Adults watching 'kids' movies?
So I am 17, and most of the movies I see in theaters are animated movies. Like Despicable Me, Finding Dory, and even Paddington. However, I do still watch movies targeted towards an older audience, like Hunger Games, Logan, and other PG13/R movies.
Does anyone think it's a problem that over teens and adults still enjoy movies targeted for a younger audience. Personally, I think it doesn't matter what you watch, as long as you are interested in it and enjoy those types of movies. |
Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
No it doesn't matter, watch what you want and ignore those from earlier.

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
There's nothing wrong with watching what you enjoy

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
Hellz no. I still watch kids' movies. Watch what you like. There's enough bad stuff in the world today so if you can have some fun watching movies on your own or with your friends and parents then go right ahead.

Society these days is very focused on explicit content, and in movies at can sometimes be hard to watch. Even adults may be uncomfortable with it, so kids movies are great. Yes, they can still contain jokes that only adults will understand, but they're minor. |

Yes, they can still contain jokes that only adults will understand, but they're minor. Last animated family movie I saw was Secret Life of Pets. I;m an animal lover and pet owner so found this to be pretty cute escapism, but some adults were complaining it wasnt suitable for children because there are snakes in it (what the hell and I'm terrified of snakes but they do exist) and a bunny made a joke about putting his owner in a blender which I thought was hilarious. I didnt get the faux outrage. I was addicted to bugs bunny when I was a kid and still watch it if it comes on tv, and that's a lot more violent, but it also turned me onto classical music from an early age. |
Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
Here are some other family movies my husband and I have enjoyed together and we didnt feel the need to watch them with little kids to justify going to see movies made for kids.

Personally, I do not watch kids' TV or movies. I have no desire to watch anything childish. I also do not care for animated movies of any kind.
If other people enjoy them, that's fine. |

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
My top 100 is packed with animated movies, most of which are targeted to children. I also have *Batteries Not Included and The Sandlot in my list. I'm 36.
Watch whatever appeals to you. To hell with what anybody else thinks. |

You guys seem to like a lot of my favorites! I love Chicken Run, all of the Narnia films, Where The Wild Things Are, The Incredibles, and Owls of Gahoole!

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
No there is nothing wrong with it. Not unless you got to the kids movies wearing a trench coat in a windowless van with a bag of lollipops asking kids to help you find your lost puppy.
But if you just did animated movie, then f**k it. Like what ya like. |

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
Well, the problem I have with kids movies is that they tend to be conservative and lack any sort of artistic innovation. The reason is that when they make a kids movie, Western movie directors tend to dumb down the movie purposefully for the audience since they assume children are more stupid than adults (which is, actually, usually the inverse: people between the ages of 10 to 17 are smarter on average than adults).
However, there are many exceptions to this rule. Here is a list of some of my top kids movies: http://www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/movi...88_p_v8_au.jpg https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....VL._SX342_.jpg https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....AL._SX342_.jpg https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....0,1200_AL_.jpg https://japaneseculturereflectionsbl...55-1.jpg?w=474 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...6Alexander.jpg Notice that most good kids movies are Japanese. The reason is that Japanese people do not dumb down their kids entertainment. Also, always watch movies in their original language. |
Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
Seven Samurai is a kids movie?
And didn't you type like a 100 thousand words against people who called stuff like Totoro and Spirited Away "kids films"? Or maybe that was a joke, it's late here and i've got a headache, forgive me. |

Just watch whatever makes you happy, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. :) |

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
It's not something I personally enjoy and it's not something I necessarily understand. My parents have friends who are also in their 60's and they went to Inside Out, Minions, etc. I just don't know how those kind of movies could be stimulating for an adult, but nobody can tell you what you can and can't watch, except maybe China.

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
Definitely not a problem. I may have kids, but there are times when I have to enjoy a kids movie myself now and again.

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
They may be targeted for a younger audience, but it's a fallacy to say movies such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Despicable Me, The Incredibles, the Wallace & Gromit movies, Trolls, Shrek (et al), Ice Age, etc are just for children. There's too much adult themed humor in them! I'm over 40 and I laugh my @$$ off!! And, really, just because it's animation, doesn't mean it's for children -- case in point: Watership Down, Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, Futurama, Rick and Morty, Fritz The Cat...

Re: Adults watching 'kids' movies?
It's good no one said animation is only for children then.

I went through a phase where I had no room for "kids" films. But I grew out of it. Its nice to be old and open minded. I no longer feel the need to prejudge based on category. In fact, as an adult I think I enjoyed The Secret Garden and A Little Princess more than my step daughters did. lol. And someone mentioned Spirited Away which is simply a classic.

Also, having been a fan of Doctor Who, you get that experience of the target audience vacillating over 50 years. Different eras of the programme can feel like they're aimed at young kids, teenagers or adults – and sometimes it can be like that even in the same story :). |

But no, there is nothing wrong with watching kids movies. I watch Teletubbies from time to time, after all.

I really dont know what you hope to achieve with this constant ridicule of other people's taste, Cyn. You even did it in Gideon's list. WTF? Get a new hobby.

Many "family" movies include humour and references which only adults will understand. A lot goes into these movies (if they're done well). I'm in my 40s and I watch whatever catches my interest, whether adult or family - I make no distinction.
