After doing several decade countdowns which covered every decade in cinema (except the 2020s, of course, but we still have several more years to go before we start that one), we will now be doing the Movie Forums' Top 100 of the 2010s. So sit back, get your popcorn ready, and start assembling your ballots! COUNTDOWN RULES
In order to submit your ballot, use the ballot submission link posted below: https://www.movieforums.com/ballot.php HOW TO USE IT
In case you encounter any issues with the ballot submission tool, let either Yoda or I know and we'll help you out. Aside from the release dates of all films being required to be listed as 2010-2019 on IMDb, here are a few more eligibility rules:
NOTE: Since there's no recommendation thread for this countdown, feel free to post recommendations in this thread. I'll be doing that as well, in fact. So, with all that being said, start watching/rewatching films from the 2010s, assemble your ballots, be sure to respect the opinions and tastes of others in this thread, and may the best 2010s film win! Ballots: 1) Tugg 2) Holden Pike 3) John W Constantine 4) Steve Freeling 5) ueno_station54 6) MovieBuffering 7) Nope1172 8) MovieFan1988 9) LAMb EELYAK 10) Guaporense 11) Torgo 12) Ash TheStrangeOne 13) mrblond 14) Kaplan 15) Allaby 16) pahaK 17) Hey Fredrick 18) Deschain 19) Thursday Next 20) Cobpyth 21) Wigram 22) Fabulous 23) The Rodent 24) seanc 25) ahwell 26) Citizen Rules 27) John Dumbear 28) Mr. Sunshine 29) donniedarko 30) mark f 31) Daniel M 32) Harry Lime 33) ScarletLion 34) dadgumblah 35) MovieMeditation 36) Miss Vicky 37) rauldc14 38) matt72582 49) culliford 40) Thief 41) Siddon 42) xSookieStackhouse 43) Burning 44) GulfportDoc 45) mattiasflgrtll6 46) urkillinmesmalls 47) Supercraig 48) kgaard 49) CharlesAoup 50) MovieMad16 51) mojofilter 52) Slentert 53) John McClane 54) WorldFilmGeek 55) beelzebubble 56) PHOENIX74 57) iluv2viddyfilms 58) Chypmunk 59) Kaiju39 60) John-Connor 61) crumbsroom 62) Frightened Inmate No. 2 63) cricket 64) Captain Spaulding 65) Wyldesyde19 66) KeyserCorleone 67) Takoma11 68) thracian dawg 69) honeykid 70) CosmicRunaway 71) aronisred 72) WHITBISSELL! 73) Mr Minio 74) edarsenal 75) Little Ash 76) gbgoodies 77) gandalf26 78) Iroquois 79) SpelingError 80) WrinkledMind 81) I_Wear_Pants 82) Sedai 83) Diehl40 84) sawduck 85) Okay 86) ChunkyMonkey 87) Loner 88) jiraffejustin 89) Austruck 90) Yoda 91) ApexPredator 92) CaptainT 93) Wooley 94) TheUsualSuspect 95) WBadger 96) Followthrough 97) sarah f 98) this_is_the_girl |

And we're off!
Thanks Speling. |

Glad to see this thread up and running, I know you'll make an awesome host!...time to start watching some 2010s movies!!!

Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the 2010s - Preliminary Thread
I wonder who will be first to submit their ballot.
|
Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the 2010s - Preliminary Thread
Also, since I have access to the results as they come in, I'll try to submit my ballot fairly early.
|
Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the 2010s - Preliminary Thread
Thanks for hosting this Speling, I'm sure you'll do an absolutley spifing job! :)

The test ballot I submitted will likely be similar to my final ballot though. |
Ah yes, the 2010s. The only countdown where it's entirely possible for my ballot to contain a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, a Wes Anderson movie, and/or a Woody Allen movie. :D
|
Hell yes! Finally we are rolling!
And with a flawless fella at the helm who will indeed do well though he is sporting an unlucky username, which he will hopefully not live up to when compiling the final list. :p Jk, I’m sure this will be great and I can’t wait to compile what will probably be my most difficult list yet… Being born in the mid 90s and thereby having most of my childhood watchings in the 00s and most of my growing cinephile watchings in the 2010s, it’s most certainly going to be a tough list to put together for me. Just off the top of my head I have several picks I want on my list so I’m very excited for how it’s all going to turn out - both for me and the final list. Hopefully I’ll have time for some rewatches as well as some new watches. |
Finally, a countdown thread where I can put Slow Torture Puke Chamber as my one-pointer.

Here are Sight & Sounds' respective lists from 2010-2019 in case anyone's curious:

From those BFI lists, I guess it should be stated that Twin Peaks: The Return isn't eligible for this.
I'd have to double-check, but OJ: Made in America... wasn't that also part of a TV series or am I conflating that with another athlete-based documentary from the last decade (there were a few that got a lot of praise that I never watched). |
O.J.: Made in America will be way up high on my list.
|
The deadline to submit your ballot is: December 12, 2022. Damn, I better get started! |

The thread organizer/host posted links to a respectable film magazine that included it in its best films of the year list. I felt like it needed to be overtly stated. I personally don't consider it for any "best films of the x" list because to me it's a TV series, but if the ground rules are set that it meets the requirements (on the, it's an 18 hour long movie, broken into hour long segments, argument, which not an insignificant number of people do), then I'd put it back into play and have to adjust my list accordingly. |
Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the 2010s - Preliminary Thread
Yeah, probably should've stated that Twin Peaks: The Return and any other mini series which may be on those lists aren't eligible for this list. Still though, a great deal of international films can be found in those links, so if you're looking for recommendations, those lists are great places to start.

Also, Holden Pike is the first user to submit a ballot!
|
I probably won't be submitting until close to the deadline. I have a handful of movies I haven't seen that I want to watch and a list of 82 possibles - most of which need to be rewatched before I can give them fair consideration.

Some of my recommendations:
Tomboy (2011) The Wise Kids (2011) Beyond the Hills (2012) It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012) Córki dancingu (2015) Mustang (2015) Cigarettes et chocolat chaud (2016) Black Cop (2017) Thunder Road (2018) Justine (2019) |

Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the 2010s - Preliminary Thread
Some "left field" recommendations that might or not make my ballot. I'll spread them by years and post all of them as the weeks go by, so let's start with 2010...
Beyond the Black Rainbow - Weird and icky, probably "not for everyone", as much as I hate that term, but it sticks with you. From the director of Mandy. The Man from Nowhere - Takoma will probably throw this as well, and it was also featured on a HoF. Great action film a-la John Wick. Sarah's Key - Powerful French drama starring Kristin Scott Thomas as a journalist trying to find the truth about a Jewish family from World War II. King of Devil's Island - European drama about a rebellious teenager at a juvenile facility in 1915. Reminded me a bit of Cool Hand Luke, but it's still well done and well acted. Especially by Stellan Skarsgard as the director of the facility. Four Lions - This one got one of my lower spots on the recent Comedy Countdown. Starring Riz Ahmed, among several others, it tackles the subject of terrorism, Islam, etc. with intelligent and thought-provoking humor. |

Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the 2010s - Preliminary Thread
I guess I'll mention my top comedy ballot entries from the 2010's (plus the one I just completely blanked on when thinking about my ballot):
I'm in my vague pre-Halloween viewing and October's going to be my pure Halloween viewing, so I suspect I'll take my time on this. I've been meaning to watch the following and they could conceivably be considered for a list I'd put together, so I'd like to get them in before submitting:
From all of those BFI lists, I'd strongly recommend the following pair of movies if you haven't seen them: The Act of Killing The Look of Silence I'd like to revisit Moonlight, Anomalisa, and The Lobster. I tried putting together an off the cuff, top-x list of the decade a year or two back, but some movies I've seen since then that I now need to consider if I'd shuffle them into a top 25 for the decade: First Cow Asako I&II Phoenix Ain't Them Body Saints The Rider Other than that, we got some notable PTA movies, a few Coen brothers movies (one of which I particularly love, but don't consider it a comedy), and a decade that saw a rise of art-house horror movies and A24 (both genre and non-genre films). Plus Kelly Reichardt had Meek's Cutoff in the beginning of the decade and Debra Granik's Leave No Trace close to the end of it. And I'm sure A Ghost Story will be very touching for some and utterly lame for others. If someone were to ask me to describe some of my highlights for the decade, it'd probably be that. |
Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the 2010s - Preliminary Thread
Oh, I forgot the "very good movies, that probably won't be on my ballot, unless I do a serious 'last minute reconsideration', but did happen that decade, and wouldn't be a shame other people voted for them," group:
|
Some recommendations:
The Great Beauty 2013 ‘La grande bellezza’ Paolo Sorrentino Uncut Gems 2019 Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie The Hunt 2012 ‘Jagten’ Thomas Vinterberg The Man from Nowhere 2010 Lee Jeong-beom (Glad to see the love for this one has grown around here, I'll fourth this recommendation. It's probably a lock for me.) Mud 2012 Jeff Nichols The Raid 2 2014 ‘Berandal’ Gareth Evans |

Mother! Mother! is delightfully demented, brilliantly twisted and blazingly original. Lawrence and Bardem are both excellent and Michelle Pfieffer and Ed Harris give strong supporting performances. Love it or hate it, this is one Mother! you won't soon forget. Wolf of Wall Street- Brilliantly directed by a legendary filmmaker with a fantastic performance from Leo DiCaprio, this is a wildly entertaining film. A must see. Uncut Gems- Sandler gives an excellent performance in this intense and satisfying gem. Tree of Life- An absolute masterpice and a beautiful, ambitious, profound experience. One of the greatest films of all time. Shame- An exceptionally well made film with fantastic performances. Intelligent, powerful, and satisfying. |

This list will be a travesty if The Florida Project doesn't make it
Originally Posted by donniedarko (Post 1908991)
https://media.gq.com/photos/59dd3e17...da-project.jpg The Florida Project Sean Baker's The Florida Project is an innovative film, brilliantly bringing the audience into the lives of the poor American. This ain't a blue collar film, or one of the working class, this film portrays the no collar. A minor, but aesthetically familiar, subgroup of American culture. However the film is effectively portrayed through a lens that's the any person has seen life through, regardless of class, the innocent perspective of a young child. There's no overbearing message the film tries to push on the audience, but there's a key lesson to take away on simplifying people. Moonee's mom, Halley, really fits the look of an irresponsible impoverished single mother who whores herself out. And she is, she's hotheaded, self-centered entitled, petty,a poor role model, and edges negligent. On the other hand she's social, appreciative, a hustler, and she cares about those close to her. She's no supermom but it's clear that she loves her daughter. Baker doesn't care about the poor decisions Halley undoubtedly made to get in this position, or the unfair outstanding circumstances in her life. The film looks at none of this, it's truly just a glimpse in the life of Halley and her daughter through a hot Florida summer. Brilliantly the film puts as much focus, and same style, on the significant moments and the daily events surrounding the summer. A house burning down and 3 kids getting ice cream gets the same attention, and focus on detail. It's shot- well like, life itself. No unnecessary dramatization. Similarly Baker didn't follow a trend that's common in realism works like this one. The film covers many dark topics and their consequences, but none of these are glamorized with graphic on screen sex, or abuse, or violence. It's all in the implications, and the subtle human emotion surrounding these events. I reckon most audience members relate most to Bobby, brilliantly portrayed by WIlliam Dafoe, since most audience members are Bobby. A caring observer with only so much power. Baker doesn't ask you to judge, or critique, or understand the characters. Just like Bobby this film drags you in to the lives of these characters as an observer, who will smile, laugh, and maybe cry with them. And just when you feel like you've known these people your whole life, poof their gone, their story will continue out of your sight (Just like with Bobby). A uniquely human piece, that accomplishes so much while doing so little. |
Nightcrawler will be high on mine too.
|
I loved Nightcrawler and I've been meaning to rewatch it. Perfect opportunity here.

Nightcrawler and The Florida Project are both great and deserve to make the list, although they likely won't make my ballot.

Recommendations for some 2010 Movies
https://i.postimg.cc/Z5MpyRz7/Easy-A.jpg One of my favorite High School movies, if you fan of those high school movies check this one out. https://i.postimg.cc/P5gNj8jj/MV5-BM...M2-Mj-I-V1.jpg This movie is like groundhog day but it's a horror movie with a teenage girl having to relive the same day and must track down the killer that keeps killing her over and over again. https://i.postimg.cc/tCPFVy4p/MV5-BY...DM0-NTU-V1.jpg I love seeing female leads in these kind of movies. The movie is about a female seeking justice on the gang that killed her daughter and husband. Also with Jennifer Gardner in it, she makes it enjoyable to watch. https://i.postimg.cc/SxMCC4Qm/Ted.jpg I'm surprised this didn't make the comedy countdown list, imo one of the funniest movies of 2010. |

@Takoma11
You have a lot of good stuff in there, so trying hard not to go above 5. I think these would be my picks... Melancholia - As I browsed the list, this is the first one that I really thought "lock" as soon as I read it. Powerful film, and I think you will at least appreciate what it's trying to do, even if it's not, umm, enjoyable. The Big Sick - On my Top 5 of romcoms. It's fun, it's emotional, it's well acted. Green Room - Maybe the "less complex" of this bunch, but certainly one that sticks with you. I know you're a fan of Blue Ruin, but don't come to this one expecting the same level of pathos. This is more visceral and horror-adjacent, but well done at that. Compliance - One that I will probably bring up in my "left field" recommendations. It's one of the most uncomfortable film-watching experiences I've had, made only worst by the realization that it all happened in real life. Ann Dowd is excellent in it. I'm gonna cheat in the last one, but Nightcrawler, Blue Jasmine, and Inside Llewyn Davis are all a showcase of their respective leading stars (Gyllenhaal, Blanchett, and Isaac). Blanchett's is on my Top 5 of Oscar-winning performances, while I consider it a travesty that Gyllenhaal wasn't nominated by this. Knowing you, I think the first two would be the ones that appeal more to you, but I could be wrong. Mind you, there's a lot more great stuff in that list, so I was just trying to Venn the ones I liked more with the ones I think you would appreciate more. One more cheat, but even though Before Midnight is probably the "weakest" of the Before Trilogy, it's by a very minuscule margin and I think it's a fitting closure to the story. |

Some of these may be repeats from other people's suggestions, but here are a few big favorites that might be a bit lesser known:

When I looked an hour ago, I saw your name on there. |

I enjoy this one a lot, though me being a DiCaprio fan probably has a lot to do with it. Just keep in mind that this is very much a Baz Luhrmann movie and try not to let yourself be put off by his soundtrack choices.

Yes, big fan of both of these!
Okay, so there are quite a few big name films from the decade I haven't seen. I do not intend to watch all of them, but if you had to pick 3-5 from the following list as essential, what would they be? Films with a * are already of interest to me. Films with a ^ are not of interest--convince me.
HELP ME!
(Keep in mind that I haven't seen a lot of the movies on your list.) These are my five favorite movies from your list: Age of Adaline The Greatest Showman Crazy Rich Asians The Descendants A Star is Born These are the five most essential movies from your list: Nightcrawler Manchester by the Sea Bridge of Spies Birdman The Social Network |
Speaking of recommendations. Even if they don't make your lists, here's to few movies that I hope people give a look.

It was very good, btw. Not sure it will make my ballot, but I may consider it.
Have you seen the follow up, Transit? For some reason I saw them in the reverse order, and seeing some questions posed explicitly in Transit made the implicit questions raised in Phoenix feel stronger when I finally got around to it. |

Here are the Palme D'Or nominations of 2010-2019, in case anyone's curious.
Palme D'Or 2010 Palme D'Or 2011 Palme D'Or 2012 Palme D'Or 2013 Palme D'Or 2014 Palme D'Or 2015 Palme D'Or 2016 Palme D'Or 2017 Palme D'Or 2018 Palme D'Or 2019 |
To continue with my "left field" recommendations; films that might or not make my ballot in the end, but that I'd like to put a spotligh ton. It's time for 2011...
Margin Call - Tight script, solid performances, very "energetic" for what is essentially a "talky" film. Another Earth - Interesting scifi drama from Brit Marling. Well acted and thought-provoking, even if the science in it doesn't make sense. Solid pairing with Melancholia, also from this year. Sound of My Voice - Speaking of Brit Marling, here's another interesting film of her about a couple that tries to infiltrate a mysterious cult led by Marling. It might not be perfect, but it's the kind of film that sticks with you. Attack the Block - Pretty cool scifi action/thriller about savage aliens attacking the "block" in UK, as a gang of teens tries to take them on. Killer Joe - Starts as a conventional dark humored drama about a couple of dumb rednecks putting a hit on a family member, but ends up with a weirdly bizarre climax that makes the journey worthy. McCounaghey is great here. |

I've seen about half of this long list. Out of them, sorry to say, there are not many worth paying attention. Actually, I think there are four of all these movies that I think deserve being in top 100 of the 2010's. |
