Is Howard The Duck really all that foul or bad?

I just need to know if you can analyze the badness of the film on what made the film bad! Please i would like to know.

Why did it flopped? and why did George Lucas disowned it?

Can you compare the movie to " Battlefield Earth"?

Holden Pike 08-28-04 06:05 PM

No, HOWARD THE DUCK isn't all that bad...it's worse!

First off, what do you care? It's supposedly one of your top hundred and seven and a half favorite films of all-time (and up damn high on that list too).

As for some of the why it is so gawdawful, it gutted all the social satire and dark humor of the original comic book in favor of dumbed-down kiddie fare. That's what pissed-off fans of the comic anyway. But even if you knew nothing of the comic, it's such a poorly made piece of crap, one of ILM's least impressive outings of that time period, and feels like it was written by a thriteen-year-old hopped-up on Ritalin and Count Chocula breakfast cereal, with a re-write by some mid-level Studio hack just before he shot himself in a porno booth down on the Sunset Strip.

Well, both are certainly awful and unwatchable, just pointless, noisy messes of celluloid that should never have been made. But nobody involved with writing the original story for Howard the Duck started their own "religion". I give it ups for that. Though to be fair, there was a campaign Marvel launched in 1976 of Howard for President. Still, it didn't ask for donations or hypnotize celebrities and street urchins.

I've seen worse.

What makes Howard the Duck so infamous is that it bombed so bad at the box office.

I only liked the fact that Jeffery Jones got to act insane...again.

Was it the acting, the midget in the duck costume, Tim Robbins, plot or what?

I kind of liked the movie and it's one of my guilty pleasures! But what's sooo important about the Box-Office? some movies weren't never meant to be box-office gold and we're meant to be cult movies.

I do own the graphic novel collection which has the original Marvel comics, Howard looked different on the comics. George Lucas is planning on making a special edition in selected theaters next year, it's called " Howard The Duck Special Edition" featuring a CGI altered Howard to make him look like a real duck, a different voice such as Robin Williams, Enhanched special effects, remastered soundtrack and never-before-seen footage. Coming to theaters next fall, Howard's back and he's different yet better than ever.

Maybe one day they do a proper Howard movie now that Marvel Comics property has been hot on the screen such as "X-Men", " Blade", " Spider-Man", " Hulk", " Daredevil" and " The Punisher" including the upcoming " Man-Thing". If the new Punisher movie was an improvement over Dolph Lundgren's movie and if the new Fantastic Four movie coming next year might improve over the 1994 version, maybe there should be a new and improved Howard The Duck movie with a CGI Howard, make it more realistic on the plot by making him a comic character sucked from another dimension that brings him out of a comic book to real life where everyone is a hairless ape, have Danny Devito or Rodney Dangerfield provide his voice.

Do you think Howard The Duck can be compare to other box-office disasters like " Ishtar", " Hudson Hawk", " Waterworld" or " The Postman"?

Then why do you keep asking about Howard's box office?

No. They won't.

Yes. They are all box office disasters that got lots of infamy for being box office disasters. It can also be compared to Heaven's Gate, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Town & Country and Cutthroat Island. And how exciting and interesting a comparison it is.

Well im about to remind myself of this film..... just nabbed it off eBay on dvd (back-up copy from laserdisc) for a couple of quid.

Loner 09-16-04 07:19 AM

This thread is still here?

I think the reason this film did so poorly is Lea Thompson's hair...

...I mean it's huge even by Eighties standards.

As a kid I loved it. Though I am sure now I would find it haleriously bad. If it were released today It would wind up on my web sites hall of shame :-P

Sedai 09-20-04 09:33 PM

Tea Barking 09-21-04 11:27 AM

LordChuchu 10-30-04 01:34 PM

I remember watching this movie as a kid too and enjoying it, though I remember very little of it now. Wasnt their a scene in the beggining where you see a topless woman duck taking a bath?

jrs 10-30-04 05:00 PM

Yeah there was.

movie_monkey 10-31-04 11:17 PM

I remember watching this film as a kid...and have not seen it since i was a kid.

Gideon58 03-25-14 07:39 PM

I finally saw HOWARD THE DUCK for the first time about a year ago and I wouldn't say it was a terrible movie, but it's kind of pointless and the screenplay is kind of all over the place and Lea Thompson was just miscast.
