Sorry, I didn't mean to make it look like I was correcting you... I almost listed The Boondock Saints in my original list... :) btw, have you ever seen The Wind That Shakes the Barley? When I redo my top 100 list, it will probably be in my top ten...

Oh, and I'm adding Holden's picks to my 'to see' list... they look pretty interesting...

Of the many not mentioned yet, my favorite ones from Ireland or about the Irish include:

Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx - a charming romantic comedy with Gene Wilder and Margot Kidder
Shake Hands With the Devil (1959) - Gritty IRA action drama with James Cagney
Widows' Peak - Witty dark comedy with Mia Farrow, Joan Plowright and Natasha Richardson
The General (1998) - True-life Irish gangster saga with Brendan Gleeson
The Playboy of the Western World (1962) - Fine adaptation of the classic J.M. Synge play
The Rising of the Moon (1957) - John Ford's three-part tribute to Irish country life
The Quare Fellow - Stark, powerful film about prisons and capital punishment with Patrick McGoohan and Sylvia Syms

The following are almost equally as good and well worth a look:

The Run of the Country
The Boxer
The Field
A Man of No Importance
Cal
The Dead
The Snapper
Into the West
Mrs. Brown
A Circle of Friends
Frankie Starlight

Of the ones mentioned, my fave will always be The Quiet Man, my fave John Ford and John Wayne film. Yes, I've heard all about its flaws from a few people, but I cannot see them because I'm too busy laughing and smiling.

Definitely Darby O'Gill--it's funny, scary, and Irish to the core!

Re: Best Irish Movies

Darby o Gill is not Irish to the core. No offence to people but i really dont like people thinking these kind of movies depict irish life. I usually get asked do Irish people live in thatched cottages and what not (unfortunately for this conversation the only Irish person i have ever known who lives in a thatch cottage was my ex girlfriend) she has moved into a bigger house now though.

My favorite Irish movie is My Left Foot followed by Michael Collins and Garage

Ye have mentioned a lot of movies that are debatably Irish. Like i said they are debatable

Re: Best Irish Movies

Of the ones I've listed, the only one made without "Irish money" is The Quiet Man which may well have more Irish in it than any movie.

Far and Away has the funniest ending ever.
