Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
Mine are:
Annie Hall Hannah and her sisters Crimes and Misdemeanors Manhattan Love & Death/ Sleeper Ok maybe top 6, what are yours? |
Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
As a director:
Hannah and Her Sisters Crimes and Misdemeanors Bullets Over Broadway Manhattan Manhattan Murder Mystery I'd have to add Play It Again, Sam if we include films he wrote and starred in, although Herbert Ross directed it. There are many others which are on the cusp and could be included without my feeling guilty. |
This is in no particular order:
Love and Death Midnight in Paris Bullets over Broadway Annie Hall Purple Rose of Cairo This is very difficult to choose because each of his films are so unique and powerful in different ways. Crimes and Misdemeanors should probably be on that list as well. |
Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
The early funny ones. The worst is when he is foolish enough to think he is Ingmar Bergman. Not only is Interiors a very bad movie, it is one of the worst movies ever made by someone who wasn't named Ed Wood.
|
I've got some pretty big gaps here, and probably some unusual opinions, but I tend to like his goofier efforts. In order, my favorites are:

That just missed my top 5. Decent enough (if uneven), and extra points for being MST3K's progenitor.

Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
Annie Hall
Sweet and Low Down Manhattan Murder Mystery Crimes & Misdemeanors Purple Rose of Cairo There are a bunch I'd need to see again before knowing how to rank them all, and a few that might bump some off of this top five... |
Good question:
Sleeper Crimes and Misdemeanors Hannah and Her Sisters Everybody Says I Love You Annie Hall |
Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
I mean, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy is also a Bergman movie, Smiles of a Summer Night, to be exact. Do you hate that too?
And let's see... Manhattan Bullets over Broadway Annie Hall Hannah and Her Sisters Zelig This list is just what I'm feeling right now. I love so many of them, it's so hard to choose just five! |
Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
Annie Hall
Sleeper The Purple Rose of Cairo Zelig Love and Death |

Really really enjoyed Midnight in Paris. Allen's jab at the "crypto-facist airhead zombies" tea party was delicious and perfect.

As Director
Broadway Danny Rose Crimes and Misdemeanors Radio Days Annie Hall Hannah and Her Sisters Others The Front - actor Play It Again Sam - writer, actor. |
Could only come up with a top ten.

Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
I'm going to be (deliberately) controversial with my #5 pick:
1) Crimes and Misdemeanors 2) Stardust Memories 3) Manhattan 4) Bullets Over Broadway 5) Celebrity Do I actually think Celebrity is a better film than for instance Radio Days or Hannah and Her Sisters? Probably not, but I do love it quite a bit and it astounds me that I'm one of the very few people who does. |

My three favorite Woody Allen movies are Midnight in Paris, Zelig, and Match Point. I don't think it's an accident that they are all very different movies. A number of his movies just blend together as one group of quality
Four and five are tricky, I guess I'll go safe with Annie Hall and Everything you ever wanted to know about sex.... |
Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
Over Christmas I bought my 50th Woody Allen film. That wraps up the movies he wrote and directed plus some of his earlier films that he wrote and starred in. I still need a few that he wrote like Don't Drink the water (both versions) A Crisis inn Six scenes if it is ever released on Video, and his shorts if they are available.

Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
1. Manhattan
2. Midnight in Paris 3. Crimes and Misdemeanors 4. Hannah and Her Sisters 5. Zelig 6. Annie Hall I've said elsewhere I love Woody Allen's films. Manhattan is his masterpiece. I can watch Midnight in Paris over and over, and I pretty much did the first year of its release. I usually watch Hannah and Her Sisters every November, though I sort of skipped it this year, except it was on TCM or something shortly after Thanksgiving and I caught chunks of it. There's only a few of his that are a real chore to get through. |

This is tough. These are my favorites. Although I could easily change my mind here.

I really enjoy most of his films that I've seen, but top 5 for me at this time:
1. Broadway Danny Rose 2. Annie Hall 3. Sleeper 4. Zelig 5. Bananas |
Probably my least favorite director, ever.
Sorry... |
Manhattan = Annie Hall
Other Woody Allen films |
Sorry, but none. He's my least favorite actor.

With probably the most notable filmography in the history of cinema, it is impossible to list only 5 of his films.
I think only 3-4 of them can't be called masterpieces. I've seen most of his films numerous times (some of them 10-12 times and can't stop do it). Woody is also superb when act in his works. It took me some time to get used to when he stopped acting. For a man like me who just live with the art in his veins, I can't imagine the life without a new movie by Allen every year and constant re-watch of all titles in his catalog. Anyway, here are my top 10 listed chronologically: • Take the Money and Run • Annie Hall • Broadway Danny Rose • Hannah and Her Sisters • Radio Days • Husbands and Wives • Deconstructing Harry • Vicky Cristina Barcelona • Whatever Works • You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger --- Damn, can't stop...what a feast... • The Curse of the Jade Scorpion • To Rome With Love • A Rainy Day in New York |
Manhattan
Annie Hall Stardust Memories Love and Death Hannah and Her Sisters |
Annie Hall
Stardust Memories (surprised how much this has people split on it) The Purple Rose of Cairo Love and Death Crimes and Misdemeanors |
I've only seen Manhattan and Annie Hall. I think the former film is great and the latter film is good.
|
Got a bunch of blind spots but here we go:
Annie Hall Sleeper Bananas Broadway Danny Rose Play it Again, Sam (an honorary Allen movie, if not one he actually directed) |
Re: Top 5 favorite Woody Allen films
Zelig
Midnight in Paris Bullets over Broadway Love and Death Bananas, or... dunno, maybe I should mention also one of the Manhattan/Annie Hall subgenre, some are very good but my memories of them have merged a bit. |
Only seen three, so three it is....
Don't @ me :shifty: |
1. Stardust Memories
2. Zelig 3. Love and Death 4. Broadway Danny Rose 5. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask |
