Re: OLD TIME ROCK 'N ROLL TOURNAMENT
Come on MoFo's! This will be fun!
|
You know you're getting old when you see a song tournament for only classic rock songs allowed...and you think yes! this one is for me...then you find out 'classic' means the 1990s:p Just thought that was funny:)
Sounds like a good idea though:up: |
Re: OLD TIME ROCK 'N ROLL TOURNAMENT
I'll probably sign up for this, but I'm at work so I'll have to wait until lunch to post my noms.
|
I have no idea how a tournament works, and I hope I don't mess this up and I' ll try to catch on as we go along- but I could NOT resist joining in on this great topic. Just off the top of my head , here's my list:
Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan All Through the Night - Cyndi Lauper Material Girl - Madonna C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry or Emmylou Harris Against the Wind - Bob Seger Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood Layla - Slowhand (Eric Clapton and Derek and the Dominos) ) All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix Mr. Soul - Buffalo Springfield White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane Walk This Way - Aerosmith Not really rock n roll but it's great: Back in the Day -Ahmad You probably never heard of it but it's terrific : Apricot Brandy- Rhinocerous And last, mojo, but certainly NOT least - I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt (along with Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Etta James , Canned Heat , etc. etc.) |

However, you will need to hyperlink each song title to it's youtube link. Go to the song's youtube video, copy the link. Highlight the song title here, click on the hyperlink button, paste the Youtube link, change the www to m Let me know if you have any questions. |

16 songs is nothing. I could have made it 20 :) |

I do have a question. : HHHEEEEEELLLLLPPPP !!!!!!!!!! 😳 Ah phooey; I knew there was a catch to this. 😮. I mean I had no trouble picking out songs, I' m filled to the brim with songs. I could come up with another 16 songs in a nano second. But what's this you're saying about the hyperlink. And the m for www???? I don't want to alarm anyone here, but this may all be beyond the wall I usually hit in my abilities of cyber/techno deduction. I' m not even sure I could do this on my device- it doesn't seem to let me copy an entire link. Well maybe I could think about this overnight and see if there's a way I can manage it. In the meantime, I may wander over to the Star Trek TOS thread, get in the transformer, and see if there's a way I can get Mr. Spock to assist me in this. In the meantime- this looks like a great thread, mojo , which, even if I can't join in, I will surely be following from another planet. Beam me up Scottie :) |

it shows up when you hit "Advanced" for extra options. The link button as a sphere and a chain. When you click it, a box opens up to supply the "link" or web page address. It'll pop up in your reply. Part of that will be highlighted, in that highlighted section you type in the band and the song title. At the beginning of that web address, it will start with "www." That is where you replace it with "m". That replacement makes it appear as writing instead of the video itself. hope that helps. |

I forgot to say thanks to you @edarsenal for your input, which unfortunately glided like A High Flying Bird that was Eight Miles High over me. But perhaps Stirchley will be able to use this knowledge Today or in Days of Future Passed , or even next week on Monday Monday ( I can stop any time. Really. )
Fortunately @mojofilter gave a big Help to me so I can join right in and get some Satisfaction out of this terrific thread. Also I Thank You and send a hug to @Citizen Rules who never fails to Stand By Me with his enthusiasm and tireless support. With mofos like you all around , who are Here,There and Everywhere - how can I help but be Happy? ( Okay I' m done now. :) Whew glad to get that out of my system ) |

Sniff ‘n the Tears Driver’s Seat
Okay, I got the hang of it now. (Several hours later & I’m not even in the tournament.) :D Will not hi-jack the thread any longer. |
ROUND 1 DAY 1 Favorite song round 1: Doobie Brothers -What A Fool Believes (it's almost cheating mojo :D) https://i.imgur.com/ySyb63k.jpg Randy Meisner - Hearts On Fire VS. Sniff "N" the Tears-Driver's Seat The Beatles - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds VS. Ritchie Valens - Sleepwalk Cream - White Room VS. April Wine - Roller All Through the Night - Cyndi Lauper VS. ROUND 1 DAY 1
Randy Meisner - Hearts On Fire VS. Sniff "N" the Tears-Driver's Seat Not crazy about either of these. The Beatles - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds VS. Ritchie Valens - Sleepwalk Love Sleepwalk and I'm not a big Beatles fan Cream - White Room VS. April Wine - Roller No contest. All Through the Night - Cyndi Lauper VS. Tommy Tutone - 867-5309/Jenny Not crazy about either. Joe Walsh - Life's Been Good VS. Ambrosia - How much I feel Lynyrd Skynyrd - Saturday Night Special VS. Johnny Rivers - Rockin' Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu That Johnny Rivers song is great but I'm gonna give it to my own nom. Wish these two were up against some of the lesser songs in this round. Mr. Soul - Buffalo Springfield VS.The Kinks-Celluloid Heroes The Traveling Wilburys - End of the Line VS. The Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes I like the Doobies but they're no match for Petty, Orbison, Dylan, Harrison, and Lynne. |

Randy Meisner - Hearts On Fire VS. Sniff "N" the Tears-Driver's Seat
I don't recall hearing the first before. It was corny but I enjoyed the vibe of the song and the video. I've loved Driver's Seat since first seeing one of my favorite movies- https://youtu.be/Mpo_BO5vFII The Beatles - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds VS. Ritchie Valens - Sleepwalk The second was nice but an average Beatles song is a great song. Cream - White Room VS. April Wine - Roller Not my favorite from Cream even if it's still awesome. For this one match, I enjoyed the other a little more this time. All Through the Night - Cyndi Lauper VS.Tommy Tutone - 867-5309/Jenny I rarely vote for Lauper, but that's not a song I've heard much and I liked it. I like Jenny but more as sort of a joke than as a good song. Joe Walsh - Life's Been Good VS. Ambrosia - How much I feel Nothing bad here but it was a mismatch. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Saturday Night Special VS. Johnny Rivers - Rockin' Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu Brutal match between 2 favorites that I've nominated myself in the past. Mr. Soul - Buffalo Springfield VS. Celluloid Heroes Mr Soul is another that I love and have nominated before. The Traveling Wilburys - End of the Line VS. The Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes I didn't like either of these when they first came out but they've both grown on me over the years. One of them much more so though. Getting SC's votes- |
Great songs to pick from and I' m really enjoying listening to them. Okay I' m just getting the hang of this and I still don't know how to bold the letters for my choices on this thing. So I am just going to list the winner first, the song of my choice will be ALL IN CAPS and the ' loser ' second, in parenthesis, in no caps. I hope that's ok.
1- Sniif N the Tears. DRIVER'S SEAT (Randy meisner - hearts on fire) 2- Ritchie Valens SLEEPWALK omg never thought I'd find a song to beat out the Beatles but Good Lawd - soooooo sexy, Jest hold me close and let's dance real slow :) (the Beatles - l.s.d.) 3-Cream -WHITE ROOM - iconic (april wine- roller) 4- Cyndi Lauper - ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT (tommy tutone - jenny) 5- Ambrosia HOW MUCH I FEEL (joe Walsh - life 's been good) 6- Johnny Rivers - ROCKING PNEUMONIA AND THE BOOGIE WOOGIE FLU ( lynnard skynard - Saturday night special) 7- Buffalo Springfield - MR. SOUL (kinks - celluloid heroes) 8 - The Traveling Wilburys - END OF THE LINE - I like the other song too - but this is how it's done, boys. What a driving rocking beat, what a happy circle of song. (doobie brothers - what a fool believes ) |
ROUND 1 DAY 1 Randy Meisner - Hearts On Fire VS. Sniff "N" the Tears-Driver's Seat I just recently discovered the first song after I dove deep into the Eagles and their solo work, and I instantly loved this tune. Don Felder has his own version of the song which is equally as great The Beatles - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds VS. Ritchie Valens - Sleepwalk Beatlemaniac here, so this is a natural choice Cream - White Room VS. April Wine - Roller Two kickass tunes. This was not an easy choice All Through the Night - Cyndi Lauper VS. Tommy Tutone - 867-5309/Jenny I've grown tired of Jenny and her damn phone number. Lauper ain't rock 'n roll but she'll do for now Joe Walsh - Life's Been Good VS. Ambrosia - How much I feel Joe Walsh is a cool mother f**ker, and that tune of his is pure rock 'n roll. Ambrosia is kickass too. Tough choice. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Saturday Night Special VS. Johnny Rivers - Rockin' Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu Another tough match. This tourney obviously will not be an easy one overall. The second got me moving the minute I played it Mr. Soul - Buffalo Springfield VS.The Kinks-Celluloid Heroes Both are great. I like Celluloid heroes more, that's all The Traveling Wilburys - End of the Line VS. The Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes I've always loved that Wilburys' tune, but it's going up against a song I've loved more as I've grown older. Something about Michael McDonald's voice that does it for me |
Re: OLD TIME ROCK 'N ROLL TOURNAMENT
I will not post a winners list for each round/day just to save time. Losers will be deleted from the ELIMINATION LIST I've created on the first page. If your song has disappeared from the list, it means the other song in the match won :)

ROUND 1 DAY 2
http://24.media.tumblr.com/7c6a146c6...qzl4o1_500.gif Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie |
ROUND 2 DAY 2 Favorite songs round 2: Chuck Berry - C'est La Vie, Phil Collins - Easy Lover, Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You https://media1.giphy.com/media/YIGrctMMKWf96/giphy.gif Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt Chuck Berry - C'est La Vie (You Never Can Tell) VS.
ROUND 2 DAY 2
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love Astley is pop. Led Zep are rock. Easy choice Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn Tough match The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt Not sure what the second song was, but the first was cool number Chuck Berry - C'est La Vie (You Never Can Tell) VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun I prefer the Animals' version of Rising Sun. Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning Two kickass tunes, but I have soft spot for the Mac The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover I love Phil, but his song is more pop. In The City has recently become one of my top favorite Eagles songs R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime I love REM, but that Journey track or tracks have recently become my favorite song of theirs. Straight out and gritty 70's rock 'n roll Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie Louie Louie is awesome, but KISS wins this easily |
ROUND 1 DAY 2
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love I actually liked the first when it came out. I must have been going through an awkward phase. Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn I have always liked the first more. The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt Respect for Raitt, but I just like The Guess Who more. C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun I love that psychedelic version. Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning Close match; I like both. The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover Easy call, but I don't dislike the second. R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime There couldn't be a bigger blowout. I dislike R.E.M. and the other is one of my biggest favorites. I nominated it a couple times before; maybe that's when you got into it Mojo? Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie Toughest call of the round, and the reasons why are not suitable for most adults to hear. |

ROUND 1 DAY 2
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt Not crazy about either one, but I'm voting for The Guess Who on principle, since that Bonnie Raitt song is from 2000. C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun I'd have voted the other way if it had been The Animals. Not digging the Frijid Pink vocal. Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS.
Round 1 Day 2
This round had some songs I wasn't too familiar with, which made it fun to explore but a little harder to choose. Sometimes felt I could do more justice to a song if I'd heard it a few times more. But I just went with a first instinct- and here goes. And btw I' m not sure I should post so many comments - got carried away here; in the future I can try to be less......verbose ;) 1- Led Zeppelin WHOLE LOTTA LOVE ( Rick astly - never gonna give you up) 2- The Byrds - TURN TURN TURN (dion - runaround sue) 3- Bonnie Raitt -I GOT MY MOJO WORKING ( guess who- albert flasher) Miss Vicky said the song was from 2000, though I' m pretty sure Bonnie has performed this for years earlier. Anyway, Bonnie's one of my all time favorites and I love the song too. I would have substituted Muddy Waters great version, if I knew about the date - too late now tho) 4- Chuck Berry C'EST LA VIE (YOU NEVER CAN TELL) - a happy love story that puts a smile on my face and makes my feet want to dance. ( frijid pink - house of the rising sun) 5-Humble Pie - I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR - I've heard versions I've liked better than this live one, including one by Ray Charles - but I' m giving it the nod for the song) (fleetwood mac - Monday morning) 6-didn't know either song , slight edge to The Eagles - IN THE CITY ( phil collins - easy lover) 7- didn't know either song here but the REM song was strangely intriguing R.E.M. DRIVE (journey - feeling that way/anytime) 8- You know I am not familiar with the work of KIss. So I was pleasantly surprised that I really got into their song. May have picked it in a different match up. But here's the thing: in every generation there comes along a song so loud and raucous and meaningless it makes parents worldwide just cringe and cry out "You call THAT music???" And man, is this song loud and meaningless . I mean I can' t even make out the words , can you? But hey, it's got a good beat ( and a good riff) and ya can dance to it- so jmho : THAT'S rock and roll. 8- The Kingsman - LOUIE LOUIE ( kiss - I was made for loving you) |
ROUND 1 DAY 2
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love Been a Zeppelin fan since childhood since I listened to their first album that my eldest sister won at a carnival back in the mid 70s. Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn One of SOOOO many tough choices The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt Gotta lotta love for the first one and prefer Muddy's version of the second though Bonnie does it honor C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun I really love both of these - very VERY tough choice Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning this is one of Mac's I do enjoy but oh how I love me some Pie The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover never liked Collins and always loved Eagles R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime The really early Journey songs are the ones I like and this is one of them Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie belonged to the KISS Army as a tot, but I have to go with The Kingsmen |
ROUND 1 DAY 3
https://68.media.tumblr.com/4df336cb...enz8o1_500.gif Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros Queen - Killer Queen VS. Sexy Celebrity
Round 1, Day 3 1. Sister Christian 2. Run Through the Jungle 3. Steve Winwood 4. Forget Me Nots 5. My City Was Gone 6. Separate Ways 7. Roll on Down the Highway 8. Positively Fourth Street |
ROUND 1 DAY 3
Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros The second is good funky music though. Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle However that is one of my favorite Queen songs. Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood But I have grown to like Steve Winwood more as I've gotten older. Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots One of my favorites. John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone Never cared much for The Pretenders. Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better Not one of my favorites from either band. B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter Boy do I love to listen to that loud. Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan One of my favorites from Dylan. |
ROUND 1 DAY 3
Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros I don't think I've heard that second one before. It's good but I tend not to favor instrumentals. Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle Both great songs, but CCR gets the edge. Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood I used to listen to Hendrix a lot, but don't really anymore for some reason. Great stuff. Never been overly impressed with Winwood, even when I saw him in concert (he toured with Eric Clapton). Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots Both great songs, but I don't think "Forget Me Nots" qualifies as Rock N Roll. Even if it does, it's no match for the energy of "Turn Me Loose." John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone I typically don't like female singing voices, but Chrissie Hynde is an exception. Also didn't care for "Naughty Naughty" at all. Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better I've never been big on The Beatles and "Getting Better" just doesn't do anything for me. Love the Journey song. B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter Nothing against Bachman Turner Overdrive and I'm sure they'll win this match easily, but one of these songs is by my favorite living musician and the other one isn't. Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan That's a good Dylan song but - as much as I'd like to give my vote to one of the few surviving Wilburys - I like the McCartney song better. |
ROUND 1 DAY 3
Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros Going with Apricot Brandy. Great riff Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle Disgustingly hard call, but. . . Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood I'm going to say it: Scuse me while I kiss the sky Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots Not too crazy about either, but in the end, if I have to choose John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone same goes with this one Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better These are actually pretty close, but having to choose. . . B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter Definitely go with BTO Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan A helluva of a relatively unknown gem by Paul |
ROUND 1 DAY 3
Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros I've grown kinda tired of Sister Christian, but it's still the better of the two rockers in this match. The second was pretty cool. Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle Tough match! I'm going with CCR Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood Another tough one. I'll go with Purple Haze because it's possibly my favorite Hendrix song Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots I like the second one, but I don't consider it a rock song. The first is badass John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone Pretenders have far better songs than that filler track. I really like Naughty Naughty. Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better Tough one! I'm going with Getting Better because it's recently become one of my favorite Beatles songs B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter Never was a fan of Lindsay Buckingham as a solo artist, and that song did not help. The first was a cool rocker Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan Dylan has plenty of great songs but that is not one of my favorites. I love Junior Farm. |
Round 1 Day 3
Good round, with three of my original picks in here. I was interested to see if I would still prefer my own songs ( spoiler , yes I did :) ) 1- Rhinocerous - APRICOT BRANDY (night ranger -sister christian) 2- Creedence Clearwater Revival -RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE (queen -killer queen) 3- Steve Winwood - BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE AGAIN (jimi Hendrix - purple rain) Looked like a tough choice; great Hendrix song ; even tho I nominated High Life. But once I listened to both, I just knew Back in the High Life was the one I wanted to listen to over and over again - great lyrics, melding perfectly with the tight instrumental back up , great melody, great voice, and nice theme too. 4- Patrice Rushen - FORGET ME NOTS (loverboy- turn me loose) 5- The Pretenders - MY CITY WAS GONE (john parr - naughty naughty ) a toss up really , went by my mood of the day, could be different tomorrow) 6- The Beatles -GETTING BETTER ( journey- separate ways) 7- Lyndsey Buckingham -SOUL DRIFTER (b.t.o. roll on down the highway) Not an easy choice here either, and wasn't so wild about the lyrics in Soul Drifter, plus it was more pop than rock. But the whole song just had such a nice feel to it. 8-BOB DYLAN - POSITIVELY FOURTH STREET Admiiting my bias here, but for me there is no one else better than Dylan. No one even exists . And is there any other musical style except rock to bring it on home in song, when someone throws mud and manure in your face? Haven't heard anyone else who has ever said it better when facing down a personal betrayal. "I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes" .....and onward .... to the punchline Lmao. |
Re: OLD TIME ROCK 'N ROLL TOURNAMENT
Waiting on @John-Connor to vote on DAY 3

ROUND 1 DAY 3
Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan |

Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road |
ROUND 1 DAY 4
Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) I really like the music of "Hey Hey, My My," but I just don't like Neil Young's voice. Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones I'm not a Stones fan, but that's one of their better songs and the Spirit one just wasn't doing it for me. Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready Easy choice since the first one isn't Rock N Roll. Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know "Rock Candy" is good, but it's not Tom Petty. Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom Sweet Freedom is okay, but sounds more pop to me. Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard I didn't even know Richards had solo music and now that I know I'd like to forget again. Terrible voice. John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley "Hold On" is pretty, but I've loved "Creeque Alley" for many years. Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road I like the music of Tobacco Road, but not the voices. Huey is fun. |

ROUND 1 DAY 4
Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) They don't call him The Godfather of Grunge for nothing. Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones Two of my biggest favorites. I'll go with the first since it's my nom and likely to get rolled anyway. Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready I nominated the second, but then SC told me Ed already beat me to it. Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know Liked the first but one of my favorites from Petty. Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom Was never a big fan of either, but at least I'm not sick of the second. Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard Believe it or not, since we last did this, I've even grown to like Africa. John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley Wasn't crazy about the first. Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road Close match. |
ROUND 1 DAY 4
Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) The first one was not my thing. I've always loved that song by Neil Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones I do not like the devil, but I sure like this song Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready The first one should not be in this tourney Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know Easy choice here. Tom Petty is a rock giant. Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom I love the 2nd song, it's my favorite Michael McDonald song, but it's more pop. The first one is a rock classic Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard Tough match! Hold the Line is a real stomper, and the second is Keith being a complete badass without Mick at his side. He actually wrote that song for the Rolling Stones, but due to a fallout with Mick at the time, he ended up doing a solo album and sang the song himself. John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley John Lennon's personal songs, which are a vast majority of his solo work, are pure gold. Hold On is probably my favorite song of his. The second did not do anything for me Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road You can't beat Huey Lewis that easily |
Round 1 Day 4
Drat!!! my posts have been erased twice today just as I tried to post them. Don't t know why. So I' m only going ( to try to ) post only my picks, with no commentary . 1-Neil Young HEY HEY MY MY 2- The Rolling Stones - SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL 3- Ahmad - BACK IN THE DAY 4- Tom Petty - I NEED TO KNOW 5- Michael McDonald SWEET FREEDOM 6- Keith Richards - TAKE IT SO HARD 7- John Lennon - HOLD ON 8- Huey Lewis - THE POWER OF LOVE |
ROUND 1 DAY 4
Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) VERY close, but in the end. . . Diamond Ring is SOOO d@mn catchy Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones Another hard call and eventually went with Spirit Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready VERY easy choice! What is rock, one isn't Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know Not a lot of Petty I like, though this is in that limited number I gotta go with Rock Candy with that solid riff Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom Enjoy McDonald's voice but Norm's Spirit in the Sky works more for me Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard One of the few Toto I actually like John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley surprisingly, being a fan of Lennon, I prefer this song by The Mamas and the Papas Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road One rocks the other is a pop attempt at rocking, in my eyes |

ROUND 1 DAY 5
Robert Tepper - No Easy Way Out VS. The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday I don't generally like The Monkees, but this was pretty good. Black Sabbath-N.I.B. VS. ZZ Top - La Grange A haw, haw, haw, haw, a haw... A haw, haw, haw. Never been a Sabbath fan and La Grange is an ear worm. Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back In Town VS. Head East - Never Been Any Reason Boys Are Back In Town is a classic. The other one's okay though. Ram Jam - Black Betty VS. Material Girl - Madonna One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong... Rick Springfield - Jessie’s Girl VS. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Indian Reservation I like "Jessie's Girl," but I'm kind of tired of it. Elvis Presley - Burning Love VS. Joe Cocker - Feelin' Alright Joe Cocker's great but he doesn't measure up to The King. Whitesnake - Is This Love VS. Steely Dan - My Old School Both good, but "Is This Love" is one of my favorite songs. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane VS. Lynyrd Skynyrd-Needle and the Spoon Tough call, but I like "White Rabbit" a little more. |
ROUND 1 DAY 4
Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. ROUND 1 DAY 5
Robert Tepper - No Easy Way Out VS. The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday I don't like The Monkees. The Tepper song has always been one of my favorites. Black Sabbath-N.I.B. VS. ZZ Top - La Grange ZZ Top, FTW! Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back In Town VS. Head East - Never Been Any Reason The second song sound cool but not as cool as Boys Ram Jam - Black Betty VS. Material Girl - Madonna Madonna does not belong in this tourney. Black Betty is easily one of the catchiest rock songs ever written. Rick Springfield - Jessie’s Girl VS. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Indian Reservation Paul Revere wishes he had Jessie's Girl too Elvis Presley - Burning Love VS. Joe Cocker - Feelin' Alright Elvis Shmelvis. Joe Cocker brings down the house with that tune Whitesnake - Is This Love VS. Steely Dan - My Old School Steely Dan is one of those bands I could never get into for some odd reason. Is This Love is one of the biggest 80's rock songs White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane VS. Lynyrd Skynyrd-Needle and the Spoon White Rabbit is a classic, no doubt. But I just think Lynyrd know how to rock way more than Jefferson |
Re: OLD TIME ROCK 'N ROLL TOURNAMENT
Excuse me for introducing math into this thread which btw has never been one of my favorite subjects or accomplishments- but isn't this still Day 4???
Can I post day 5 tomorrow? Do we get bonus points for posting the 4 + 5 rounds today? Or a day off tomorrow? |

ROUND 1 DAY 5
Guess I'll post this now, twice in day. Don't get me wrong; I love music. But if we have to post 3 in a day I' m taking the next Midnight Train to Georgia . 1- The Monkees - PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY - (robert tepper- no easy way out) Monkees are more pop than rock, but the Sunday song is catchy. 2- Z Z Top - LA GRANGE ( black sabbath - n I b) No contest here- ZZ rocks the top off the roof with this one. And besides, I think one of the guys on the album cover is David Letterman :) 3- Head East - NEVER BEEN ANY REASON ( thin lizzy - boys are back in town) I've just heard that' boys are back' song one too many times. Maybe if they went away for awhile and came back later? 4- Madonna - MATERIAL GIRL ( ram jam - black betty) Whoa that ram jam song was a good one. Both songs imho are keepers . But I still have to give the nod to M Girl - it's bright it's sassy it's a classic. 5- - Paul Revere and the Raiders - INDIAN RESERVATION ( Rick Springfield - jesse's girl) Both more pop than rock and Jesse 's Girl may even be the better song. But that was another one I liked only for the first 5000 times I heard it. 6-Joe Cocker - FEELING ALRIGHT ( elvis - burning love) 7- Steely Dan - MY OLD SCHOOL ( whitesnake - is this love?) 8- Jefferson Airplane - WHITE RABBIT ( lynyrd skynyrd - needle and the spoon) White Rabbit just blows you out of the water- or the rabbit hole, Eerie and mesmerizing wirh a powerful resolution Btw @mojofilter, that was a nice pairing on Rabbit and Needle. I notice that a lot of these song - couples are linked by a similar theme. I don' t know how you sift through all these songs to match them up like this-but it's pretty cool. |
ROUND 1 DAY 5
Robert Tepper - No Easy Way Out VS. The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday I think they're both mediocre and fun at the same time. Black Sabbath-N.I.B. VS. ZZ Top - La Grange I love La Grange, and it still wasn't close. Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back In Town VS. Head East - Never Been Any Reason One of my favorites. Ram Jam - Black Betty VS. Material Girl - Madonna Easy, Madonna isn't rock anyway. Rick Springfield - Jessie’s Girl VS. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Indian Reservation Close match as I quite like both. Elvis Presley - Burning Love VS. Joe Cocker - Feelin' Alright My favorite Elvis song. Whitesnake - Is This Love VS. Steely Dan - My Old School Fairly simple even though I do like the first. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane VS. Lynyrd Skynyrd-Needle and the Spoon Love both! |

Round 1, Day 6 1. Bob Dylan 2. Pour Some Sugar On Me 3. John Mellencamp 4. Brother Louie 5. Dancing in the Dark 6. Van Morrison 7. Stone Temple Pilots 8. Hurdy Gurdy Man BEYOND RIGGED! |
ROUND 1 DAY 6
Warren Zevon - Desperadoes Under the Eaves VS. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Dylan's a legendary songwriter, but I prefer Zevon. He's also got the better voice. Rolling Stones-Heart of Stone VS. Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me This one's just more fun. Three Dog Night-The Show Must Go On VS. John Mellencamp - Ain't Even Done With The Night Easy choice. I don't like Mellencamp and I love that TDN song. Eagles - One Of These Nights VS. Stories - Brother Louie Man, come on. I had a rough night and I hate the ****in' Eagles, man. All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix VS. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark There are only two Springsteen songs that I like and "Dancing in the Dark" is not one of them. Jethro Tull-Hymn 43 VS. Van Morrison - Wild Night Not overly fond of either. Bob Seger - We've Got Tonight VS. Stone Temple Pilots - Plush I like STP a lot and considered nominating them myself, but they just don't compare to Seger. Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man VS. Layla - Derek and the Dominoes This match sucks. I really love both of these. Donovan wins it for me only because it's my nomination. |
ROUND 1 DAY 6
Warren Zevon - Desperadoes Under the Eaves VS. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan I didn't like the first one. Dylan's Rolling Stone is a rock masterpiece Rolling Stones-Heart of Stone VS. Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me Tough match! I went with the catchier tune Three Dog Night-The Show Must Go On VS. John Mellencamp - Ain't Even Done With The Night I just couldn't get into Three Dog Night. Mellencamp is cool Eagles - One Of These Nights VS. Stories - Brother Louie This is probably my all-time favorite Eagles song All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix VS. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark Tough match! I would normally give that Jimi cover version my vote, but I'll give it to Bruce this time Jethro Tull-Hymn 43 VS. Van Morrison - Wild Night Wild Night is a kickass song. I also like Mellencamp's version of that song. Bob Seger - We've Got Tonight VS. Stone Temple Pilots - Plush Another tough match! I'm going with Seger Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man VS. Layla - Derek and the Dominoes Layla is easily a better song than Hurdy Gurdy |

Warren Zevon - Desperadoes Under the Eaves VS. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Dylan takes it Rolling Stones-Heart of Stone VS. Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me A little surprised I'm doing this but I'm actually going with Leppard Three Dog Night-The Show Must Go On VS. John Mellencamp - Ain't Even Done With The Night Not a fan of Mellencamp and this is a great TDN song I haven't heard in too long a time Eagles - One Of These Nights VS. Stories - Brother Louie One of those impossible choices All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix VS. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark Another older Springsteen song could have swayed me Jethro Tull-Hymn 43 VS. Van Morrison - Wild Night Always got a kick out of Ian Anderson's style of performing and this is a great song but I'm a bit bias Bob Seger - We've Got Tonight VS. Stone Temple Pilots - Plush Fanboy of both and while I do prefer Plus, I'm going to go with the theme of Classic Rock Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man VS. Layla - Derek and the Dominos |
ROUND 1 DAY 6
Got 'erased ' again so I' m just going to try to post the winners and a few comments. Maybe this device doesn't like my long posts so early in the day :( 1- Dylan LIKE A ROLLING STONE Like I said, for me; when it comes to Dylan no one else exists. One of his best, and one of the greatest songs in rock. Still hear it done in local clubs, concerts and taverns - and you can bet the whole audience sings along. 2-Rolling Stones - HEART OF STONE 3- John Mellancamp - AIN'T EVEN DONE WITH THE NIGHT 4- Eagles - ONE OF THESE NIGHTS 5-Jimi Hendrix -ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER Dancing is a catchy one, but you know, on that video it looks to me like Bruce dances like Ed Norton. Besides, no match for Hendrix 's searing guitar and the mysterious and powerful song by Dylan. 6- Van Morrison - WILD NIGHT 7- Bob Seger - WE'VE GOT TONIGHT 8- Derek and the Dominoes - LAYLA - Sorry this had to be paired with Donovan as I' m a fan of his music. But Layla is another one of the greatest rock songs - achingly beautiful - and Slowhand is one of the best guitarists in the world. It all comes together in this one. |
Warren Zevon - Desperadoes Under the Eaves VS. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Have always loved that song. Rolling Stones-Heart of Stone VS. Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me Sugar is ok but this is no contest for me. Three Dog Night-The Show Must Go On VS. John Mellencamp - Ain't Even Done With The Night But I do love some Mellencamp. Eagles - One Of These Nights VS. Stories - Brother Louie That's one of my favorite songs by The Eagles, and I f***in' love The f***in' Eagles man. All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix VS. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark A little over played but I never got into the other. Jethro Tull-Hymn 43 VS. Van Morrison - Wild Night Love Tull and I never got into Morrison's solo stuff. Bob Seger - We've Got Tonight VS. Stone Temple Pilots - Plush Seger rules but not in this match. Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man VS. Layla - Derek and the Dominos Love both but I think Layla won before. |

ROUND 1 DAY 7
Them-Here Comes the Night VS. Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands Classic song. The Who - Behind Blue Eyes VS. Walk This Way - Aerosmith I don't like The Who - except for this song. I love this song. Los Bravos-Black is Black VS. Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady Both are great, just feeling this one a little more right now. Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around VS. The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 I DESPISE Stevie Nicks. Her voice just straight up makes me angry. But Tom Petty is my all-time favorite and I don't care for the Pumpkins. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust VS. War - Low Rider Never was a Bowie fan. The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up VS. Against the Wind - Bob Seger Both great but Seger's a little greater. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Here Comes My Girl VS. The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There Tom Petty > Everyone Else Harry Nilsson - Jump Into The Fire VS. Crosby, Stills, and Nash-Southern Cross Not crazy about either. |

Round 1, Day 7 1. Styx 2. Behind Blue Eyes 3. Black is Black 4. Smashing Pumpkins, 1979 5. War - Low Rider 6. Start Me Up 7. I Saw Her Standing There 8. Southern Cross Hi everyone! |
ROUND 1 DAY 7
Them-Here Comes the Night VS. Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands I couldn't get into the first one. The second is a badass tune by Styx The Who - Behind Blue Eyes VS. Walk This Way - Aerosmith The Who ain't got nothing on Aerosmith here Los Bravos-Black is Black VS. Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady Never really liked Black is Black, and Foxy Lady still gets me going everytime I hear it Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around VS. The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 Tough match! But even the Pumpkins would agree they don't hold a candle to Stevie and Tom together David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust VS. War - Low Rider Surprisingly this was an easy choice for me. Low Rider is a song you hear a lot but don't quite know it's title or who sings it. I'm glad I've finally found that out The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up VS. Against the Wind - Bob Seger Really tough match! I have a soft spot for that Bob Seger song ever since I watched Forrest Gump so I went with it Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Here Comes My Girl VS. The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There Tom has better songs than Here Comes My Girl. The Beatles prevail Harry Nilsson - Jump Into The Fire VS. Crosby, Stills, and Nash-Southern Cross Another tough match! I love that CSN song. Possibly my favorite by them. But Jump Into The Fire is too hard to resist. Harry Nilsson's vocals and the music on this song are just badass |
Them-Here Comes the Night VS. Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands
Love both. The Who - Behind Blue Eyes VS. Walk This Way - Aerosmith Both great, but tired of both. Los Bravos-Black is Black VS. Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady Love both. Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around VS. The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 Tough call because that's one of my favorite duets. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust VS. War - Low Rider Primo Bowie. The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up VS. Against the Wind - Bob Seger Rare for me to go against The Stones. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Here Comes My Girl VS. The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There Tough call. Harry Nilsson - Jump Into The Fire VS. Crosby, Stills, and Nash-Southern Cross I also quite like the first. |
ROUND 1 DAY 7
Them-Here Comes the Night VS. Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands never heard of Them, gonna have to look into -- well, Them even though I went with classic Styx The Who - Behind Blue Eyes VS. Walk This Way - Aerosmith Walk This Way gets played to death, and enjoy Blue Eyes far more Los Bravos-Black is Black VS. Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady Close, but -- Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around VS. The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 not a Pumpkins fan David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust VS. War - Low Rider tough call The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up VS. Against the Wind - Bob Seger never cared for this Stones song Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Here Comes My Girl VS. The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There going with The Beatles Harry Nilsson - Jump Into The Fire VS. Crosby, Stills, and Nash-Southern Cross very few CSN songs I like and this is one of them |
I was going to join in but couldn't figure out how to link up to the videos but I'm following. There are so many good songs nominated but there is one that stands out for me. https://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=h...Fgiphy.gif&f=1

Re: OLD TIME ROCK 'N ROLL TOURNAMENT
ROUND 1 DAY 7
Although I really think this is day 6. Maybe even day 5???? So many choices, so little math. Will just put only my choices in, with a little commentary when I can. 1-Styx -TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS 2- Aerosmith - WALK THIS WAY Man, this was a tough one.
