the following awards: Blue Dragon awards (Best South Korean films) Grand Bell awards (South Korean equivalent of the Oscars) Japan Academy Film prize Golden Horse awards (Taiwan) Chinese Film Media awards David Di Donatello Awards (Italian equivalent to the Oscars) Cesar Awards (French equivalent to the Oscars) The Lola Awards (German equivalent to the Oscars) I think these would represent a broad spectrum of foreign films that normally don’t get recognized often enough. What do you think? |

What do you think? It is definitely an interesting avenue to explore. I can see this working for a few of the categories at a time in the main challenge. For the nightmare mode though (where you would need 10-20 films) this would probably not work because the matter of availability comes into play. For instance, how easy would it be for everyone to find at least 10 Taiwanese films for the Golden Horse awards challenge? |
