ueno_station54's Top Whatever of Whenever

Only recently started keeping a favourite films list again so I figured I could share it here as well. Probably won't be writing much (or anything) about any of the films since, if you've read any review I've ever written you'll know they're all exactly the same. No one wants to read that and I don't want to write it. Here goes!

#73. A Nymph of the Waves

One of the few holdovers from my lists from high school. The music still bonks.

I like weird sh*t. Seems like a lot of weird sh*t will pop up here. I've already added a couple films to my watchlist. Good start. Seen only Tekkonkinkreet and think I may have heard of the Shuji Terayama film or maybe just Shuji Terayama. Apparently I've also heard of Matthew Barney because I know of the Cremaster Cycle... just didn't recognize the name.

Re: ueno_station54's Top Whatever of Whenever

I've still not seen that particular Svankmajer flick, but I'll be sure to remedy that soon enough. The only other one from this set I've heard of is Midori, and I only that I've heard of it because it is on my 10,000 film watchlist on imdb. Duvidha is the most intriguing of the group. "Indian folklore ghost film" are words that make my hipster heart happy.

It is certainly all those things, lol. Though I should mention that its definitely not a horror movie in anyway.

Re: ueno_station54's Top Whatever of Whenever

I'm not a huge Norman McLaren fan. Pas de Deux gets credit from me for trying to be something worthwhile, but I don't think it's amazing or anything. Of the handful of McLaren films I've seen, I prefer Neighbors, Lines: Vertical, and the wonderful Blinkity Blank. No McLaren film made my shorts list, but I still have quite a few to watch... someday.

Shanghai Joe is the type of film that I'll eventually get around to and not understand how I could have waited that long to see it... I hope.

Ballet Mecanique is great. Some of those Dadaist films are hit or miss, but this one hits pretty hard. George Antheil did make some wild ass music for this... maybe. Wikipedia tells me the nature of the collaboration is mysterious, which is cool. Either way, film looks good, music sounds good. I dig it.

I love Suspiria and Window Water Baby Moving. I need to see the Obayashi film soon, because Obayashi is a legend. Wolf House looks terrifying. Sono is another director I desparately need to check out. Melies was awesome, don't think I've seen that one though. Black Christmas is good, but I don't really love it. I could see growing appreciation with rewatches later on, but as far as films where the killer makes phone calls go: The New York Ripper. Black Belt Jones looks fun. I'd love to see Happy Hour, but it takes five happy hours to see it. Notre Dames des Hormones looks like something I'll either love or not get at all. Inland Empire and Cries & Whispers are films that I will eventually see because I got big respect for Lynch and Bergman.

The opening scene has some mobsters roll up in a car and the car has 4 flats, not for story reasons. It's beautiful.
