Always had time for Alan Arkin. He was great in "The In-Laws" and truly inspired in the classic "Freebie and the Bean".

His famous 'out of the darkness leap' still works! Hell, this link rule is dumb. Because of a link in the OTHER PERSON'S post I can't quote it! |

Alan Arkin is one of those actors whose effect is greater than the roles he has played. I loved him as the drug addled, porn addicted grampa in Little Miss Sunshine and He is unforgettable as Yossarian.
My favorite line in an Alan Arkin movie is said to his character rather than by his character.
Serpentine, Shel! Serpentine!

1997 was a great year for Arkin with one of his funniest performances as a hit-man's psychiatrist in the very good Grosse Point Blank and a straight dramatic role as an US ambassador taken hostage in Four Days in September. I enjoyed his earlier supporting roles in both Edward Sissorhands and The Rocketeer. He made a good stab at the Yossarian role, but even Arkin couldn't save that stink bomb from Buck Henry's dumb-downed interpretation of Catch 22. |
