Just ordered these two because they are going for about £13 on Amazon at the moment, so including postage it comes to about the same price as they would be in the Barnes and Noble sale, so getting them now instead of waiting, plus they will get here faster via Amazon because Barnes and Noble take forever to ship to the UK.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
So, first of all, I noticed there were a couple of comments regarding cover art, and I'd just like to say that Vampyr has one of my all time favorite covers.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...jpg?1328128328 Anyway, here are my thoughts on the Criterion movies that I've seen so far. Dazed and Confused - It had some fun moments, but was clearly not meant for my demographic. I didn't find it to be particularly memorable. 4/10 Rosemary's Baby - I watched this for the first time before it became part of the collection, and was blown away. I already said this in another post, but I knew the ending to this film going into it and it still affected me, raising some serious goosebumps. 9/10 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - This was the first actual Criterion Collection DVD I bought, since it was the most widely distributed and I always like to get as many special features as possible. And it provided a great introduction for me. Some found it boring, but I was completely engrossed from the beginning. It even took me a while to figure out that little Benjamin Button was entirely CGI. 8.5/10 House - I first heard of this film while watching a review by The Angry Video Game Nerd, and wanted to see it ASAP but thought I would have a hard time finding it. I felt so lucky when I found it sitting there at Barnes and Noble. In fact, I believe this was the first Japanese B movie I ever watched, predating my views of Tokyo Gore Police or Mutant Girls Squad. 8/10 Jigoku - So far, this is my favorite of the Criterion films that I've seen, and it's easily one of my top three favorite Japanese horror films. Even though I'm not religious, the story affected me on an emotional level. For just a brief moment, it made me fear hell. And that's the highest compliment that I can give to a movie like this. 10/10 Vampyr - As much as I love the cover art, this is one of my least favorites of the collection. It has an interesting style and I can enjoy it for what it is, but it's not a great film by any means. The essay included in the DVD case even states that it's not great. I did love the story Carmilla, but that's not going to affect my score of the movie. 5/10 Equinox - Another film that isn't great, but the low budget special effects provide some decent eye candy, and the corny dialogue is entertaining. 5.5/10 Cronos - While I didn't find this to be as strong as Pan's Labyrinth or The Devil's Backbone, it was still a good story with some genuine thrills. 7/10 When Horror Came to Shochiku - Unfortunately, three of the movies included in this pack were boring and forgettable, but Goke was entertaining enough to make it worth buying for me. The story had me invested from the start, the special effects were dated but cool to look at, and the lines were overacted to hell. So, it was a solid B movie. My rating is for Goke alone. 7/10 I also recently bought Brazil and Naked Lunch, which I haven't watched yet but I'll be sure to share my thoughts on them here when I do. Man Bites Dog, The Blob, The Game, and The Vanishing are all films which I need to get as well, at least off the top of my head. |

I bought Badlands yesterday, too, during that sale. I've never seen it -- blind buy.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Gave into the Amazon criterion sale... Here's what I got
http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...jpg?1328128332 I was considering getting homicide but went with his more acclaimed work. & http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...jpg?1338504064 as usual both are blind buys, I need to start buying more of the films I already love. Once Persona gets a good edition for a decent price it's coming, but for now I still don't own my number 1 movie. Same with Eraserhead. |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
^ The original Insomnia is fantastic, hope you enjoy it. I think that's the first ever Criterion DVD I got when I was over in America, from a second hand shop. :)
I'm still waiting for my Criterions to come from America, takes some time to get to the UK, hurry hurry! I'm thinking of buying the following Blu-ray Criterions if still in the $19.99 price when I'm next online: Medium Cool Ministry of Fear - only $14.99 at the moment on Blu-ray Monsieur Verdoux |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
+ rep for the original Insomnia.

False. Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line are both amazing films.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
I find his masturbatory exercises to be quite exquisite.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
I wouldn't call them masturbatory exercises, but I guess my key problem with his films could lie in the fact that I simply don't share his intense love of nature. Yes, the images are great, but what's he saying? It's all style and whatever substance there is buried beneath all of it. For him, painting a pretty picture on screen comes first; for me, it's the ideas that are most important. We seem to have opposing sensibilities when it comes to film.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Days of Heaven is very easy to relate to. It's basically Biblical in its simplicity and power, but unlike The Tree of Life. It builds to that final half hour. Watch Days of Heaven again with the sound turned up. It won't be boring.

No doubt he has something to say, but I think he's too enamored with the images to really give those statements the proper focus they deserve.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Oh my god, they're releasing the entire series of Zatoichi in November.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Indeed huge releases, I don't think I'll ever be willing to buy that box set, but it looks dazzling. I didn't care for City Lights much but it was bound to come, artwork looks nice. Shocked to Frances ha but I would like to see it.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Frances Ha is indeed an interesting choice. I want to see it but might wait until the Criterion release, isn't it November that the next sale takes place?
I see it's a duel format release too. Have Criterion done that before or is this a new thing? http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...0_original.jpg |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
F Yes!!! The November announcement is fantastic! I can't wait to get that boxed set. And the dual format is new as of November, but it seems all future Criterion releases will be sold this way. Awesome!
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
I'll be posting my thoughts on The Thin Red Line criterion shortly, as well as Charade.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Oh man I just checked Criterions site, "The Uninvited" from 1944 is being released. This has never been released on DVD. I have been looking for it forever in DVD Format.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...0_original.jpg |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
^ You can pre-order that for $19.99 right now on Amazon, don't have to wait for the Criterion sale to get it for that price.
This has never been released on DVD.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
B&N sale is on…goodbye November paychecks
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Nearly forgot! cheers for the reminder again.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Ordered my first two, The Uninvited was one I wanted last time but since it was already $19.99 I was hoping it would go down to $14.99 in the next sale like Ministry of Fear did and it has. :)
So my first two Criterion sale orders are: http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...0_original.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...0_original.jpg |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Oh my poor November paychecks.
Picked up the Cassevetes Box Set on Blu ray and also grabbed Seconds and The Uninvited. Also pre-ordered the Zatoichi set as most stores won't stock it, so no additional 10% discount but at least I get free express shipping. I can't wait to get that. Will probably only pick up City Lights seeing as I have my wedding in just over a month! |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Nice buys there. :)
^ I'm trying to decide if I'm going to go with Seconds. I've got Seconds, and Autumn Sonata in my mind at the moment. |

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Every local B&N sold out of City Lights bahhhhh
I got: Pierre Etaix collection To Be or Not To Be I Married a Witch The Uninvited The Life of Oharu The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp Fanny and Alexander box Scenes from a Marriage Le Million Autumn Sonata |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
That's a nice haul! That Etaix set is really something.
I grabbed The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp today. With the 20% email coupon and my member discount, I got that for $15. I just can't resist a good deal! |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Well, nice to see this is getting a release. I'm going to pre-order this Criterion that's out in February when it's available somewhere. Was going to order from Criterion themselves as it's only $19.99 at the moment but they don't seem to ship to Britain... :( I hope it's the same price when Amazon sell it.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
^ Just found out Criterion are putting out a different edition of Blue is the Warmest Colour later on in the year so I will not be getting that Criterion, not buying it twice...
It will be arriving in a super barebones version first, with the boutique label already warning customers: "A full special edition treatment of this film will follow at a later date." That's why it's so cheap for a brand new release I guess... the special edition is rumoured to have the director's cut on it that will make the film about 40 minutes longer. It's already 179ish minutes long. |

I've always preferred to have films on their own unless a box set is something very special. I don't think the box set comes in Blu-ray format anyway?
I'm trying to decide if I'm going to get Derek Jarman's Jubilee. It usually goes for silly prices when out of the sale. I got about half way through the DVD years ago when I rented it but the disc was damaged and it wouldn't play anymore and they didn't have extra discs at the rental. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...4L._SY300_.jpg |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
My Zatoichi box set shipped from B&N yesterday. Looking forward to getting that!! Also picked up Tokyo Story this week.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Probably going to get that in July. Couldn't manage it this time. It looks lovely though.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
That is one gorgeous box set.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Decided to forget about the Jubilee DVD and decided to rent it instead, the new rental company I've gone with have it on DVD.
So the next one I got was the Criterion edition of Wings and The Ascent: http://img2.imagesbn.com/p/715515030...2_s260x420.jpg |

IT'S STARTED! :D
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Well, made my first order from the 50% off sale. Wanted to upgrade from the Criterion DVD that I bought second hand years ago, love this film(over $30 on Amazon right now!):
http://img2.imagesbn.com/p/715515114...3_s260x420.JPG There are two more I definitely would like so will order those tomorrow. |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
We're not saving that much are we? Would be about 5 bux each wouldn't it?
You can get most of them for like 25 bux each on Amazon. 50% off sounds inviting but when they (B&N) are usually selling them for $40 it's not actually a massive saving. edit: woops, fudged up the price i said amazon are selling them for. |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
You can get probably 20 of the films in the collection used for $5 sure. There are another 600
|

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
20 for a criterion seems like a deal to me.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
The international shipping is cheaper than it is with Amazon so it's definitely worth a look.
I can get 10 of them sent to New Zealand for 250 nzd whereas my last order off Amazon was 270 and that was for 8 Criterions. |
just ordered bigger than life, au revoir les enfants, a woman under the influence, the night of the hunter, and knife in the water. haven't seen the last two yet but i love the other three already. can't wait for them to get here.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
We're not saving that much are we?
Because of postage to Britain it doesn't make the 50% amazing but about £6/$10 saving and no risk of customs is very good for me. :) |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Just bought 3 movies at Barnes & Noble.. 1 is Criterion and 2 are Art House films.. Im happy for the 50% off.... I need to order "Salo" Criterion for my Argentine friend. I bought him "The Night Porter" a few months back and mailed them myself instead of letting B&N ship it and he still doesnt have it. I told him that if he doesnt get it in a few weeks, I will order it from B&N so I know it will make it to him. I asked my friend who works there and the sale is on until July 29th.
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Picked up a few today:
The Freshman Persona A Hard Day's Night Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion Ace in the Hole Paths of Glory Red River Picnic at Hanging Rock With coupons and my 10% member discount, I get the $40 titles for about $16.50. Seems pretty good to me! |
Last year I spent so much in Criterion that about 2 weeks after the sale ... I got a $25 gift card in the mail... I guess they were paying me back for spending so much there... I was buying 7 to 8 films a week for 4 weeks.... ;)

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
I do not feel the need to buy a lot of Criterion DVDs since I have access to the Criterion Collection on Hulu.
But that being said, Naked Lunch is not available for streaming, so I picked that up. Might get another movie later on. We shall see. |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
So I went back through the Criterion Sale at Barnes and Nobles seeing how may pay for my move and I think my final trip to Florida was sent by the Army.
So I purchased a few more DVDs. So my total haul from the Criterion sale include: Naked Lunch Repo Man Black Narcissus Naked I was tempted to buy In the Mood for Love, but I found a significantly cheaper version on Amazon. |
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Where do you buy these cheaps criterion dvds?
|
Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab
Oh the DVD for In the Mood for Love was not a criterion release. The others were and got them at the Barnes and Nobles sale.

I tried to pick out a few that are a lot pricier on Amazon, and Ebay, so I could get a good deal. With the exception of The Great Dictator. Honestly, I'm not saving much with that one, I just really want that in my collection. :) |
