It's the DVD. Blue-ray has the same packaging, here's the link, http://www.criterion.com/films/28051-repo-man.

Just ordered these two because they are going for about £13 on Amazon at the moment, so including postage it comes to about the same price as they would be in the Barnes and Noble sale, so getting them now instead of waiting, plus they will get here faster via Amazon because Barnes and Noble take forever to ship to the UK.

Very happy:

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

So, first of all, I noticed there were a couple of comments regarding cover art, and I'd just like to say that Vampyr has one of my all time favorite covers.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...jpg?1328128328

Anyway, here are my thoughts on the Criterion movies that I've seen so far.

Dazed and Confused - It had some fun moments, but was clearly not meant for my demographic. I didn't find it to be particularly memorable. 4/10

Rosemary's Baby - I watched this for the first time before it became part of the collection, and was blown away. I already said this in another post, but I knew the ending to this film going into it and it still affected me, raising some serious goosebumps. 9/10

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - This was the first actual Criterion Collection DVD I bought, since it was the most widely distributed and I always like to get as many special features as possible. And it provided a great introduction for me. Some found it boring, but I was completely engrossed from the beginning. It even took me a while to figure out that little Benjamin Button was entirely CGI. 8.5/10

House - I first heard of this film while watching a review by The Angry Video Game Nerd, and wanted to see it ASAP but thought I would have a hard time finding it. I felt so lucky when I found it sitting there at Barnes and Noble. In fact, I believe this was the first Japanese B movie I ever watched, predating my views of Tokyo Gore Police or Mutant Girls Squad. 8/10

Jigoku - So far, this is my favorite of the Criterion films that I've seen, and it's easily one of my top three favorite Japanese horror films. Even though I'm not religious, the story affected me on an emotional level. For just a brief moment, it made me fear hell. And that's the highest compliment that I can give to a movie like this. 10/10

Vampyr - As much as I love the cover art, this is one of my least favorites of the collection. It has an interesting style and I can enjoy it for what it is, but it's not a great film by any means. The essay included in the DVD case even states that it's not great. I did love the story Carmilla, but that's not going to affect my score of the movie. 5/10

Equinox - Another film that isn't great, but the low budget special effects provide some decent eye candy, and the corny dialogue is entertaining. 5.5/10

Cronos - While I didn't find this to be as strong as Pan's Labyrinth or The Devil's Backbone, it was still a good story with some genuine thrills. 7/10

When Horror Came to Shochiku - Unfortunately, three of the movies included in this pack were boring and forgettable, but Goke was entertaining enough to make it worth buying for me. The story had me invested from the start, the special effects were dated but cool to look at, and the lines were overacted to hell. So, it was a solid B movie. My rating is for Goke alone. 7/10

I also recently bought Brazil and Naked Lunch, which I haven't watched yet but I'll be sure to share my thoughts on them here when I do. Man Bites Dog, The Blob, The Game, and The Vanishing are all films which I need to get as well, at least off the top of my head.

Like the Badlands there. Haven't seen it in years, but it's a solid Sheen vehicle. He had some really memorable roles back then.

Gave into the Amazon criterion sale... Here's what I got

I was considering getting homicide but went with his more acclaimed work.

&

http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...jpg?1338504064

as usual both are blind buys, I need to start buying more of the films I already love. Once Persona gets a good edition for a decent price it's coming, but for now I still don't own my number 1 movie. Same with Eraserhead.

^ The original Insomnia is fantastic, hope you enjoy it. I think that's the first ever Criterion DVD I got when I was over in America, from a second hand shop. :)

I'm still waiting for my Criterions to come from America, takes some time to get to the UK, hurry hurry!

I'm thinking of buying the following Blu-ray Criterions if still in the $19.99 price when I'm next online:

Medium Cool
Ministry of Fear - only $14.99 at the moment on Blu-ray
Monsieur Verdoux

No, I love the movie, but I felt that CC was more for films that aren't really available or have terrible releases, but La Cage aux Folles dvds that I've seen are great. What could they do besides touch it up a bit?

A film lover cannot find Malick's pathetic masturbatory exercises to be dull?

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

I find his masturbatory exercises to be quite exquisite.

HitchFan97 07-23-13 03:07 PM

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

I wouldn't call them masturbatory exercises, but I guess my key problem with his films could lie in the fact that I simply don't share his intense love of nature. Yes, the images are great, but what's he saying? It's all style and whatever substance there is buried beneath all of it. For him, painting a pretty picture on screen comes first; for me, it's the ideas that are most important. We seem to have opposing sensibilities when it comes to film.

mark f 07-23-13 03:32 PM

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

Days of Heaven is very easy to relate to. It's basically Biblical in its simplicity and power, but unlike The Tree of Life. It builds to that final half hour. Watch Days of Heaven again with the sound turned up. It won't be boring.

Malick actually has a PHD in philosophy at the MIT. So he should be able to put some serious philosophical ideas on a movie. There never was a film director was so overqualified as Malick's is in terms of philosophy.

Deadite 07-23-13 08:46 PM

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

Maybe he does put philosophical matters in, just subtly.

wintertriangles 07-23-13 08:55 PM

Depends how you read the images and their juxtapositions. That's where his philosophical explorations are to me. I don't think he's a god or anything but at least it's somewhat different.

HitchFan97 07-23-13 09:53 PM

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

No doubt he has something to say, but I think he's too enamored with the images to really give those statements the proper focus they deserve.

Learn something new everyday. I wonder if it will show up on Hulu Plus. The whole reason I have a subscription is for the Criterion Collection movies they have available to stream. I am thinking if it ever does it will be a few years for the sake of their DVD sales.

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

^ Just found out Criterion are putting out a different edition of Blue is the Warmest Colour later on in the year so I will not be getting that Criterion, not buying it twice...

It will be arriving in a super barebones version first, with the boutique label already warning customers: "A full special edition treatment of this film will follow at a later date."

That's why it's so cheap for a brand new release I guess... the special edition is rumoured to have the director's cut on it that will make the film about 40 minutes longer. It's already 179ish minutes long.

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to get Derek Jarman's Jubilee. It usually goes for silly prices when out of the sale. I got about half way through the DVD years ago when I rented it but the disc was damaged and it wouldn't play anymore and they didn't have extra discs at the rental.

You can get most of them for like 25 bux each on Amazon. 50% off sounds inviting but when they (B&N) are usually selling them for $40 it's not actually a massive saving.

edit: woops, fudged up the price i said amazon are selling them for.

We're not saving that much are we?
Life Aquatic that I ordered above cost me £16/$27 from Barnes & Noble, that includes the postage to Britain. From Amazon the same blu-ray would have cost me £22/$37 including postage, and not forgetting the risk of fines(because Amazon prices makes it go over the customs limit to import into Britain) that would bring it to £30+/$51+ if caught by our Royal Mail service because unfortunately they have a disgusting handling fee.

Because of postage to Britain it doesn't make the 50% amazing but about £6/$10 saving and no risk of customs is very good for me. :)

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

Just bought 3 movies at Barnes & Noble.. 1 is Criterion and 2 are Art House films.. Im happy for the 50% off.... I need to order "Salo" Criterion for my Argentine friend. I bought him "The Night Porter" a few months back and mailed them myself instead of letting B&N ship it and he still doesnt have it. I told him that if he doesnt get it in a few weeks, I will order it from B&N so I know it will make it to him. I asked my friend who works there and the sale is on until July 29th.

Picked up a few today:

The Freshman
Persona
A Hard Day's Night
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
Ace in the Hole
Paths of Glory
Red River
Picnic at Hanging Rock

With coupons and my 10% member discount, I get the $40 titles for about $16.50. Seems pretty good to me!

Last year I spent so much in Criterion that about 2 weeks after the sale ... I got a $25 gift card in the mail... I guess they were paying me back for spending so much there... I was buying 7 to 8 films a week for 4 weeks.... ;)

I was looking for these three at three different stores, none had them, unreal. Sure you can get them online but I WANNA FEEL THEM NOW

This sale is clearly a cause of mass hysteria

I do not feel the need to buy a lot of Criterion DVDs since I have access to the Criterion Collection on Hulu.

But that being said, Naked Lunch is not available for streaming, so I picked that up. Might get another movie later on. We shall see.

So I went back through the Criterion Sale at Barnes and Nobles seeing how may pay for my move and I think my final trip to Florida was sent by the Army.

So I purchased a few more DVDs. So my total haul from the Criterion sale include:

Naked Lunch
Repo Man
Black Narcissus
Naked

I was tempted to buy In the Mood for Love, but I found a significantly cheaper version on Amazon.

Where do you buy these cheaps criterion dvds?

Re: The Official Criterion Collection Reviews Tab

Oh the DVD for In the Mood for Love was not a criterion release. The others were and got them at the Barnes and Nobles sale.

Did you buy in store? I’m attempting to get my extra ten percent online, but it’s not allowing me to. Maybe I’ll just have to stop in tomorrow. Oh, and nice pickups, by the way!

Anyways, I plan on picking up Smiles Of A Summer Night (blu-ray), La Bete Humaine, Le Feu Follet, Cronos (blu-ray), and The Great Dictator (blu-ray.)

I tried to pick out a few that are a lot pricier on Amazon, and Ebay, so I could get a good deal. With the exception of The Great Dictator. Honestly, I'm not saving much with that one, I just really want that in my collection. :)
