Three Colours Trilogy set(Blu-ray) Frances Ha(Blu-ray) Badlands(Blu-ray) Rosemary's Baby(Blu-ray) Repulsion(Blu-ray) Shallow Grave(Blu-ray) Harold and Maude(Blu-ray) Rushmore(Blu-ray) Blow Out(Blu-ray) The Devil's Backbone(Blu-Ray) The Battle of Algiers(Blu-ray) Close Up(Blu-ray) Repo Man(Blu-ray) The Great Dictator(Blu-ray) Monsieur Verdoux(Blu-ray) Medium Cool(Blu-ray) Traffic(Blu-ray) Paths of Glory(Blu-ray) Le Cercle Rouge(Blu-ray) Days of Heaven(Blu-ray) Black Narcissus(Blu-ray) The Uninvited(Blu-ray) Seconds(Blu-ray) Tiny Furniture(Blu-ray) Ministry of Fear(Blu-ray) Au Revoir Les Enfants(Blu-ray) Z(DVD) Missing(DVD) Eclipse Series 11: Larisa Shepitko Films(Wings, and The Ascent)(DVD) ^ All the above blu-rays and DVDs were bought in the Barnes & Noble 50% off sales, and on Amazon when they were under $20. The rest are all DVD that I got before I started collecting blu-rays: The Sword of Doom Clean, Shaven Au Hasard Balthazar The Double Life of Veronique Pandora's Box The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou - Will be upgrading this to blu-ray when the next sales are up. 3 Women Band of Outsiders Sisters The Lady Vanishes The Vanishing Insomnia The Third Man Diabolique Eyes Without A Face - this is getting a blu-ray release here in Britain next month, so going to upgrade to blu-ray then. Le Samourai The Passion of Joan of Arc - I also have this on blu-ray when it was released in an amazing set here by Masters of Cinema(British version of Criterion Collection basically). Shock Corridor Tout Va Bien Youth of the Beast Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Solaris Dazed and Confused Slacker Short Cuts Seven Samurai Think that's all of them so far. |
Re: Criterion collectors
I am a big Criterion hound. Here is my collection. Picking a favorite is hard. I really like the packaging they have been using lately for the Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs. With that in mind, I might say Persona is my favorite, beautiful packaging and artwork. I also love my Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara set, even though I've only seen one of the films in it.
|
I "used to" "Collect" Criterions, in as much as even if I didn't like the movie, I'd by the Criterion transfer for the Special Features... but I often found that even after watching the Special Features and reading the booklets, I still ended up having a distaste for the movie, if not, compounded even more so. So I stopped "Collecting" in that fashion. Now I "Collect" more in preference with my my tastes, and I've found that to be much more rewarding. I also "double-dip" my favorites with Region 2 Eureka: Masters of Cinema titles because they often have features Criterion doesn't and sometimes the booklets are such that they trump Criterion in some regards. (Again, nice to have both).

Re: Criterion collectors
I only have a few Criterion releases. Mostly due to the fact that they tend to be pricey.
Chasing Amy Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Seven Samurai several Kurosawa movies and two of his collections (WII era and Post War) But I do have Hulu plus so I have access to a crap ton of Criterion movies for instant viewing. |
Re: Criterion collectors
Have you ever seen this set, Gunslinger?

Re: Criterion collectors
I would love to own it. Too bad it's out of print now.
|
Re: Criterion collectors
That would be cool to own. But I have more then a few of his movies on DVD anyways.
|
I own that AK 100 Set. It's pretty interesting, the book inside is stunning, and I got it half-price when it was still in release.
|
BTW Gunslinger, you're probably better off with Hulu when it comes to AK 100. About the only thing these transfer's offer is booklet, (which frankly), if you really want to get to know Kurosawa films, Donald Richie and Stephen Price have better books on him. (I personally thought Kurosawa's Autobiography to be less than insightful. I think it was Price who stated it was more like another narrative). But also, the Eclipse Sets, and the legit Criterion DVD's/Blu-Rays have more special features, better booklets, and (in some cases), better transfers of said films. So don't worry about not getting it, by comparison the Hulu channel offers the same thing all things considered.

Re: Criterion collectors
To be honest I am not. I have already seen 27 of his movies. I have The Idiot on DVD, and the other two I need to see are The Quiet Duel and Dersu Uzala which are not on Hulu.
|
I think Kino holds the rights to Dersu Uzala at the moment and chances are they aren't going to let Criterion have rights to it. I haven't cared much for Kino though, the transfers are decent, but the special features tend to be bare-bones and the booklets are usually just "Kino Advertisements", (I will admit though, within the last few years they've gotten better with the Restored Metropolis and the Reboot of Keaton's The General). And last I recall, The Quiet Duel was last released by a small studio and I'm not sure what the story is on it's release since over at amazon you need to order it via third party shipping. More info: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...quiet_duel.htm
http://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/catalogue/the-idiot/ http://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/catalogue/scandal/ I'm getting these soon since the Eclipse version was so bare bones, (not a big fan of eclipse I must say). |
Re: Criterion collectors
I will get the other DVDs via Amazon eventually. Want to watch The Idiot first.
