I'm just not in the mood for movies right now

Hello all,

this may seem like a fairly pointless idea for a thread, but I've not watched a film for over a week now; something is definitely wrong.

I don't know what it is lately but after I get home of an evening, work out, shower, make dinner, then finally relax; I just don't seem to have the energy to watch a film.

Instead I listen to music, or just bum around aimlessly on MoFo talking about films instead of watching them.

What I'd like to know is, do other MoFo'ers experience this, and how often?

It's frustrating because I've got lots of unseen DVD's on my shelf, but lack the motivation to put one in the player and concentrate for a couple of hours.

I'm sure it's just a phase; I go through the same thing with music occasionally, but still...

I'd appreciate your thoughts, advice and experiences (if any) regarding this.

I've had that feeling before. I rented No Country For Old Men once, but when I got home I just didn't feel like watching it. I actually ended up returning it without having seen it.

This has certainly happened to me. In my case, it's usually work-related: either I've been doing a lot of work and feel like stopping to watch movies would be unproductive, or else I have a lot left to do and can't sit still for the same reason.

Ditto if I have too many movies to watch; they start to feel like chores. And something about the fact that you can't give a movie your genuine attention while doing much of anything else adds to it, as well. It's easy to feel "trapped."

So, it's definitely not just you, though your reasons and any possible solution might be specific to you. In my case I find that I can sort of break the ice by watching something funny or goofy, or a more basely interesting film. Sometimes watching an old favorite does the trick. After something like that, I'm usually ready to watch other things, too.

Hope this helps a bit. :)

Sure, all the time. I also go through it with almost every hobby I have. Sometimes it's just life getting in the way and sometimes you just need a break or lose interest for awhile.

I'd just roll with it for now. If you try to push yourself into doing something you don't really want to do because you feel like you should want to, you'll probably just end up prolonging what ever it is that's going on.

Hopefully this will happen to you too, but whenever I seem to go through a "movie dry spell" I seem to want to watch everything and anything after it's over.

I think you've got something there. I often find it easy to gee myself up for a mindless popcorn flick, which subsequently wets my appetite for something a little more substantial. Perhaps I should go to the cinema and see the new Terminator flick (even though it looks crap). No. Or maybe the new Raimi flick (even though I'm kinda' tired of horror films). No.

Hmmm decision decisions...

Funny...I keep thinking of Forrest Gump for some reason...I love that movie...

Aye man, i'm with you on that one. Can't bring myself to use up half my spare time watching a film. Doesn't help i'm burning through The Wire at the moment but it's definitely happened a few times. Subtitled films are taking a lot effort for me to watch these days, i'll watch a good one and get in the mood for more but end up wanting the satisfaction of watching a popcorn flick or something i know what i'm getting from

That's me for the last 10 years. :(

I used to watch a film every day or two, now I probably watch about 20 a year. That's why I've got about two hundred films I've yet to see. I'm like a drug addict that keeps buying, but has stopped using though, one day, I hope to become an addict again. :)

I'm just a tad anti-social so if I'm not reading a bunch of books one after another for months I'm watching ten films a week.

Stick in a copy of Solyaris (1972) and you'll be back to normal in no time. 165 minutes to be exact.

Unless you dont like that movie, if so ... I hate you :D

People always need breaks from doing things they love, that time off allows us to figure out why we loved that certain thing in the fist place. I suppose this advice doesnt really count when aplied to two individuals like a relationship - although it could work, maybe this is why i'm newly single - but with art I'm sure it's correct ... it might be correct ... maybe it's correct ... who knows ...

Anyway, I'm sure once you actually find the time to sit down and watch something good again you'll ask yourself why you ever left the sofa.

And if not, kick back, put on the Miles Davis and read.

You may not believe this but I may go for a week without watching a movie. Between work, home, the Dodgers and the Lakers (for now), I have to hold up, especially since Sarah wants to watch every movie I watch. Now that she's graduating, she'll probably have more free time.

Wow, Tarkovsky's Solaris is about the last film I'd tell somebody to watch to get back into movies. And yes, I watched it three times in less than a week.

Dude, this place is almost worse than drugs UF. Seriously. No chance of losing your life though... which I really like. I sometimes go several days without watching a flick because I spend so much time online. I am seriously addicted to the internet. And its not even porn, which may make me weird, but it's true. :D

Anywho. I wouldn't sweat it buddy, you may just need a little comfort food. I saw you mention Gump. Maybe throw that on in a day or so and I bet you'll be off to the races. It still amazes me how often I watch flicks from my top 100 and how much they lift my spirits. Maybe give one of those a go when you feel like it.

Perhaps you just need some cinematic viagra. Watch something that you never would usually watch or watch a beloved favorite... or take a break for a bit. it'll come back, of that I'm certain.

I'm behind too actually... too much MMA action going on right now.

Dont worry Used Future... I'm going through the same thing.

7thson 06-12-09 12:13 AM

I am addicted to stories. It can be a movie or a book or a radio show, etc.... Usually the only reason I care not to pop in a flick is because my eyes are tired from looking at a screen all day. Music is a great healer for me. I can listen to some Floyd for awhile and rest my eyes and relax - and when I am done I need me some cinema. :)

How about Roger Water's Amused to Death? That one can transport you!

Used Future 06-12-09 04:17 PM

Thanks for the great response folks...

I'm going to slap in Forrest Gump this Sunday afternoon; that's one film I never get tired of:)

P.S. I like Tarkovsky's Solaris alot, but I've got to go with mark; it's the last film I'd want to watch
right now.

This happens to be sometimes. What I find is if I can get the film into the DVD player, the feeling vanishes almost as soon as I start watching. Netflix etc. will start to collect on my table, and like Yoda said, I will start to think of them as thing I "have to get to soon", so a little switch in my head gets triggered making feel like it's indeed a chore. It isn't though...I just think it is for a few minutes. ;)

Definitely. Especially heavy films (The Pianist) or longer ones (uh, The Pianist). Even if I think they're good, the time commitment scares me off from starting sometimes.
