Re: 2016 Golden Globes

I'd like to say I was right about Hacksaw Ridge, Andrew Garfield, and Mel Gibson getting award recognition despite the fact that most everyone on here said I was wrong and that the movie had no chance.

I started a thread on this a minute before you did.

ADMIN EDIT: merged!

Your Name isn't anywhere :( but at least Elle is! Huppert looks like one of the front runners this year.

This was quite a surprise though, usually I'll have at least heard of the films, but there's quite a few here I never knew existed until now

The Golden Globes often pick a handful of films that have little chance of Academy Awards recognition. Partially because they divide some of their categories up between dramas and comedies/musicals, and partially because they are a small group with weird tastes and/or have been chastized in the past for seeming to be easily influenced if not outright bribeable. Sometimes they strain to include a movie by dubbing it a comedy/musical when it's hard to argue it is, like Ridley Scott's The Martian last year, and then sometimes you get complete head scratchers like the dud The Tourist with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. But if any fanboys or girls are holding out hope that Deadpool will manage a Best Picture nomination next month for the Oscars, don't bet money or your cancer filled testicles on it.

Whether the Academy will go for Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge as heavy, we shall see. La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight certainly don't lose any of their awards season momentum and should all be in the mix for the biggest Oscars.

Holden Pike 12-12-16 10:35 AM

The happiest inclusion for me among the ten Best Picture nominees is Sing Street. No real shot at Oscar glory, outside of perhaps a song nomination, but glad it made the cut here, anyway. I was hoping against hope that Hunt for the Wilderpeople might make it on the comedy side, too, but alas.

I've only even seen two of the nominated films: Deadpool and Zootopia.

Not exactly excited for this.

Meryl Streep is being honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association this year with their Cecil B. DeMille Award, their lifetime achievement recognition for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment". She is also nominated for Best Actress, Comedy/Musical for Florence Foster Jenkins. Much is made, rightly so, of her astounding number of Oscar nominations. This year's competitive nom marks her 27th Golden Globe nomination for feature films (and she has two more in TV movie categories, winning for her performance in HBO's "Angels in America"). She has already won seven Golden Globes for the movie work. The sixty-seven-year-old's nominations, thus far (winners in bold)...

Best Supporting Actress
The Deer Hunter
Kramer vs. Kramer
Adaptation

The Manchurian Candidate
Into the Woods

Best Actress, Comedy/Musical
She-Devil
Death Becomes Her
The Devil Wears Prada
Mamma Mia!
It's Complicated
Julie & Julia
Hope Springs
August: Osage County
Florence Foster Jenkins

Best Actress, Drama
The French Lieutenant's Woman
Sophie's Choice

Silkwood
Out of Africa
A Cry in the Dark
The River Wild
The Bridges of Madison County
Marvin's Room
One True Thing
Music of the Heart
The Hours
Doubt
The Iron Lady

And I've said this many times before but Streep=overrated

Could be, but then, when 99% of people think you're the greatest actress who ever lived, you can be overrated and still be really, really amazing.

Camo 12-12-16 12:14 PM

Thanks Holden for including the names of the films  I would've went nuts trying to look them up from MoJos post haha.

I've seen 17 films this year but unsurprisingly not much that was nominated. Of the ten best picture nominees all i've seen is Sing Street, definitely planning on seeing the majority of those with the main exception being Deadpool which i don't care about. Best Actor, Drama i've seen both Joel Edgerton and Viggo Mortensen, i'd give it to the former out of those too but Viggo was really good too. Actress, Drama i've only seen Ruth Negga. That's it for acting and basically all of the categories i care about, so plenty to watch.

I wasn't one who said no chance or commented at all but to be fair you said the best picture oscar which hasn't happened yet.

I agree. I think she is consistently good but i don't think any of the performances i've seen from her at least were that great.

Have you seen Manchester By The Sea and La La Land, or do you disagree with them for a different reason?
