I'm very much down for this. I think Caity Lotz, Yvonne Strahovski, or Emily Blunt could be good in the role.

Holy sh*t, Holy sh*t. I just had an epiphany of who should play this as I was writing another post.

Lake Bell

Ahh it's too perfect. She is ridiculously charming and talented. I think she would do to Captain Marvel what RDJ did for Iron Man...well maybe not that perfect but pretty damn close. If they were looking for a witty lead like Iron Man. It's not like she doesn't have the figure for it! Good Lord.

It would be really nice to see her get the role and the big break that comes with it. The only fear I have is she is a little older and the movie doesn't come out till 2018. She is going be 36 this year. I mean I could careless how old she is but the studio might if they want to make more. She strikes me as being beautiful for the rest of her life though.

Anyways that is my 2 cents. She probably will never be considered but heres to hoping.

Re: Captain Marvel

I'd never heard of Captain Marvel before this movie was announced - based on the pictures on Google it looks like he was just Marvel's answer to Superman back in the day. But seems very redundant now, since he's too much of a doppleganger and will never match Supes' popularity.

If they make a movie out of him they should alter his appearance and persona drastically to avoid him just coming across as a "Superman Rip Off".

Wait I'm confused - forgive me for being comic book-illiterate but there's a female and male version of the same character in Marvel Comics?

Not to be confused with Captain Marvel in the DC Universe? Those pictures you guys have posted with the guy in red with yellow boots is the DC Captain Marvel.

There's a Captain Marvel movie coming out in 2019 called Shazam! that's tying in with the current BvS and Aquaman/Wonder Woman stuff.

The Captain Marvel from Marvel comics was originally Captain Mar-Vell and was initially a rip off of Superman. In another rip off of DC comics, Marvel character was then swapped and changed rather like DC's Green Lantern and Flash...

Oh that explains the confusion, thanks for that ;)

Don't see the point in DC creating a character who looks just like Superman in a new suit (unless he was an alter-ego or something in the comics).

Time to do my info dump/thread bump thing.

First off, and this is something that’s been known since summer of 2016, Brie Larson will play Carol Danvers in both her own solo movie and Infinity War: Part 2. Both films will drop in 2019 (March 8th and May 3rd, to be exact.)

Second: Anna Bowden & Ryan Fleck (probably best known for Half Nelson) will direct the Captain Marvel solo movie, which will be set in the 1990’s and will introduce the Skrulls into the MCU. Samuel L. Jackson will still play Nick Fury, pre-eyepatch.

Today we learn that Ben Mendelsohn and Jude Law will play supporting parts as the Kree villain Yon-Rogg and Kree hero and the original Captain Marvel, uh, Mar-Vell (aka Walter Lawson), respectively.

If my memory serves and it usually doesn't. She becomes Mrs. Marvel because she marries Mar'vell. I never knew Captain Marvel and Shazam! were the same character. I see DC tried to sue the makers of Captain Marvel because he too, was to close of a match to Superman. According to wiki, he was even a bit more popular (gasp!) than Supes for a little while.

I know it's complicated with a lot of comic book history and two different companies having a hero with the same sounding name (I'm not even up on Marvel's current Captain Marvel myself).
But one quick correction: for DC comics (their Captain Marvel was originally owned by Fawcett Comics) Cap and Shazam aren't the same character - Shazam was the name of an ancient wizard who granted Billy Batson the power to turn into Captain Marvel. Billy would say the wizard's name "Shazam!" to activate the lightning bolt that would transform him. And the name Shazam was also an acronym for the various beings and gods that bestowed powers upon Captain Marvel... complicated, I know.

It gets worse with the long legal history between Cap and Superman, Cap's exile from publication, then Marvel Comics creating their own Captain Marvel, the original Cap resurfacing and being acquired by DC and on and on!

Powdered Water 11-24-17 02:21 PM

Re: Captain Marvel

Oh, DC definitely calls him Shazam now. But he started off as Captain Marvel. Probably smart, especially if the Marvel movie machine is going to make an actual Ms. Marvel movie. Wouldn't want to get sued. Which would be funny to me. DC gets sued 60 some odd years later over a comic book character that they themselves sued another company for being too much like their own crappy superhero.

I don't know what DC calls him now (I stopped reading modern comics several years back).

But much of the initial confusion between the characters of the original Captain Marvel and Shazam was because when DC acquired Captain Marvel in the early 70's they titled his comic "Shazam!" (and this was due to the copyright issues with Marvel's character of the same name at that time - DC couldn't use Captain Marvel as a title).
Then, when DC's Cap went to TV, just like the comic, they titled the TV show "Shazam!"

Not an origin story, sort of.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. She’s left her earthly life behind to join an elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by Jude Law’s enigmatic commander.

He says in Avengers "The last time I trusted someone, I lost my eye."
Perhaps he loses the eye, then refuses to get proper treatment and it gets infected.
The movies obviously don't follow the comic books to the letter.

^ I think a male hero would have been shown hitting that same old lady, it looks obvious she's not hitting an innocent woman and the character will turn into whatever creature/villain.

Siddon 09-21-18 06:30 PM

The trailer wasn't a home run but I'm pretty happy with it..this gets into comic book spoilers/spec.

WARNING: spoilers below
It looks like they are taking inspiration from classic Captain Marvel with Danver's backstory retrofitted into the style of early Captain Marvel comics. The original and best Marvel was a sophisticated spy book, Marvel was a agent for the Kree who was on Earth as a spy while slowly becoming a believer in humans. So basically this should feel like a sequel to Winter Soldier.

Oh, I don't know; In Hateful 8 (2015) John the Hangman slaps around villain Daisy Domergue. In Hellboy 2 (2008), Hellboy slugs an old lady who is actually a goblin in disguise.

Iroquois 09-25-18 11:30 AM

Re: Captain Marvel

Yeah, but in those examples there's a context involved that does or doesn't justify it - John Ruth definitely isn't a hero so much as a self-righteous brute and Daisy's villainous nature does little (if anything) to justify his treatment of her, while Hellboy also has the "monster in disguise" thing to fall back on.

Tarantino Films arent the normal and dont think they count cause he cares nothing bay imagine. Im talking about a Big MCU or Summer blockbuster film. Most big studio film wont do a story where a Man would be doing a violent scene to a women in well lets say a family type film setting cause lets be clear Marvel MCU is a family film and a Women Punching a Women has to happen because its only way Disney would have that scene pass the ok for a trailer.

Not obviously talking about Horror movie film or B action films where women or men in them get wrecked depending on the main character.
Im talking about in a summer or spring block buster where a whole family can go to see it context

It's about who's getting hit than who's doing the hitting. You're failing to ask why it's acceptable for Captain Marvel to hit an old lady on a bus. Is it because Captain Marvel is a woman? If Wonder Woman or Black Widow hit an old woman on a bus in a trailer, we'd be like- WTF?! I'd say that elder-abuse is just as unacceptable today as male brutality! It's because we know the old woman's a skrull that it's acceptable. The studio knows that fans are well-informed now and made the bold choice to put that in the trailer ... and I think that's marvel-lous.

If they base this character off of Carol Danvers and if they actually follow the entire comic-book history this character has gone through from the 70s on her backstory would make the most jaded moviegoers jaw just drop. Her life was so rough that it made Jessica Jones look like Candyland.

Except that "Shazam!" is a word uttered by Captain Marvel to change Billy Batson into an adult superhero (named Captain Marvel) and it's actually the name of an old wizard that gives Billy his Captain Marvel powers...
And the old wizard's name itself is an acronym that stands for the names of Greco-Roman gods (and one Old Testament biblical historical person for some reason).

I guess the bitterness over the lawsuits that took place in the 70s still stands.

The story behind it all is that Marvel created Captain Marvel in the 60s... then in 1972, DC licensed a character called Captain Marvel from Fawcett Comics, but because a character with such a name already exists, there was a big lawsuit and DC lost, meaning they had to release the actual comic under the title of "Shazam!"... but in said comic, the character himself was always referred to in dialogue as Captain Marvel.

I'm as big as a Marvel fan as there is yet Brie's baffling and divisive exclusionary statements recently has officially turned me off of this film. I've literally spent THOUSANDS on MCU movie tickets but I refuse to pay to see this one. WTF was Marvel thinking?

Maybe they were thinking that they don't need to waste any time on reactionary white male jackasses like the one in that video whose prefabricated complaints against Captain Marvel consist of vacuous nonsense like "she doesn't smile enough" or "she's a Mary Sue". If you were that much of a Marvel fanatic that you've spent quote-unquote thousands on movie tickets (which also begs the question of how you even managed to do that), then even this shouldn't stop you.

I find her comments a bit annoying, too, but not annoying enough to boycott the flick. Along with Tom Cruise and some other kind of odd personalities in Hollywood, I try to separate the films from the actors and their real world conduct.

I'm not exactly excited about this, but I feel like I should have more faith in Marvel; they're almost always at least enjoyable.

Exactly the same boat here. I'd probably not see it in theaters except I assume it's going to setup something important for Endgame.

I'm actually *super* excited for this one. I think it looks great.

I will be seeing it, but probably with a friend of mine from work, as my wife has taken a strong dislike to the character just from the trailers.

gandalf26 03-08-19 06:57 AM

CM getting slaughtered by audiences, another massive critic/audience disparity or are we blaming 4Chan again?

Reports that the mid credit scene is a big tie in with Endgame, think I'll you tube that.

What, did you really think the review-bombers would give up just because RT closed down pre-release ratings for a week? That's the problem with these goons - thanks to them, we'll never know for sure how much the user-based metric is an honest reflection of an audience consensus.

Blame it on the review bombers - those goons. Lmao.

Re: Captain Marvel

Can you give me a reason why I shouldn't at least consider them a factor?

gandalf26 03-08-19 09:53 AM

You will be able to tell based on the amount of reviews. If CM has a statistically high number of a audience reviews then sure you could conclude that it's getting review bombed, if however the amount of reviews is par for the course then the scores look legit.

Are there any other examples where a comic book movie has changed the sex of a main character?

I'm gonna skip this film.

That's not how that works at all, for a reasons both logistical and statistical.

Let's just stop drawing broad cultural conclusions from easily manipulated numbers we can't really verify. Especially since we have a lot of evidence that the formula is just each person asking themselves what they already thought and either being skeptical or credulous based on that.
