Why would they remake Oldboy? Terrible idea. It is fine the way it is.

Why would anyone want to remake Battle Royale? Derivative crap, that film. Terrible stuff.

The Oldboy remake's been in the pipes for years i think.

But it seems like a bad idea to me. The film is fine the way it is, no?

Never said it was a good idea, heck, it's sitting at the top of my Favourite Movie list. Was looking at the Oldboy thread in the review area and it's mentioned there as well.

I can't see the point of a remake of Oldboy. I know sometimes they remake films because they think they will get a wider audience and make more money, but I can't see that happening in this case. People who are going to like Oldboy will like it in its original form. People who wouldn't like Oldboy in its original form probably wouldn't like a remade version either. Unless they make substantial changes. In which case, just make your own movie, don't rip off an existing one and change it.

Because the novel is ten times better! It had none of that cryptic side-plot, which was obviously lip-service to get Beat Takeshi in there, and ironically a much more "cinematic" ending. I didn't exactly hate the film, but the book puts it to shame.

Just noticed that the date on the Oldboy remake link is 2005,...let's hope they've given up on the idea since then.

Oldboy really isn't a huge mainstream movie in america , or is battle royale

Though they were huge in their respective countries - Battle Royale won a ton of academy awards the year it was release and a ton of others too

Yes I've heard about Oldboy and Battle Royale being remade (which I think is a bad idea).. I dont see how Oldboy could be a successful remake.. But recently I heard Oldboy is still in production and Battle Royale is on hold.. but then again this was like along time ago so who knows whats going on right now..

I honestly do not see them remaking OLDBOY and keeping the ending true. It works for foreign countries, but not North America. At least not in today's times.

^ Pretty much. Same goes for Battle Royale - I can't see that working for a Western audience. Having a movie about teenagers killing each other in the wake of several highly-publicised shooting sprees like Columbine or VT would probably be considered bad taste by Western audiences.

APPARENTLY.....

Spielberg and Will Smith are in talks to remake OLDBOY.....

I'm a little sad today.

If Will Smith and Spielberg are involved, I'm willing to bet it'll be a PG-13 remake.

PG-13 Oldboy = unintentionally hilarious.

When I read that they are going to make an American version of an Asian movie I can never imagine how they successfully can achieve it. The Departed is the only movie that came close, but still no cigar.

In the case of Battle Royale I would think the product being no more than a standard Hollywood torture-porn slasher-/horror-flick. A movie tailor made for the American thirteen- and fourteen year old audience.

Re: Oldboy and Battle Royale Remakes ?

Who knows, they might end up bastardising the twist to make it easier to digest? How many people in American audiences are really comfortable with that?

It's official , but Will Smith said it's going to be a film about the original manga.

Does anyone know the differences between the manga and the film ?

Re: Oldboy and Battle Royale Remakes ?

Yes. In the Manga, it is ten years versus 15, the motive for the villain's game is different, etc. The first issue of the manga comes with the SD Ultimate Collector's Edition of Oldboy.
