Horror Movies
Okay, I'm just going to say it, sitting through a horror movie today is real torture.
Recent movies, like; SAW I-IV, Hostel I&II, and Turistas are all Hollywood grade snuf films. They have no suspense or context, just a group of interchangeable jackasses placed in dangerous situations, all the while just wanting them to shut the hell up and just try to escape the situation, but no, instead like in Turistas after having been robbed and stranded in Brazil, they decide to blindly follow someone they don't even know and even go swimming. The current belief is, the more gore and gut wrenching torture placed on screen adds up to more terror, not true, it just creates disgust and then boredom. |
Re: Horror Movies
Good for you.
However, not true, these films are following a formula, a winning formula. They never do too well on DVD however they make good friday night cinema viewing for the couples and such. Saw and Turistas are without doubt thrillers, is that not obvious? They're quick, easy to make, entertaining movies. If you want a good horror, then work hard and look :) I also feel that saying Hostel I & II are bad, is just outright rediculous. They are a perfect modern day adaptation of/tribute to 60's/70's exploitation splatter films. Go away, watch Blood Feast, Wizard Of Gore or anything from the early stages of George A Romero and you'll change your mind. Gore is great. As superficial as it may sound. Gore is almost like a whole new genre with the amount of satisfying content available to view and cringe and have fun at. |
Re: Horror Movies
I'll echo JR's sentiments above with the exception of his higher-than-mine regard for Hostel. Actually the first one was imaginative and even surprising but the gore/torture factors were over the top for my taste. By the second one the surprise was blown and the idea seemed to be to capitalize on the gore. It's base and not much more fun than a run of the mill porno IMHO.
Now, horror as a genre isn't dead. There are some good modern examples but again as JR says above, you have to look for them. One of our esteemed mods here (OG) runs a horror site/blog called Horror's Not Dead that I read quite a bit as it's insightful and hopeful for the genre. |
Re: Horror Movies
I hesitate to even post in this thread, you sort of strike me as someone who is just trying to stir something up. But hey! Here goes anyway.
I love Horror movies. And there are a ton of them. I have a lot of them that I really enjoy for various reasons but I'm not sure that any of them are award winning or anything. Are they supposed to be? If you are truly on a quest to find "good" horror movies you are first going to have to define what a "good" horror movie is to you. Because I'm telling ya, there's millions (seems like it anyway) to chose from. |
Re: Horror Movies
Classic horror is the way to go. Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Vincent Price . . . I despise the gore of today. Movies like Saw, Hostile, etc . . . I don't consider them horror films at all. Just trashy gore.
Go Gorgon! :p You'd have to see my "Top 3" thread, to get that! |
Re: Horror Movies
Some of them are just that, trashy, but makers like Eli Roth have such a passion for the old school flicks that just draws me in. I love it!
One thing I will say for this thread is aimed again at Filmfreak, If you want good horror, Go for some Clive Barker. God I love that guy! haha. |
Re: Horror Movies
I love gore films, and slasher films. Ive watched pretty much all types of horror, and I say MORE gore please. Back in the day of "friday 13th" and "Nightmare on elm street" some lunatic going around slicing and dicing people is just pure entertainment. There are lots of classic horror like "Psycho" which are just as brilliant now as they where back in the day.
Regards "Hostel, Saw and Paradise lost(which is pretty much Hostel)" They dont really have a story, its made for the gore. Which I love but there are allot of people dont. |
Re: Horror Movies
There are three main catorgorys of horror:
Gore: These ones are not realy that scary. They are just people in bad situations getting torutured. (eg. Hostel or Saw) Supense: Movies were there is not much gore but you are more scared about what is not there. eg. the main charicter might be running away from a serial killer in the woods and all of a sudden it all goes quit. The feeling you get there is pure suspense. Slasher: These ones have some kind of serial killer or villan going around trying to kill a certain group of people (normaly teens). They tend to have alot of gore but at the same time heaps of suspense. It is pretty much old school horror and IMO the best form of horror and by far the most scariest. (eg. Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) |
Re: Horror Movies
... I agree, I think. Current blockbuster-theater horror is crap, with a few exceptions. Cloverfield and I guess some people liked, The Mist, etc., etc.
Anyways, I'd like to see a return of characters like Chuky... http://www.wherehouse.com/amgcover/d...03284awnuk.jpg Freddy Kruger... http://www.wherehouse.com/amgcover/d...03375uwquh.jpg Jason... http://www.wherehouse.com/amgcover/d...63849to9ve.jpg Michael Myers... http://www.wherehouse.com/amgcover/d...160730pqhn.jpg And if this is Hollywood's answer to my query... http://www.wherehouse.com/amgcover/d...89861nfsae.jpg I am extremely disappointed. |
Re: Horror Movies
Actually, they ARE remaking Freddy and Jason as we speak. You will be seeing them again. But don't go in with high hopes. We all know the potential hazards of remakes.

Re: Horror Movies
I thought he meant that he wanted to see them return, as in sequels? I thought that way because he listed Halloween. They already remade Halloween, and what crap that was. I can handle sequels a hell of a lot more than I can remakes.
As I've said before, classic horror is where it is at. For me, anyway. I hate gore. Most of today's new horror is either that, or simply boring. |

Where's the script that's gonna' make this cheese whiz mask famous? A little foam padding, glistening goo, and proper lighting would make it scary as hell. http://www.halloweenasylum.com/Produ...zago-m1013.jpg What's the story for the mask? Uh, how about, he's from hell and some college kid accidentally let him out of the cellar where he was being kept by the professor of religion, who was secretly a satanic cult leader. The kid gets busted too many times boozing in his dorm room and has to do community service at the school to get off of housing probation and that's where he stumbles across the freak. Of course his love interest is staying late in the library connected to the building where she's studying, cause they're opposites, opposites in opposite love. I'd set it in the early 90's when there weren't a lot of cell phones and when the clothes were cooler than they are now. Might even choose to shoot it on VHS and dub it a few times to get that generational lose that seems to make horror movies better. Sound? Stereo with the occasional slip. |
Re: Horror Movies
So you want those that you listed, remade? OK, but Halloween was. I know, I know, Rob said it wasn't a remake, but he's just in denial.
P.S. Do you like Vincent Price films. How about Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, etc . . . |

Re: Horror Movies
I liked the new Halloween, it was better than the (dare I say it) original. There I said it.

No, no, no. Not remade. I want some more like those to be made. I just want some more freaks with anger issues attacking helpless masses of dumbasses. That's an effin' movie.
*Watch the answer be in this thread. OK, I think you answered my question by saying you don't like See No Evil. That looks about the same quality as Saw, and Hostile. |
Re: Horror Movies
Saw and Hostel are much better than See no Evil in my ever so humble opinion. :)
|
Re: Horror Movies
I don't like the horror movies with what I would call excessive gore and violence.
It just depends. Vampires bug me. The Blob does not. |

Re: Horror Movies
I love horror and gore in films just as ive already stated but it would be great if hollywood came up with new bad guys who cannot die, untill the end of the film so it leaves it open for sequels. Just like the Friday 13th series and Nightmare on elm street series.
It would also be awsome if they came up with new ideas of horror, there are lots already like "The Fog" "Tremers" "Dracula" if they could come up with newer things that would be better. |
