The Best- Best Picture of the Decades
Just figured with Oscar time rolling around I was curious as to everyone's favorites that have won the prestigous awards for each decade. Obviously we all know that there are some great films that didn't even win the award that are better than the ones that have won it, but I figured we would put that aside for now.
Here's how I see it though I've only gotten through about a third of the Best Picture winners altogether: 20's- Sunrise (assuming it counts) 30's- You Can't Take it With You 40's- Casablanca 50's- On the Waterfront 60's- The Sound of Music 70's- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 80's- Rain Man 90's- Unforgiven 00's- Million Dollar Baby |

Re: The Best- Best Picture of the Decades
I'll have to abstain on the 1920s since I haven't seen the two Oscar winners, Wings and The Broadway Melody.
From that period on, my choices ould be: Gone With the Wind (1930s) Casablanca (1940s) From Here to Eternity (1950s) Lawrence of Arabia (1960s) The Godfather (1970s) Driving Miss Daisy (1980s) Forrest Gump (1990s) Chicago (2000s) |

Re: The Best- Best Picture of the Decades
Surprised to see so many people rate The Departed - I've seen it three times and I still don't rate it as an Oscar winner - am I missing something (some good performances excepted)- or was it just a bad year for movies that year?

Re: The Best- Best Picture of the Decades
Well, the conventional wisdom is that it was more of a Lifetime Achievement Award to make up for the fact that the Academy failed to reward Martin Scorsese for Goodfellas. I thought The Departed was very, very entertaining the first time I saw it, and I've probably seen it about a half-dozen times since, and I'm stunned by how well it holds up. I sort of regarded it as the voters throwing Scorsese a bone at first, as most others did, but I feel that way a bit less now. It's an awfully good film.
And yeah, I do think it was kind of a weak year; the other nominees were The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine, Babel, and Letters from Iwo Jima. No huge standout, really. |
