Movies That Make You Think

Anything from the Brave Little Toaster to David Lynch, I value movies that are intended for entertainment and allow you to check out for an hour or two. I don't believe that just because a movies that make you think that they are for snobs. Some people are entertained by a movie that makes them think. Movies like Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive, Momento, Inception, etc. Something with a twist that is easy to miss, a non linear plot, or you can tell me what kinds of movies make you think. I've mentioned a few. Some people will pass on this thread, but I've seen some members who might go for this kind of discussion.

I actually just got done watching Things to Come, French film starring Isabelle Huppert.

That's food for thought.

Lots of ideological debating, philosophical and marital perceptions being challenged.

Good movie.

Mindwalk - Available on you tube

A discussion between a scientist, a politician and a historian about how the modern view of the world is failing us, and that our thinking must evolve if we are to address the problems that are facing us. It is just dialog, and many would find it dull, but it does make you think.

2001: A Space Odyssey made me think about how small we are in the universe.
Fight Club made me think about commercialism.
Funny Games made me think about Hollywood troupes and how stimulating onscreen violence is.
Dr Strangelove made me think about the insanity of the Cold War.
The Deer Hunter made me think about how war ruins relationships and families.
Gone Girl made me think about bias on television news.
Mary and Max made me think about the loneliness many autistic people face.
Cachè made me think about how no one is safe.
American Beauty and Anomalisa made me think about how much life sucks.
Rope made me think about everyone's secret love for violence.
We Need to Talk About Kevin made me think about the influence a parent has on their child.
Super Size Me made me think about the fact that some people are so stupid they need a feature length movie to realise that eating the same food for 30 days straight is bad for you.
Phone Booth made me think about how good of an American accent Colin Farrel does.
Clerks and Following made me realise you don't need to be rich to made a good movie.

But most importantly...

Annie Hall made me think about turning off the TV!

The Man from Earth.
Copied straight from IMDB: An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he has a longer and stranger past than they can imagine.
Its basically a movie about a debate between a bunch of college professors inside a rural house. I sugest not watching any trailers or reading the quick synopsis that google gives about the movie since it spoils what they are debating about.
You can also watch it on youtube with pretty good quality, its an hour and a half.

Well, 2001: A Space Odyssey makes me think of what to have for dinner, and it makes me wonder how anyone can like it.

This movie was so strange, it stayed in my mind for a long time afterwards. Which I guess is thinking.

Someone actually pointed out a kind of thematic connectivity among recent Scarlett Johansson films, including Under the Skin.

The connection being that they're all, in one way or another, about a woman's relationship to her mind and body.

You got Her (2013) where she voiced an intangible, female A.I. in a relationship with a human and revolves around the difficulties of the relationship concluding with

her transcendence.

Under the Skin - an alien in the form of a woman uses her looks for sustainability (I think) and as a result comes head to head with gender norms, sexual awakening (of sorts) and even empathy for and, maybe, longing to become a part of humanity.

Lucy - through violation, a woman's physical reaction to chemicals enhances her mind,

concluding with her transcendence 🤔

Ghost in the Shell - a woman reborn in an artificial body tries to reconcile with her older self while dealing with possibility of losing/surrendering her own being to a male figure.

You could probably argue Age of Ultron fits in here as well (The Red Room).

Interesting to think about. I wonder if it's intentional.
