Strange Days
 

Overlooked 1995 cyberpunk thriller that I rewatched recently and forgot how good it is. Love it's gritty atmosphere and it's one of those Sci-Fi films that feels realistic and plausible, all the moreso considering the themes it tackles such as police brutality, racism and voyeurism, all themes that feel even more relevant in light of recent events as well as what we see on the internet. It does a great job of blending in cyberpunk with elements of noir and mystery in a very seamless fashion. It's a shame it bombed so badly back in 1995 but in more recent years it's gotten proper recognition and respect as it deserves. It's scary to watch it nowadays with how eerily close it mirrors real-life.

I've never seen it but I'd like to. Isn't it based on the original Blade Runner script?

A top 20 movie for me

Don't believe so but I could be wrong. I do recall reading Blade Runner was an inspiration for this film.

This is a really good movie. Kind of weird to think of Ralph Fiennes as the lead in a sci-fi noir.

I'm not really up to speed on Bigelow's filmography but you can definitely see the beginnings of her socially conscious work from Zero Dark Thirty and maybe even Detroit in this.

I read that apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger of all people at the time was considered for Lenny Nero. I can't see him as Nero at all, I think Fiennes was perfectly casted. Probably my favorite role of his.

This movie has an excellent soundtrack as well. So much good music.

I've seen seen parts of Strange Days, but never the full movie. I'll give it a complete watch in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for reminding me of it.
