Movie Forums Top 100 of the Aughts (the 00s) - Preliminary Thread

4 Attachment(s)

It's ON! You all asked for it! By popular demand, we're on our way to our next countdown: the 2000s, the 00s, the "aughts", the new millennium. So get your air guns ready, grab a milkshake, and prepare to vote for the best films of the decade.

LIST OF GENERAL RULES

So here's the list of who continues to live, and who gets the end of the sword:
  • Submit your ranked list of twenty-five (25) titles, from best to worst, using our nifty, new ballot tool (see below)
  • Films will be awarded points as follows: 25 points for 1st place, 24 points for 2nd place, 23 for 3rd and so on, all the way down to one point for your 25th placed film.
  • If you submit less than 25 films, then points will be redistributed accordingly (i.e. if you submit 10 films, your top film will receive 10 points, then 9 for your 2nd place, 8 for your 3rd place, etc.)
  • Generally speaking, new members can send in a list as soon as they've been a member here for one month. Other cases can be treated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Films that are part of a series or trilogy (Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill, etc.) must be submitted as separate films.
  • Any film listed as 2000-2009 on IMDb is eligible for our list (see below)
  • No peeking! Anyone who reveals their submitted list before the countdown has ended will be disqualified.
  • The deadline for entries will be December 2, 2021. That gives you three (3) full months to catch up, research, dig up, or refresh anything you might put up on your list.

THE BALLOT

Where do you put your vote for Pedro? Well, just like we did on the previous Foreign Language Film Countdown, we're gonna be using our new ballot toy, courtesy of Yoda, which you can access here:

It will look like this:

  • Just type the name of the movie you want and select it from the drop-down list.
  • If the movie doesn't appear, you can click the link on the upper right corner ("movie you want not showing up") and paste the URL of the movie from the IMDb or TMDb.
  • Check, and double-check, the names and dates of the film as you choose them, to avoid mistakes and confusion. Remember that there can be several films with the same title (especially, foreign films)
  • There should be a minimum of ten (10) entries per ballot.
  • You will receive a copy of your list via PM after you submit.
  • All ballots are final, so make sure everything is set before submitting.

ELIGIBILITY

So, who can join this "fellowship" of films? As was said above, the basic premise is that any film listed as 2000-2009 on IMDb is eligible for our list.

As for other eligibility situations:
  • There are bound to be some edge cases (limited releases, foreign releases, etc.) which can be brought forward in the thread and discussed accordingly.
  • Television series and mini-series are NOT eligible.
  • Other eligibility questions can be politely discussed in this thread. Curator's decision is final

There is a recommendation thread available where you can share lists and thoughts on eligible films for others to check.

So choose well, choose wisely, always respect the opinions and thoughts of others, but most of all, HAVE FUN!

May the best 2000's film win!!

(please, not The Dark Knight! not The Dark Knight!)

Eligibility issues and clarifications:
  • Each Lord of the Rings film counts as a separate entry/film.
  • Same applies to Kill Bill. Each Volume counts as a separate entry/film, since that's how they were originally released.
  • The Japanese anime Redline is eligible, even though TMDB lists it as a 2010 release.

Interesting that partial ballots will be prorated. I don't think that's ever actually been done with any of the previous countdowns.

Not that the change will affect me. I could fill four ballots and still have leftovers. I doubt I'll even try for a one-pointer this time.

Ok, question.

How do we navigate between "hey guys are you sure you know about that movie before voting for another ?" and "hmm, no no, just asking, doesn't mean it's on my secret vote list or anything" ?

I think it makes for a more balanced voting. I mean, if the only 2000's film I saw was Battlefield Earth and I say "well, it was crap, but I'll vote for it", that film will automatically get 25 points, when it would've probably been just one if I had seen/voted more films (of course, this is an example. We all know Battlefield Earth deserves the win)

Plus, it also helps to encourage people to submit complete ballots, hence more films in the mix.

Very cool Thief! So glad you're doing it and hopefully more of the RT/Corries will particiapte this time around (if not you should bug the hell out them!):D

If you submit less than 25 films, then points will be redistributed accordingly (i.e. if you submit 10 films, your top film will receive 10 points, then 9 for your 2nd place, 8 for your 3rd place, etc.)
I like that, it's fresh and it's not been done before.

THANK YOU for doing this countdown for our MoFo community:)

Not sure if I get what you're asking, but if you're referring to the rule about not "revealing your submitted list", it refers to just that. People can still ask around and recommend their favorites to other people (and we have a thread for that), but you just can't go and post your whole list 1 thru 25 while we're in the middle of the countdown.

Let me know if that answers your question.

Ok. There's a bit of a fine line between "recommending your favorites" and "disclosing your selection", but the fact it goes both ways (others people also recommending favorites we haven't watched yet) does probably alter our initial selections enough to shuffle the cards, I imagine.

It's all certainly obvious for those who participated in it already. I'm only progressively seeing the difference between this and a simple, five minutes long, "post your faves and go home" kind of vote.

Recommend more than 25? :p

In all seriousness I will be recommending films that won't make my 25 just because they won't make my 25 but I still want them in the top 100.

I think there are some members where we absolutely know certain films they will vote for, that isn't the same as disclosing your exact 25 in order.

But the general rule is as follows...

Hopefully this week. Watch a few more to be safe in the mean time! :)

Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the Aughts (the 00s) - Preliminary Thread

I will most likely send my ballot in the week before the deadline. This time around, I am making a concerted effort to get as many films in that I haven't seen yet as possible. I still have many, many films to watch.

Yoda 09-23-21 11:43 AM

Okay, in theory the ballot tool should be good to go!

NOTE: for this countdown, the curator has chosen weighted scoring, which is to say the points your ballot gives out is based on how many total films you have. So obviously, like normal, a full 25 films means your top film gets 25 points, your next film gets 24, etc...but if your ballot is only 10 films your top film will only receive 10 points. If your ballot is 15 films your top film receives 15 points...and so on.

I had to modify the software a bit for this, and after some testing it seems to work fine, but there's, like, a 5% chance I'll have to storm in here and announce I'm closing the tool for a bug fix in case I missed something. I'll monitor submissions today and tomorrow to make sure it's working as intended, though.

Okay, those are the caveats. Here's the tool, basically identical on the front-end to last time:

You're concerned about going to the trouble and losing the "work" or something?

If so, it looks fine. We tested it yesterday and one ballot has come in already.

Assuming you have the list written somewhere already it's really only "risking" a few minutes effort anyway.

Probably a stupid question but... the submitted ballots have to be ranked order from #1 The Best, right?
Meaning that 1. Film = 25 pts ... 25. Film = 1 pt

It is not a countdown, right?

The title of the ballot is named "Submit 2000s Countdown Ballot"
That's very confusing, moreover in the description below the title there is nothing about it?

Sorry for the delayed response, but to your first question, yes. You should rank them in order which is detailed in points 1 thru 3 in the first post.

LIST OF GENERAL RULES
  • Submit your ranked list of twenty-five (25) titles, from best to worst, using our nifty, new ballot tool (see below)
  • Films will be awarded points as follows: 25 points for 1st place, 24 points for 2nd place, 23 for 3rd and so on, all the way down to one point for your 25th placed film.
  • If you submit less than 25 films, then points will be redistributed accordingly (i.e. if you submit 10 films, your top film will receive 10 points, then 9 for your 2nd place, 8 for your 3rd place, etc.)
To your second question, it is a countdown because as soon as the votes are all in, and the ballots are tallied, we will be counting down from 100 to 1.

Hope that clarifies it. Let me know if you have any other question.

Yeah, currently not working on mobile, and frankly a lot of work and testing to get that done. It's also just a very tedious thing for you to do on mobile anyway, so I would strongly advise using a desktop even if it were possible to do either.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

All good, I’ll figure it out.

How you do any of this is beyond me, all is impressive though, especially your list section. How if you save a movie on one list, it carries over to all others as well

You still have two months, so I'm sure you can figure out something before the deadline. If after that time, you haven't been able to do so, then send me a DM and we'll see what we can do.

Could a mobile user send their voting ballot to Thief the old fashion way as a numbered list 1-25? Does that still work or does the ballot have to be sent by the new ballot submission tool?

*I have a desktop so I'm asking for other people just to be helpful:)

I think it's better for people to use the ballot tool since it does the work of totaling the amounts and a bunch of other things, so doing it the old fashioned way sorta defeats the purpose of having it. However, like I told @BooBooKittyFock, if all options are wasted, then something else can be agreed. But again, you all have two months to make the arrangements necessary. I'm sure most of you can get access to a computer at work, school, etc. before the deadline. We'll cross any other rivers when we get there.

Thanks! That took awhile. Mostly because I built the system one (relatively simple) way, then had to expand it over time.

Yeah, definitely use the ballot tool on desktop first. If it's absolutely necessary, I'll say yes, you'll probably be able to just PM me your ballot and I can find a way to enter it for you. But please only as a last resort. :)

I of course will use the ballot tool, I did last time...I liked it.

Question, just for my own curiosity:

I've thought about hosting another countdown, one of these days, just maybe. So, I'm curious how the ballot tool works on your end for the host? Does it automatically put the info into a spreadsheet for you? Or does it arrive in your PM box looking like a numbered list?

EDIT: Seriously, though, there's a combination of those that should make it easy for you to do it. You know this is my first time and so far, I think the only "heavy requirement" is to make time to promote the countdown and, when it starts, to post the entries... and even that shouldn't consume too much time.

Submitted, at first, I wanted to wait for Dune before submitting since I have high expectations but I decided to submit what I have now because I see that if Dune is really good other people will submit it (it is not like it can become an obscure favorite movie of mine).

edit: I now noticed it only includes films form 2000-2009, need to change my ballot ASAP

Dune? But this list is 2000-2009, I’m confused

I though it was top movies of the 2000s, that is 21st century, but I noticed its for the first decade

Nah, promotion is easy, spreadsheets are hard! I don't know how to use a spreadsheet and I didn't when I hosted the 1930s Top 100 countdown. So if using a spreadsheet is now a requirement (I'm still not clear on that aspect)? I might have to pass on future hosting of a countdown.

Finally changed it. Now it has a superhero movie in the top 10 even! I never thought I would do such a thing, but this superhero movie is actually great.

Let me know if you have any issues re-submitting your ballot. @Yoda, should there be any issue? Do you have to clear something on your side?

I'm a spreadsheet freak, so I'm on the other end of the spectrum, in that I might find myself doing one just for fun... but so far, the answer seems to be "NO" to needing to use spreadsheets.

Yeah, I have to wipe it out manually. @Guaporense, when you said you "changed it" you just mean you updated your list on a text file or something somewhere, yeah?

I assume that's it. He/she sent me a DM with a revised list, but the ballot I have from the tool is the previous one.

Yoda 10-04-21 11:48 AM

Re: Movie Forums Top 100 of the Aughts (the 00s) - Preliminary Thread

Ah. If it's just a handful of changes can you send me them so I can update manually?

I might have to see if I can augment the tool to throw an error if someone tries to do this, because fixing this stuff manually is fairly tedious.

Done.

Cool, I'll fix that today.

Meanwhile, I think I managed to restrict the ballot tool to films from 2000 to 2009. It should now throw an error if you try to select anything else. Only took a couple of minutes, too, assuming I did it right.

I think there's a chance there'll be some edge cases, with films that saw a limited or North American release or something right around the cutoff, so we'll see how it goes. Right now it's just using the year on TMDB.

I send a PM with the new list. Like the old way these countdowns were done.

Just to clarify - are you accepting ballots from people with shorts on?
Or will I have to finally concede summer is over when submitting mine late-Nov / early-Dec and put on me long trousers to go through the process :)

(really hope I'm still allowed submit a ballot after this post)

The primary thing we're encouraging people to do is submit their ballots with a helicopter beanie. That's the only one we must insist. Once we go below the neck, everything is game, I guess.
