Movie Poster a Day with JayDee

Movie Poster a Day with JayDee

This is an idea I had for a thread a long while back but somewhat forgot about, and was then reminded of when Sexy did his countdown of 100 posters he liked.

I've always loved and been fascinated by movie posters, considering them a real art form. So I thought I'd share some with all my MoFos. I love a whole variety of different types of movie posters, so this thread should be quite a varied mixture of posters; beautiful posters for classic movies, lurid posters for trashy movies, surreal and bizarre posters from Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, East Germany etc), posters for 50s B-movies that always promised more than their budget could possibly deliver etc.

For the most part I will be avoiding the main, recognisable posters for well known films. Whenever I do include a poster for a popular film it will either be a foreign design, a lesser seen variant or one created by the ever burgeoning community of artists/fans who post their stuff online. On top of that I will include posters for films that most people have never seen or even heard of. My reasonings for including posters could be beautiful art, a clever idea, eye-catching weirdness, something really funny, a terrific tagline etc. Basically any poster I post is one that for whatever reason I find entertaining or interesting.

I thought this thread may also help to encourage me to try and stick around more regularly, giving me a reason to post at least once a day. Though as people who know me will not be surprised to hear, I already know I'll miss some days here and there. But I'll try my best to keep it updated fairly regularly. I will admit though that the thread may well die a quick death.

How long I keep it going will depend on a few factors; how much interest it generates, how long I can bothered with it, how many posters worth posting I can find etc

When it comes to posters for Jaws, pretty much every single one of them focuses on the terror of the shark (the teeth, the fin, the blood etc). This one goes the opposite way with a much more restrained design. Instead it's like a travel poster or a postcard for a seaside resort, presenting the calm before the storm. The detail about this poster I love is the black fin hidden in the woman's parasol, hinting at the impending danger. It's a touch that I didn't even notice originally. On top of that it's just a beautiful piece of art from the man generally regarded as the premier creator of alternative movie posters. Steven Spielberg is such an admirer that he owns a print of this poster, and also purchased several prints to give to friends.

I'm doing the same thing with my room in uni! So far I have a still of Sean Young from Blade Runner. A Suspiria poster, and a picture of Howl's Moving Castle in a rural setting.

But I'd like to buy a couple more before I go there, so this thread will be very useful, I'm sure! :)

Eternal Sunshine... is perhaps unsurprisingly one of the most popular subjects around when it comes to alternative movie posters, very much appealing to those with an inclination towards the artistic side. There are a lot of great designs out there, some of which I will likely post in the future, but I went with this one to start with. What really got me is the error message which I thought was just very clever and funny.

Love the idea JayDee. I really enjoy fan art posters. Make sure you add some Wes Anderson. ;)

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. However some pictures make that seem like a very conservative estimate. I give you...Hell in a Bottle.

I don't think I've ever even heard of that movie, but that certainly is a unique image.

Awesome thread, JayDee. Glad to see you find something to keep you active and invested in. I'm sure it feels good to do something that takes you in the direction of your love for movies instead of your ongoing complications. I'll be visiting this thread then and now for sure!

I'd never heard of the film either until stumbling across the poster, but that certainly won't stop me posting them. The poster I'm thinking of for tomorrow I'd never heard of either and doubt that many people will have.

Oh and I don't think we're the only ones to not be aware of the film. On imdb it has been voted on by a grand number of 7 people!!!

She's in a similar position to a young woman I saw in a pornographic film recently. Except there was a gang of well built young men spraying her with a sticky substance from what appeared to be a third leg.

Problem? :p

Between your reaction and the fact that it's the least repped poster leads me to believe that, in the words of Marty McFly, I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet... but your kids are gonna love it.

I'm amazed he hasn't dropped by actually. I thought he was attracted to anything remotely kinky like a bloodhound.
