My #31 Favorite 30's Actress is
https://www.movieforums.com/communit...1&d=1509761560 Clara Bow Filmography Biography Clara Bow is mostly known for her work in the silent films of the 1920s, but she made 8 films in the early 1930s. Most of them aren't well remembered today, with one exception. One of the most risque and daring precode films ever made, Call Her Savage (1932) A film that broke barriers by not only showing an American Indian as a handsome leading man, but by showing interracial relationship and according to the documentary film The Celluloid Closet, Call Her Savage was the first Hollywood movie to depict a gay cabaret with the scene of singing gay waiters. Add to that martial rape, prostitution and supposedly an early depiction of sadomasochism and you get a provocative movie. And it's Clara Bow who powers the film. Her acting can be uneven at times and she reportedly suffered from anxiety, but no doubt she has screen presences in abundance! |

Re: Citizen's Top 62, 1930s Actors & Actresses
love the fact that you post links for us to check out their movies and absolutely love that photo of her.
It does not look like I've seen any of her work or the one you talk of, but definitely a pre-code film to check out! EDIT: Here's something I just discovered, one of the actresses in that movie is Thelma Todd whom I'm familar with and, looking through her list of movies I found The Maltese Falcon and no, not the Bogart film we all know and love, but one made ten years BEFORE in 1931 with a Ricardo Cortez playing Sam Spade. I wonder if there's a copy of that around to check out. . . hey, @mark f, by any chance, do you know anything about this one? |
Glad you are doing this Citizen, good idea for a list. I only just watched my 40th 1930's film today so i'm not going to be familiar with the majority of the people on this list, it will be good for recs though. Also i may be more familiar with their 40's work if they were still working then.
Only seen Clara Bow in Wings and i barely remember that so can't comment on her. |

Wonder if there's anyone that prefers that to Hustons. |
Thanks guys, appreciate it.
Damn just making that photo and post took some time, which gives me a new appreciation for others who have done Countdowns. Clara Bow got me into films! I was at the Barnes and Nobles book store some 15 years ago shopping with my wife and stumbled across a book called Sin in Soft Focus. The woman on the cover was a knock out, but I didn't know who it was as I didn't know anything about old movies. So I looked and found it was Clara Bow and then bought all of her movies I could get...from that point on, I was a movie fan...All thanks to Clara |

looks like I'll have to update my flashplayer to check it out, but DAMN I am curious about that one.
And I am curious if anyone has seen it and, like you, if they prefer it and I can see WHY she was so captivating to you, Citizen. I'm curious to see her movies as well. |

I have chrome and right now, at work, so I'll play with it when I'm home.
I think I've seen that book, Citizen, let us know what ya think. While searching I did come across one of those Scandal shows about Clara but I think I'd rather go the less shock value route to learn about her. |

That sounds good it's now on the wishlist. |

THANKS Camo.
Billie Holiday's story IS very heartbreaking and from the notes in the youtube video Clara's sounded pretty horrible as well. Some mention of an absolute b@stard for a father along with a crazy mom. some one wrote that their grandfather met her once and said she was a real sweetheart. |

thanks @mark f! I knew, if anyone would know about this, you would. I watched that clip of the '31 version as well. Definitely see the sexual atmosphere cranked up instead of implied in the '31. Definitely worth checking out.

Fab idea for a thread!
I'm not that familiar with the work of Clara Bow but I am fairly conversant with her brother Dickie. |
