Congratulations on getting through the first part so quickly! Hopefully you saw some stuff you really liked. This time around I'm being more thoughtful in my selections and really trying to pick films that genuinely interest me.
Most of the films I picked were already in my watchlist, I think there were only two I never heard of that I had to do some research on. There were also a few films (2 I think) that I had already previously seen this month. Still being 2021, I didn’t see the harm in it.

I think he only watched 1 film from the main challenge (The one in green font), while the red ones are his picks that he has yet to watch. Right @BooBooKittyFock? Finishing the main challenge within a month would be crazy.

BooBooKittyFock 01-31-21 04:17 PM

@tacoma11

Saw quite a few of the recs already, but I’ve been wanting to see Short Term 12!

Thanks for the help.

Do I also post recs or is it too late?

Must have missed that. Here you are.

Feel free to offer recommendations. There is no deadline on it.

Yeah, only seen the ones in green.

The big country was a phenomenal film, one of my favorite western films I’ve seen to date!

Yeah, finishing the main challenge in a month would be crazy.

Some people around here can tell you how I feel about Short Term 12. I just love it to bits. And I know that some of that is because of my own professional and personal experiences, but I think it's really solid and while it has some flaws, none of them really put a dent in the film for me.

And please post recs! I haven't officially picked my "recommended" film yet.

I watched The Big Country for last years challenge (1950’s western category). Really enjoyed it as well.

Such a great film. I love films that use morality as one of its main topics.

BooBooKittyFock 01-31-21 04:41 PM

I’m not sure how many of you have already picked your recs, but here are mine.

I’ve seen all of these films and they are among, some of my all time favorites, if you have not seen them yet, I hope you will hold them close to your heart as I have:

Handmaiden
Eyes Wide Shut
Singin In the Rain
Come and See
The Big Country

I've seen all but Pixote, which coincidentally I started a few weeks ago but stopped because I could tell I wasn't in the right mood. Thanks!

And I LOVE Kung Fu Hustle. Sometimes when I'm down, I watch the clip with the knives and the snakes and I die laughing.

BooBooKittyFock 01-31-21 06:20 PM

Well @Takoma11 , you’ve probably seen a lot more films than I have (how many you up to?) I’m not sure I’ll be able to rec you one unless it was out of dumb luck or a film on my watchlist 🤣

You got a letterboxd?

The gaps in what I've seen lean more toward the mainstream. But I never mind when I've seen other peoples' recommendations. It gives you a sense of their taste (you know, to judge them with!) and sometimes you find that other people really like a film you do. Like, I am loving the Kung Fu Hustle Appreciation Society we've formed here.

Yeah, it’s a great film. I think I’ve seen it at least 3 times this year. Very rewatchable film. Has a little bit of everything I look for in a film. Just a good all around comedy!

An update...titles I've seen are in blue. Titles I plan on seeing are in red. A couple that are re-watches will be in bold. Those I'm unsure about will be italicized.

Edited as of April 1 (no fooling):

Main Challenge

Got one title in here so far with plans to continue to get more of them. Solved the director dilemma this morning, unexpectedly.

Nightmare Challenge

Takoma11 02-08-21 08:44 PM

FWIW, watching that many movies in a month really is a testament to how stressful the last 4 weeks have been. Like, I'm sort of proud and my competitive side is sort of satisfied (because if you put a list in front of me, we are now in a race, even if there is no prize and even if, like, it is NOT actually a race). I really did take care to pick movies I thought looked interesting and not just stuff that would check the different boxes.

But . . . dang. It mostly says a lot about how much time I spent on the couch working and how many nights I was so stressed out that I didn't want to go to bed and would watch 30 minutes of a movie instead.

I did watch most of the films on either Amazon, Hulu, Criterion, or HBO Go. And I would recommend almost all of them, if you are looking for something for one of the categories.

Love seeing Shoplifters on your list--I thought it was fabulous.

And of course I can't wait to see what you think of Short Term 12.

Well, finally found a film for The Locarno Film festival category. So now I have most of them saved with a movie to watch on normal mode. I’m not concerned over the four or five I hadn’t found one for yet, as it’s only February.

Don’t mind my rambling.

I read your review of The Last Circus when you first posted it and I've been wanting to add it to my WatchList.

Also, which version of Dorian Gray to you watch?

Got one title in here so far with plans to continue to get more of them. Solved the director dilemma this morning, unexpectedly.

Nightmare Challenge
Some great films on here, good call on choice of Actors (Paul Newman) You even have a couple I haven't seen. And a nice selection from Scorsese making for a broader experience of the man. Nice!

Yeah, I watched Hud last year for this challenge, and it was great.
I’ve previously seen The Verdict and Absence of Malice and enjoyed them both. The rest I’ve heard of and haven’t gotten to yet.

I've seen a few different ones and that's always remained as my favorite. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

I think I am going to use Locarno for Nightmare Mode. I wasn't familiar with it before seeing it mentioned in this challenge.

Same, it was the only festival I hadn’t heard of prior to this.
The others I’m familiar with.
The Czechoslovakia version of Baron Munchausen is available to stream on Amazon, so that should help you get started...I think?
It’s what I chose for my normal mode category.
For nightmare mode I’m sticking with the Oscars, but swapping out Ebert’s Great movies for Steven Jay Schneider’s 1001 movies.
Already found 10 to watch and have them saved.

You are allowed to pick from any winning category, so that broadens the selection. I haven't made my list for it yet.

I did Ebert's Great Movies last time. I'm not sure if I want to do them again or go with a different list.

Yeah, it’s a nice option to have this year. I still have a decent amount his Great list to see, so I could have chosen that, but the 1001 offered a wider selection by far and were more readily available just going by a casual look through Amazon.
Really looking forward to see what you select for Nightmare Mode.

I'm doing two categories at a time, and alternating between them. Then onto the next two categories.

So right now I am doing my 10 foreign language films and I have chosen the 70s as my decade. You can probably trace my path through all of this via the "Rate the Last Film . . . " thread. I might post my film list for each category as I finish them.

There are a lot of films that have been languishing in my netflix queue for, no joke, like 15 years. I am planning to use some of the categories (and especially the documentary category) to finally knock them off my watchlist.

That drives me insane. Often when I'm stuck for something to watch I'll deliberately head to the bottom of my watchlist, just to get something off of there once and for all. Which is absolutely the wrong reason to consume works of art, but it is what it is.

(Because simply deleting it from the watchlist isn't an option. What am I, a quitter?)

Ha! Exactly!

If it was interesting to me in my early 20s, clearly I have an obligation to watch it now!

Thanks.

With Scorsese, I'm trying to get as good a grasp on him as I can. Like some, I've heard of his reputation as a director of mob films. But I'm hoping in particular to be able to see some of those where he steps away from that like The King of Comedy and Silence.

Originally, I looked at Woody Allen (haven't seen any of his films). But I was dismayed by the lack of depth of his films available to stream. Maybe if I had HBO Max?

As for Newman, I haven't seen nearly enough of his films. I think the only ones of his that I've seen was Cool Hand Luke, Slap Shot, The Color of Money, Cars and Road to Perdition. You can thank the pre-list debate about Newman and Robert Redford for me to think about which one to focus on. Ultimately, chose Newman and it's possible I might update that list if I see something like The Sting or Butch Cassidy available.

I want to take advantage of the weather issues to knock some of those films out next week.

@Wyldesyde19 I got to say Youssef Chahine is probably the most interesting director choice I have seen anyone make in all the years the challenge has been running.

I was surprised by how solid Cairo Station was when I watched it last year, so if you find some of his films to be in the same level, let me know because I might want to check them out myself.

Yeah, I could have gone with either Herzog or Fukasaku, considering the amount of films available via streaming, but I went with Chahine because of the following:
1. Unfamiliarity with Egypt cinema
2. Cairo Station was indeed a pleasant surprise last year. The hope is that there might be another diamond amongst his filmography.
3. Apparently Chahine is a celebrated director, so I figured I’d dive deeper into his films.
4. Availability. Netflix has a lot of his films available to watch so it was an easy pick.

As for recommendations. Alexandria, Why? was pretty good. Start there.

I will check Alexandria out at some point.

As for Fukasaku, I had no idea who he was so I checked him out. Aside from Battle Royale, I see that the overwhelming majority of his films has less than 1000 votes on IMDb. Is he a celebrated director in Japan? Coming with no knowledge of his work and glancing at his filmography he seems like a 1-hit wonder.

Iroquois 02-13-21 01:07 PM

Re: 2021 Film Challenge

I think Battle Royale kind of blew up internationally for a variety of reasons (post-Columbine controversy about teenagers killing each other keeping it out of circulation at first, Tarantino calling himself a fan, the subsequent references to it in Kill Bill Vol. 1, general recency bias) and that didn't necessarily extend to the rest of his prolific career as a sturdy producer of yakuza films and the like.

I just think he’s isn’t as well known, is all. I haven’t seen any of his films yet mind you, of course. His Battles without Honor and humanity is a celebrated series in the Yakuza genre, where most of his work dealt with. He also did a few sci fi films, such as Virus (nominated for several awards including best picture in the Japan academy awards).
I think I maybe still do a deep dive of his available films anyways when time permits. As well as Herzog and Miike since Amazon has a lot of their films.
I seem to be favoring Asian films this year heh.

I did the same with Scorsese, my interest had been, originally, to his gangster films and found he a much broader scope of films which I grew impressed with. Some more than others but that's more of a personal thing than a critique.
Have not seen Silence so I'll be on the lookout for what you thought of it.

And regarding Newman there is still a number of his films I've yet to see. You mentioned The Color of Money, have you seen The Hustler? It's where his character originated from. A personal favorite of mine.
As is The Sting and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid from my childhood. Had them in my Top 5 of the recent All-Time Countdown. Love 'em both.

I have not seen The Hustler. Would love to add The Sting and Butch Cassidy personally.

I think availability is going to be a key in making sure I see the list through or if I need to make changes. Instead of trying to wipe out categories, I'm trying to chip away at them so I may be able to substitute them with time.

One goal I had heading into this list was to catch up with some of the titles that I missed on my school's Cinema International...films like Shoplifters, 4 Months, 3 Days and 2 Nights, and even '71 looked interesting on paper but whether it was due to work or school work, I missed out on them. But hopefully given a second chance, I'll dive headfirst into them.

As for Short Term 12, I should be done with it this weekend. From what I've seen so far, it looks like a winner in a year that's been kind of short on them.

Indeed, I have. Jack has what I think is a can't miss charismatic quality that keeps your eyes on the screen. And Ben Mendelsohn is pretty darned good as well.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times!
Watch 10 films released in the same decade (70s)

Enter the Dragon
Dark Star
Being There
Logan’s Run
Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Jabberwocky
Belladonna of Sadness
When a Stranger Calls
Equinox
36th Chamber of Shaolin

I thought that Jabberwocky was kind of a dud, but the rest I enjoyed to varying degrees.

Of these ten, I’ve heard of only eight. Never heard of Equinox nor Belladonna of Sadness.
Of the eight I’ve heard of, I’ve seen four. In order I’ve enjoyed them:
1. Being There
2. Enter the Dragon
3. Logan’s Run
4. Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

Good stuff.

I would give a moderate recommendation to both Equinox and Belladonna, both were like
films for me. As a horror fan you might enjoy Equinox more than the average viewer.

Documentary, my dear Watson
watch 10 documentaries
Class Action Park
In and Of Itself
White Rock
Team Foxcatcher
Scream, Queen!
Bright Leaves
Domestic Violence
Rejoice and Shout
Praying with Lior
Check It

Aside from Bright Leaves and Class Action Park (both of which were merely okay), I would highly recommend all of these.

The stuff that lists are made of
pick any one list from section G of the main challenge and watch 10 films in it (Schneider’s 1001 Movies)
Now Voyager
The Lady Eve
Blackmail
The American Friend
Incredible Shrinking Man
Caravaggio
Ladykillers
Black Sunday
42nd Street
Viy

I still need to write up a few of these. I liked or really liked all of them. Special hat tip to Incredible Shrinking Man, Caravaggio, and Black Sunday.

My precious...awards
pick any one list from section C of the main challenge and watch 10 films in it (2020 Oscar Winners)

  1. Tenet (2020)
  2. Soul (2020)
  3. Nomadland (2020)
  4. Trial of the Chicago Seven (2020)
  5. Ma Rainy's Black Bottom (2020)
  6. Time (2020)
  7. Judas and the Black Mesiah (2020)
  8. One Night in Miami (2020)
  9. Sound of Metal(2020)
  10. Another Road (2020)
Now obviouslythe Oscars won't happen until April 25th with the nominations Monday, and I'll have to watch more nominated films but it looks like these are the Oscar winners

Iroquois 03-10-21 10:04 AM

Re: 2021 Film Challenge

But it doesn't have to be 2020's Oscar winners, it can be Oscar winners from any point in history. The odds of all ten of those films winning are not so high as to be certain (even going off Globes wins as a predictor, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Sound of Metal both competed for Best Actor - Drama and the former beat the latter so at least one of them will probably lose if they are only competing against one another).

I know it doesn't have to be but I'm watching the Oscar films so might as well keep track of them.

We'll see what happens with the categories but my belief is

Nomadland(Zhao)
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom(Boseman)
Judas and the Black Mesiah (Kaluuya)
Sound of Metal(Sound)
Trial of the Chicago Seven (Sorkin)
Soul (Animated)
Time (Documentary)
One Night in Miami (Song)
Tenet (Visual Effects)
Another Road (Foreign)

You likely aren't going to see a film win 7-8 Oscars so it'll spread out, I've got two categories that I haven't slotted in yet.

Supporting Actress, and Actress with the belief(films I haven't seen yet are in bold but I'm going to see them)...

Best Actress
Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)
Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom)
McDormand (Nomadland)
Day (United States vs Billie Holiday)
Kirby (Pieces of a Woman)

Best Supporting Actress
Olivia Coleman (Father)
Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari)
Amanda Seyfried (Mank)
Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy)
Maria Bakalova (Borat 2)

Now could Sound of Metal lose out on Sound and thus not get any Oscars...sure so I pull it off and replace it with Mank. Soul loses to Wolfwalkers...well I'm going to watch that one anyways..so I just move it over to the animated list.

I'd never seen ANY Kurosawa film until last month, so these are all first-timers. SS is indeed a monster of a film, shortest 3.5 hours of my life.

One film that I never hear about is One Wonderful Sunday, which I absolutely loved. I recommend it if you haven't seen it.

I’ve rated every film and reviewed a few, I’ll put it all in the final product

The Wolf House*
Spies in Disguise
Happily N’Ever After
Everybody Rides the Carousel*
Kirikou and the Men and Women*
To Your Last Death
The Croods*
Afro Samurai Resurrection*
Hey Arnold: The Movie*
Loving Vincent*

Much more of a mixed bag here.

I'd recommend the starred ones, though only The Wolf House, Kirikou and Loving Vincent really did a lot for me.

Happily N'Ever After and To Your Last Death I would actively avoid.

Round up the usual suspects
watch 10 films from the same genre (horror)

Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker
Madhouse
The Devils
The Dead Center
The Villains
Possessor
Grandmother’s House
Next of Kin
Possum
Dead & Buried

Since horror is a pretty broad genre, this time I decided to watch 10 films whose titles and/or posters I really liked.

Despite this superficial approach, there was only really one dud in the bunch, The Dead Center.

My favorites were definitely Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker, The Devils, Possessor, Next of Kin, Possum, and Dead and Buried

Yeah, I watched it on YouTube and paused it constantly to use Google Translate to figure out what the title cards were saying.

I will say that even if you didn't follow the title cards, you could still probably really enjoy the film.

Movie Posters really do the trick for me. I've found all kinds of favorites that way throughout my life. It varies a little when researching on IMDb, where I meander through deeper aspects, but a movie poster can, will and does "speak" to me.

The youtube version I've found is broken into 3 parts with a CC option for English subtitles. It also has different colored monochrome along with B&W depending on the scene. They appear like really good copies as well.
Also, though obvious, be sure to click on link on the video to take you TO Youtube to view it.

That was the two final choices that I got down to. Depending on how much I enjoy J'accuse I just might check out Dixième.

Prefer to be different films. That’s the point of the nightmare challenge.

Are The Outsiders and/or Rumble Fish considered "80s coming-of-age films"? I've never seen either of them.

How soon is now?
watch 10 films released in 2021
Moxie
Map of Tiny Perfect Things
Sentinelle
Tina
Bliss
Kid90
Black Art: In the Absence of Light
Stallone: Frank, That Is
Yes Day
Blood Moon

More of a mixed bag. I am, how you say, very cheap. So many 2021 releases that interest me I just can't bring myself to shell out $6 for to rent.

I would recommend Moxie, Tina, Kid90 and Black Art. The best was easily Tina.

None of them were bad, just mediocre.

Some really great films here, and after checking out Colt Is My Passport, I do believe, like with a few previous films from your list, I'll be adding that one to mine.
The beauty of it was that I had been waiting for a good "gangster" film that I HAVEN'T seen, and this so wonderfully fits the bill.
THANK YOU!

If you’re looking for a good Yakuza (don’t call us gangsters) film, might I suggest Battles Without Honor and Humanity? Specifically the first one, although the second one is decent as well.
