Always had time for Alan Arkin. He was great in "The In-Laws" and truly inspired in the classic "Freebie and the Bean".

My favorite Arkin movie is:

One of the most suspenseful and creepiest films I've ever seen. Arkin was amazingly nefarious!

How did I forget that one!?
He's superb in that. And wonderfully sadistic. His famous 'out of the darkness leap' still works!

Hell, this link rule is dumb. Because of a link in the OTHER PERSON'S post I can't quote it!

Yes, I do. It's not that he died. Shouldn't the thread be called something else like What's your favorite Alan Arkin movie, Who likes Alan Arkin, Alan Arkin appreciation thread or something other than what it is? Just my observation.

Alan Arkin is one of those actors whose effect is greater than the roles he has played. I loved him as the drug addled, porn addicted grampa in Little Miss Sunshine and He is unforgettable as Yossarian.

My favorite line in an Alan Arkin movie is said to his character rather than by his character.

Serpentine, Shel! Serpentine!

OMG, I love that scene. I remember laughing so hard in the theatre.

Arkin is amazing.

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned Arkin's Oscar-nominated break-through role in The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! (1966)in which he easily switched back and forth between drama and comedy. It's up there with his dramtic turn in Wait Until Dark (1967) and his comic role in The In-Laws as his best performance. He also got an Oscar nomination for The Heart is a Lonely Hunter in 1968.

1997 was a great year for Arkin with one of his funniest performances as a hit-man's psychiatrist in the very good Grosse Point Blank and a straight dramatic role as an US ambassador taken hostage in Four Days in September.

I enjoyed his earlier supporting roles in both Edward Sissorhands and The Rocketeer. He made a good stab at the Yossarian role, but even Arkin couldn't save that stink bomb from Buck Henry's dumb-downed interpretation of Catch 22.
