The film, obviously enough I suppose, looks nothing like the rather racy cover (common practise with low budget Fantasy videos) but I've kept is because of one interesting feature - it stars the poor girl who befriended Phil Spector, Lana Clarkson. She was a fine lookin' woman. :) |

The Criterion Collection Brazil cover gets my vote for the best. And it's not even close. My old roomate owned a huge framed poster of it - The single most beautiful thing I have ever seen. This picture does not do it justice.

As for the worst, it's the opposite of that: when they ditch the original movie poster for the dreaded "floating heads" of a key star or two or even worse throw some cheap-ass generic thing on there that doesn't even clue you in to what movie it's supposed to be. For the first, check out Open Range. It had a pretty cool poster, but obviously some genius in the marketing department decided a stock shot of some galloping horses being haunted by the floating heads of the film's three biggest stars would be a whale of a lot better. What the fart?

The answer is twofold. First on a representational level, they wanted a couple examples of the mainstream, big budget, effects-laden pieces of Pop Culture that routinely rule the box office. Bruckheimer & Bay, while having little to no artistic merit, are definitely representative of the late '90s slick blockbuster. If you want to have a sense of the entire scope of cinema history, you'd need at least a couple examples of just about everything. Not every movie in The Criterion Collection (DVD or LaserDisc) is an acknowledged "classic" in the sense most people would apply that word to film. Yes they have many titles from the likes of Kurosawa, Bergman, Hitchcock, Fellini, etc., but they also have titles such as Equinox (1970), The Blob (1958) and The Atomic Submarine (1959), I think none of which would be readily praised for their artistry, even by the people at Criterion, yet are representative of a kind of B-movie that had popularity for a couple decades. The second reason is to fill the coffers with moneys from the segment of the DVD market that doesn't usually buy Criterion products. Armageddon was just the fortieth title released and The Rock was the hundred and eighth (Ang Lee's The Ice Storm is due out in March and will be the four-hundred twenty-sixth title released by Criterion, and that number doesn't even include their new Eclipse Series boxed sets which adds another thirty-seven films). Plus both Michael Bay films were issued by Criterion on Laser Disc before DVD even came to be, so they already had all the supplemental material collected and ready to go. So...like that. |

Off topic, but kind of related to your comments on The Proud Ones. It upsets me when I go into Wal-Mart and see something like The Fountain sitting on the self, but the fullscreen edition. People who are interested in The Fountain will not buy the fullscreen version, and people who want fullscreen movies, will likely not pick up The Fountain. I don't like how these films titles get changed around. I think the original titles without their series name before them - gives them more power as an individual film.

A one-joke premise if there ever was one, but this isn't about the inherent quality of the movie. Exact same movie inside, but this one replaces the numerous joints for a cloud of smoke. What in tarnation is the point of this? If you have the kind of business or home, for that matter, where you are presumably worried about a young, impressionable person seeing a photo of a man comically smoking a dozen reefers at once...is this a movie you are ever going to stock or purchase in the first place?!? Who is this protecting, exactly? Is WAL-MART going to put the smoke-only version on their store shelves because they like the idea of making a buck off of the movie but don't want to "offend" with the cover? Doubt it. Don't know where you live in Portland, Pimpy, but Movie Madness over on SE Belmont definitely has multiple copies of it. And if you have a library card you can reserve the entire Criterion Collection five-film eight-disc set (they have it cataloged as "John Cassavetes Five Films") which you can reserve on their website HERE. There are only two holds right now on their eleven copies of the set, so I'll bet you could have it at your nearest library in a week or so and then you've got those discs for about three weeks. The Criterion version is definitely the one to rent, check out or buy. The Multnomah County Library system doesn't have the Criterion edition of Days of Heaven, though they do have the previous Paramount disc. I love the DVD case for the "Ulitimate Rambo Collection" but the only plroblem ive got with it is, it doest say what it is on the side of the boxset. Its a very nice boxset and you can tell what it is just when its in my cabinet YOU CANT SEE THE NAME that is the only thing wrong with it lol

Remember that scene in the movie where a completely naked and heavily tattooed Woody Allen has a knife fight with Alan Alda's goons in the steambath because he wouldn't kill Scarlett Johansson and the baby? Eastern Dream? Cassandra's Promises? I mean, it's better than floating heads...but not much better. |

The DVD cover art for The Last Seduction is fantastic and done in true noir fashion. The fact that it's just her on the cover with the cigerette in her mouth emphasis the film's title even more. This IS the definitive seduction. Iconic stuff.

I like ones with just one photo and no extra bits. DVD covers like Ichi the Killer grab your attention alot more than ones like the Bourne Supremecy. |

The movie was so-so, but the 3D Holographic cover for "Day of the Dead" was pretty cool in my book.

Anyway, I believe I have a new nominee for "worst DVD cover I've ever seen" - went through my collection recently and I would like to nominate a badly-done cover for what is actually one of my favourite movies...The Warriors. This is the film's original poster, which fits into the brilliant "hand-drawn" mold... http://thisdistractedglobe.com/wp-co...-poster-ii.jpg Compare it to the Ultimate Director's Cut cover, which is a stock photo that has been very badly Photoshopped onto a graffiti background. I agree with Holds and whomever else has praised Criterion for it's cover art, I think they've set a whole new standard in that department. My two favorites thus far have been Brazil and Days of heaven...until I saw the cover for Dreyer's Vampyr (which is what prompted me to search for this thread). I see it's already been posted here, but it wouldn't hurt to see it again...

The Dark Knight has some of the worst theatrical posters ever. The motorbike cover and the cover of Batman standing in front of a building with the fire shaped like a Batsignal. That teaser poster for The Dark Knight was the best poster for that film I've seen. |

The pet peeve of mine is when they make a DVD cover that not only bears little or no resemblance to the original, and instead misrepresents the tone or content.
For instance the 1983 Michael Douglas ethical drama http://204.244.128.121/assets/produc...473.1020.A.jpg became http://www3.mediaboxchina.com/cdn/1274456562-6912.jpg If you have seen the movie, you know Douglas plays a Judge with a crisis of conscience, who at no point in the film brandishes a firearm. |
