I had been putting off watching Gone Girl because I wanted to read the book first, but it was one of a small list of films that I had left to see from last year, and I just couldn't wait anymore. I wasn't disappointed. It's the ultimate twist on the cheating husband film, and a feminist's delight.

As you may have guessed, the film starts with the mysterious disappearance of Ben Affleck's wife, Amy. And then the most elaborate and clever story of revenge slowly unfolds. There are times in the film when I didn't know whether to empathize with his wife, or condemn her as a heartless sociopath. That's the beauty of Gone Girl, it questions social cliches, and can be both interpreted as both a feminist and a misogynistic film. The plot reminded me of Zodiac in the way it unfolded into a great mystery full of twists and turns that kept me on my toes throughout.

I've never been a big Ben Affleck fan. His acting in the past has been questionable. That, and the annoying, almost sedated way in which he talks. But in this he was pretty good. Rosamond Pike was superb as the unhinged wife Amy, and I think she was robbed of the Oscar. All in all, Gone Girl is an outstanding mystery thriller. If the brilliant screenplay is anything to go by, I'm looking forward to seeing how the book compares.

The back story of Ant-Man ties-in closely with Iron Man. The film begins with a flashback to 1989 with Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) arguing with Tony Stark's father over the development and ownership of his breakthrough 'Pym particles' - which can increase and decrease the mass of objects or living beings. To trigger the particles, Pym developed a special serum, which only he knows the how to make. He leaves Stark industries after the argument and later starts his own company.

Now back to the present day. Pym's young protege Darren Cross has his own plans for Pym particles - and intends on using them to create an army to sell to the highest bidder. The only problem is he doesn't know the secret to doctor Pym's special serum, and tries in vain to replicate it. This is when Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) comes into the picture. As an ex-con with nothing much to loose, and because of his skills as a professional thief, Dr Pym chooses Scott Lang to become the owner of his Ant-Man suit. In exchange for helping him stop Darren Cross, he promises to help him regain the trust of his family.

The film has a wacky comedy vibe, which really prevented me from taking it as seriously as I would other Marvel films. The love story between Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne and the sickly, tear-drenched scenes in which Dr Pym reminisces about the past, had me looking up at the cinema ceiling and thinking "when will the action start?". It's does eventually start - over an hour in... With one pretty good one on one battle, and then the rest of the action is concentrated on the ending. The ending is the highlight. It was both hilarious and spectacular. Not all of it worked for me, but if anything, Ant-Man brings something different to the Marvel universe.

San Andreas

The disaster movie handbook played out like a bad pantomime, that's San Andreas. One giant and unlikely cliche. First we see Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, a reckless helicopter pilot with huge guns and an incredibly versatile skill set, saving a stupid woman from her car and a highly questionable cgi set piece. So as you already know, a huge earthquake is going to hit California, and it's up to The Rock to save the day. The natural and inevitable cliche is present, namely the fact that The Rock is divorced and still in love his wife, and gets the opportunity to win her back by saving the population of the west coast. He also has a really hot daughter, the movements within whose bra were simply mesmerizing, and the films only highlight.

The Rock first goes on a mission to save his wife from a skyscraper. She is, like her children, very lucky indeed. Having survived the internal collapse of the building, and after spending five minutes screaming and running around aimlessly, she somehow climbs onto the roof and signals The Rock to fly his chopper in.This is a very lucky family indeed. They survive being buried under a huge building, drowning, helicopter crashes and much more. There's also The Rock's skill set: He can fly choppers, planes, drive boats, knows practically everything, and saves around 5 million people simply by harnessing the awesome power of his tight grey t-shirt and huge sweaty muscles.

The film was bound to have a scientist know it all, and in this case it was Paul Giamatti's turn to play the egghead. He spent most of the film sat in front of a back of tv monitors looking constipated and stating the obvious, whilst flirting with his assistant. Everything in the film just felt familiar, like a condensed omnibus of the last 20 years disaster movies. Not to mention a lot of stolen one-liners as well. Eventually, The Rock's daughter and two token characters take refuge in a half- built and unsafe building. The daughter inevitably finds an excuse to give her boobs some air, when she rips her top off to make a bandage, followed by some gratuitous underwater wobbly boob shots.

After their skydiving excursion, The Rock and his wife ride a 500 foot tsunami wave into the heart of the city and luckily enough turn up right outside the building his daughter is in ..Anyway, he pumps some sea water out off his daughter's ample chest, lets out a few cheesy one-liners and the saves the world. This film is absurd.

I haven't watched the movie yet but I still plan to. I totally know what to expect though and I don't mind spoilers because hey, what is there to spoil really? :p

I look forward to cheese and clichés galore! Oh, and those countless boob shots or whatever sounds interesting! I'm a little bit more interested to watch the movie now lol. Anyways, can't say your review surprises me, though it might be even dumber than I initially thought.

Good review, Slob!

i've seen this film twice, paz vega is really one hot actress, and i like her performances, i didn't know she had a great body since i saw spanglish but she showed no flesh there.
anyway i consider the movie to have very nice atmosphere of eroticism and intrigue, it has it's moments i would say, but still flawed, but the whole premise makes the movie enjoyable.
jason clarke was by his own standards a unknown back then i would say, since he broke out on the scene lately. he gives a nuanced performance of a man falling in love with wrong girl and shows it nicely.
off course no hollywood oscar nominations for this, but the mood of the film and the music is good. the story is cliched yes, but what matters to the viewer is they way the film is delivered, how it's edited etc..... and i find it enjoyable in the regard, this movie reminds of the movies that anabella sciorra did in the early nineties, like"whispers in the dark".
i give this film a 7.5/10 overall.

For me ALIENS is the best sci fi movie I have ever seen. The characters, the action, the plot. All done extremely well. "have you ever been mistaking for a man" , "no have you?"

Amazing film that I cant see being beating, even by the new alien film in the works.
