Platoon (Directed By: Oliver Stone)

''Shut up! Shut up and take the pain! Take the pain!''

Well Platoon is another first watch for me, i havn't seen many of Oliver Stones movies, i have seen Any Given Sunday, World Trade Center and Wall Street 2 and thats about it but Platoon i must say is the best of what ive seen. The Movie has quite a simple plot, its about a group of young soldiers as they patrol the jungles of vietnam in 1967, they battle everything from, bugs, war, there emotions and feelings, exaustion, to even battling with each other and its a very powerful movie.

Well i'll start by saying this movie would of made my top 50 without a doubt. With such a simple plot this movie has so much going on, there was never a time were i was feeling bored or restless it grabs your attention and takes you along. The cast i think is what makes this movie and there was 3 strong performances that stuck out for me, first is Charlie Sheen, second Willem Defoe and then John C. McGinley, also known as Dr Cox. These Three actors i thought where fantastic especially Charlie Sheen in by far his best role yet... i say yet like its gonna change haha. We see Sheen taking drugs, getting emotional, going abit crazy by the end of the movie i was thinking have i just watched a war movie or a movie about Charlie Sheens personal life.

Platoon has some really powerful scenes throughout the movie that at times left me looking away from the screen, its a very strong story and could be the best war film i have seen. If you have never seen this movie like me you should really check it out.

Taxi Driver(Directed By: Martin Scorsese)

''You're only as healthy as you feel.''

Well another first watch for me. I seen Taxi Driver a few weeks ago for the first time and i was not to sure about it to be honest, yeah sure it has its good points but i thought it also had its bad. Taxi driver is about... you guessed it a taxi driver, an ex marine taxi driver who suffers from insomnia. Travis played by Robert De Niro is a loner who is discusted in new york city and what is going wrong with mankind. Taxi Driver follows Travis as he becomes obsessed with a young woman Betsy and how Travis wants to make the world a better place.

Well first of Robert De Niro is fantastic, ime a big fan of De Niro and love alot of his older movies like Goodfellas, Casino, Heat... not so much his newer releases ( Fockers nooooo), but anyway this was a brilliant performance and probabley one of his finest. Jodie Foster was also great, she hasn't changed at all haha she looks exacley the same, all the cast infact are great which is why alot of people may love this movie, not to sure where i stand with it tho. First problem i had was it seemed to go on for ever, there was times where i got bored and it wern't just the once either. Another thing was that stupid music that played throughout the whole movie, it starting really annoying me. Ime not saying i didn't like Taxi Driver it has alot of great scenes and moments, ime just not as big of a fan as a lot of other people.

Maybe if i had seen this movie back when it was released i might of enjoyed it alot more... (even tho i wern't born). Taxi Driver is a good film, not great but i enjoyed it, the cast where all great and the movie looked good... i liked the whole dark feel it had going on. Still ime glad i got around to watching Taxi Driver.

That's not de Niro. That's just an old man having some fun and getting employment on past glories. It's a form of fraud, IMO.

I think this might be the first time I've heard of someone not liking the soundtrack. Even I like it and I don't like most of the Bernard Herrmann scores I've heard.

I thought it helped set the mood up for the film perfectly.

I love Taxi Driver, and I'm glad you at least appreciated De Niro's brilliant performance. 6/10 is at least a decent score, and I can't wait for you to review other older films.

I hope you get around to seeing Cape Fear. Now that is a Scorsese masterpiece.

Seems like there are a lot of great movies that you havent seen yet. Aliens made No. 2 on your top 50 list and you only just saw it recently.

I bet you will be making a very different top 50 in a few years.

It is surprising that you are a member of a movie forum and you havent yet seen the likes of Taxi Driver/Platoon/Aliens.

Yes, I have. Solid picture, but I just prefer the remake.

Rise of The Planet Of The Ape's (Directed By: Rupert Wyatt)

''You have no idea what you're dealing with!''

Well ime gonna start this review by saying this movie is awesome!. Rise the of the ape's is about Will Rodman (James Franco), Will is trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer's Disease, testing his cure on a group of chimpanzees it gives them a human level of intelligence. In the lab one of the chimps goes on a rampage and gets shot dead, later we hear she went on a rampage because she was pretecting her baby Caesar. All the the chimps are ordered to be put down in the lab after the incident but Caesar is secretley taken home by Will, will later learns that Caesar has inherited his mothers intelligence and far beyond what anyone could of imagined. Not Wanting to give much more away about the story, but its Fantastic.

Rise Of the Planet Of The Apes ( Stupid Title) was better than i imagined, Its the summer blockbuster that everyone has been waiting for and probabley the best film of the year so far. With its great story, great acting and fantastic special effects it all makes for a special movie and the best Planet Of The Apes movie ive seen (ive only seen Tim Burton's Like, but oh well). James Franco is are leading star and he does a great job, its just Caesar over shadows him, yeah thats right the apes are what make this movie so excitable, i mean who doesn't love monkeys and there is a whole bunch of them. Rupert Wyatt exacutes a brilliant story, it just builds and builds and builds and then delivers a massive ending and its great to watch, its a really well made movie. I thought this was a prequel to the Planet of the Apes series, but afting watching this movie it looks like it going to be a whole new franchise, and if the rest are anything like this where in for a treat.

Overall this is a brilliant movie, its a great story with a huge exciting Ape war at the end, what else do you want from your summer blockbuster. Ime looking forward to seeing what Rupert Wyatt will bring to the table in the future becuase this could be a really good series.

Yeah thats right, ive rated this higher than Taxi Driver haha.

Of the seven (including this one) "Apes" films you've seen, this is better than the worst one. :D I know everyone thinks the first one's the best, but I prefer "Conquest" and "Battle" a lot more.

Super 8 (Directed By: J.J Abrams)

''Bad things happen, and it's no one's fault? I'm sorry.''

Its 1979 and a group of friends from a small town are trying to make there own zombie movie on there super 8 camera. While filming there movie they see a huge train crash, but this was no accident! no the train was derailed by a truck driving along the tracks and smashing head on into the train. Well we all know the train is carrying an Alien and its now loose in there town, so lets get on with it.

Well Super 8 for me was a big dissapointment, Okay its got great reviews and iv'e heard nothing but good things about it, but for me i thought the movie was really slow and i was confused with what they was trying to do. Well it starts with what has to be the biggest and most over the top train crash ever (we seen most of it in the trailer). Then its takes about an hour maybe even longer before before we actually see the Alien, which you don't get to see that much off -- think Cloverfield. The Trailer makes out that this movie is some sort of big Alien Blockbuster and its far from it, you see most of the alien parts in the trailer. I'll explain, the movie is more about the children and how they all have things going on in there life's, relationships with there parents, the loss of a parent, a relationship forming with two of the kids and of course them all trying to finish there movie. Then we have like a second part of the movie going on about an Alien, only this part of the movie gets over shadowed by whats going on with the children and they didn't seem to fit together for me.

Super 8 was not a movie for me, ok its a nice movie and the children all do fantastic jobs and i have to give them that, its just nothing like what i was expecting and it's a shame i was really looking forward to this movie. If you are going to watch this movie and your expecting a big action Alien blockbuster your wrong! if your going to see it expecting and this is a qoute "a gripping and exciting tale of finding one's place in the world amidst tragedy." then maybe its for you. Overall its not a bad movie (apart from the end), i think i was just expecting something completely different that's all. Hats of tho for the way it looks and feels, it looks great!.

MovieMan8877445 08-14-11 01:29 PM

Re: Lud's Reviews

It was supposed to homage to Spielberg's early films like E.T. and Close Encounters, why were you expecting a big action alien blockbuster?

Well this didn't have me thinking the movie was about a 2ft fat alien that rides on the front of a girls bike. :D
