If you don’t live in an insane asylum, then you probably love Shane Black‘s directorial debut, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. The screenwriter behind Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and The Last Boy Scout made a clever, hilarious, and character-driven mystery with his first outing behind the camera. The film didn’t make a ton of money at the box-office, but there’s a lot of love out there for it. With Black’s next picture, he’s somewhat returning to the dynamic and world we saw in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.

After the jump, read Black’s comments on his upcoming movie, The Nice Guys.

I say The Nice Guys “somewhat” resembles what we saw in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang because the Warner Bros.’ project is its own kind of noir film. We haven’t quite seen a script like this from Black before, although it does share similarities to his past work. The Nice Guys takes everything you love — or hate, if you’re not a fan — about Black’s writing and puts a new spin on it, presenting certain tropes and familiar characters on a bigger, rougher, and funnier canvas.
Here’s what the director had to tell People Magazine about the film:
“It is an R-rated film and it’s a caper…It’s a little fast, a little funny and a little rough in places, kind of coarse. These guys are working-class dudes, they’re not really sophisticated private detectives, so it’s a chance to do the kind of thriller I don’t see too much of anymore. Whether this thing is a comedy with action or a thriller with jokes, one thing that’s very clear is these two are extremely funny. People will enjoy seeing the two of them.”
The Nice Guys First Look

And here’s the full image of Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling together, playing an odd couple teaming up to uncover a mystery:

Both characters don’t have the greatest sense of style, especially Russell Crowe’s Jackson Healy, but, since this is Crowe and Ryan Gosling we’re looking at, of course they manage to look pretty damn cool in their 1970s’ attire. I’m mostly excited to see what type of chemistry the two actors have. Both characters are equally hilarious and, in their own ways, skilled. It’s a great, funny two-hander, and like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, the script isn’t all jokes and gags. There’s some heart, tension, and drama in The Nice Guys, which plays along nicely with the laughs. Even if the film is only half as good as script, it’ll still be a pretty good movie.
After this The Nice Guys first look, I imagine we’ll see a trailer for the film sometime soon.
The Nice Guys opens in theaters May 20th, 2016.

I saw the trailer for this the other day and it looks more comedy than mystery. It looks like it'll be decent, but I'm not a fan of Gosling. I am a fan of Crowe and will go see it, but he's made some pretty crappy movies recently (Noah, Winter's Tale, The Man With the Iron Fist) so my expectations aren't too high.

The red band trailer is better, with the cussin' and whatnot. "Sweetheart, how many times have I told you? Don't say, 'and stuff'. Just say, 'Dad, there are whores here.'"

This is Shane Black returning to the similar kind of genre material with a darkly comic and cheeky take on it that he did so gloriously in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005). This may be my most happily anticipated movie of 2016. Bar none.

The red band trailer does look more interesting than the other. Should be fun, though I'd see it even if it looked awful.

This movie looks really funny. I hope it is a bit more serious than the trailers show though.

Ehhhh, I'm still going to make the effort to see it in theatres, but neither of the trailers have seriously won me over. Of course, they're still trailers, but I re-watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang recently and it felt way too dry for such a supposedly irreverent movie. Hopefully The Nice Guys does better.

These are seriously my two favorite trailers of the last three or four years. I want to see this movie NOW! Gosling is hysterical.

I get the same vibe that I get from the trailers for Inherent Vice, where I'm definitely intrigued enough by the wacked-out '70s detective angle and got some sense of amusement from the proceedings involving a goofy lead actor, but I can't remember the last time I found anyone in any trailer to be anything approaching "hysterical".

I can't express how much I love smoking in movies. No clue why. Only when they inhale, fake smoking ruins it for me. Commit to your art.
