Looking for a film around 1979

Around 1979, give or take a year or two. I was about 8-10yo so I remember it like it was a dream. My parents took me to a movie and the only thing I can remember was a scene in hell. Maybe someone goes to hell? I don't believe it was a full out horror movie. I think it may either have had just creepy undertones or was about religion. I know it's not much to go on.

No, it wasn't Sci-Fi at all. I've thought about it some more and I believe it would have to be between 1975 and 1980, most likely 1977 or 1978. I believe it dealt with religion or the afterlife, and probably not a well known movie, although I saw it in the cinema. In English.

The Sentinel (1977) maybe?

I have never seen this movie but it kind of fits your description and timeline, but after watching the trailer I am definitely putting this on my list to watch, looks like a great cast.

I checked those lists but could not come up with a match. I actually saw The Sentinal at the movies when I was 6. Great horror film that gave me nightmares, that fits the timeline-but not the one. Between seeing The Exorcist, The Omen, The Sentinel, The Shining, Burnt Offerings, Trilogy of Terror, and the one I'm looking for all at an early age, I had nightmares well into my mid teens. Although I do not believe the one in question is a horror movie like the others.

You said you saw the movie in the cinemas in English, not sure if you meant dubbed as this was maybe a foreign film or an English speaking one, which could still be foreign.

Alucarda (1978) maybe?

If this is not the one can you remember if this was dubbed foreign or animated, any more little details.

It was an American film in English and not a period piece, and not animated.

I know you said that it was not a full on Horror but you might wanna try this site and see if anything jumps out at you. It looks like there were quite a few religious/horror made around that time.

Was it Absolution with Richard Burton from 1979?

Maybe it was Bernie Casey in Gargoyle. Hellish caves and he certainly looked like a devil. How about The Devil's Rain with Ernest Borgnine (and a really young John Travolta & William Shatner)? 70's were prime time for hell movies.

Also, I love The Sentinel.
