Oh hell yeah. Scorsese is the man. He has directed some of my favorite movies of all time. GoodFellas is my favorite. This man is a directing genius. I can't wait for this one too!

Meanwhile, I too am excited. More excited about Adaptation. Anyone seen it yet?

An "aktor"??? First thing I can say is invest a few bucks in a dictionary. Then invest some time in finding out who Martin Scorsese is. He is only one of the greatest directors of our time. Have you ever seen "GoodFellas" for example?? "Casino"?? "Raging Bull"?? And so on, and so on. Recognize!

Yeah, I'm really "jazzed" about Adaptation, too. But as is per usual, my local theatre probably has no intention to show it until two or three weeks have passed.
Meanwhile, I'm not all that excited about Gangs Of New York, and it seems that the only aspect of it which could possibly excite me is that it's Scorcese's return to the director chair, and possibly his last.
I don't know, I hope he can prove me wrong.

Well, yes, any filmmaker's next film could possibly be their last. But as Scorsese is very active with ideas to burn and has no serious health problems, why in the world would you throw out such speculative nonsense? He could get hit by a bus tomorrow, but so could you. This could have been your last day posting on the board. Live 'em up.

And better see Catch Me if You Can, it may be Spielberg's last movie.
Better see The Pianist, it may be Polanski's last.
Better see The Hulk, it may be Ang Lee's last.
Better see Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, it may be Charles Herman-Wurmfield's last.

Well, he is 60, which may not be old but certainly doesn't qualify him as a spring chicken. Anyways, I was more talking about the fact that he hasn't directed anything in 3, almost 4 years. And for someone who obviously has a high-stress job, another 3 to 4 year wait between films becomes more of a risk for this being his last, I don't think it's inconceivable that he could kick the bucket after this next project, or really, after The Aviator comes out.

Regardless, it was an offhand comment, and I was under the impression that he was older than he is.

Gangs of New York went into elaborate pre-production over two years ago now. It's a big movie, it takes a lot of time to make (especially since he wanted to build real sets instead of relying on CGI). This is a project he's been trying to make since after New York, New York in 1977. It is his highest budget ever (somewhere near $100-million), and it simply takes time for a movie like this.

And for the record, The Aviator hasn't been announced as his next project, and may not turn out to be. He has many scripts in various states of development, as most filmmakers do. His focus for the past three years, since Bringing Out the Dead hit screens, has been Gangs of New York.


Scorsese had six films released in the '90s. He had six films released in the '80s. This is only the second year of this decade and he now has one film complete. Assuming the next few productions aren't quite as large in scope (which seems more likely), I'll bet you he'll have five or six films released by the end of 2009. Some filmmakers, like Woody Allen for the past two decades and now Steven Soderbergh on the pace he's on, crank out about a movie a year. But most like to take at least a little time off between productions, which on a decent-sized Hollywood film takes about a year from greenlight to screen. Scorsese's average of one film every couple years is normal. Kubrick and Terry Malick's averages are abnormal, as is Woddy Allen's.

Basically, just as you didn't know how old Scorsese is, you don't seem to have much of a concept of film production schedules in Hollywood. Three years betwwn films, especially when one of them is as large as Gangs of New York, is quite normal.


Not as offhandedly, I'll speculate this won't be Scorsese's last movie. :)

He is my favourite director, though I do not think he has much juice left in him.
I hope I'm wrong, but I see this film flopping, pushing him to the brink, causing him to never direct again.

If it does flop, and he does make another film again. It will be a very SMALL and "personal" film.

But Day-Lewis looks amazing in it.

How can you even say that if you've seen the trailer? If it flops, I place the blame squarely on Lord of the Rings.

I've seen the trailer, and sadly it is nothing special.

I will see it, because i'm interested, but I'm estimating an opening weekend take of around 9 million. (not good for a 100+ million dollar film.)

For some reason his films always do bad in the theater, but they have good shelf life at the video stores.

The only thing that MIGHT save it is Dicaprio. All the little girls are gonna get a big shock.

Good press, bad press. It is a Scorsese movie. It will be great, but it won't make a whole lot of money. People will bitch about the length. Titanic was such an anomaly when you think about it.
