Definitely. Alien should be on this list as well.

Popping back in. Glad you mentioned Neon Demon, so that made me think of Winding Refn's other work in Drive and Only God Forgives. I much preferred the former but look at some of the shots from OGF!!

Very pleased to see The Man Who Wasn't There on your list, a couple I would have included:

Barry Lyndon

The Shining

Barton Fink

I'm not sure where to start and in which order to do it, in fact this won't even be a complete top 10 as there are so many I can chop and change but here goes:

Anybody mentioned Curse Of The Golden Flower yet?

Ridley Scott's The Duellists (1977) is a beautiful-looking film.

I'm also thinking back to Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) and The Horseman on the Roof (1995).

Werner Herzog's output has to be counted too, especially Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972).

The best-looking film I've ever seen is Akira Kurosawa's Ran.

Other top ones are (in the order they come to mind)...
Blade Runner
Lawrence of Arabia
Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet
Big Fish
Suspicion

I agree. It's hard to overestimate the breathtaking effect the film and its panoramic cinematography by F.A. Young had on the audiences of 1962. It was so powerful that I still enjoy watching it today.

I'm sure the collective impression was on a par with the reaction that Griffith's work had on early silent film audiences.

i usually watch heat just to look at the scenery and they way Micheal Mann shows us Los angeles, to me the feel of this film is the same as To live and Die in LA, same kind of scenery
