Criterion sale

The Barnes and Noble 50% off Criterion sale started today, should run about 3 weeks, time to load up!

Nausicaä 07-09-13 08:19 PM

Re: Criterion sale

Waa, forgot about this! thanks for the reminder.

OMEGA5 07-09-13 08:23 PM

Re: Criterion sale

I already made my first haul. The Shoah BR for $36 :) a copy of the just OOP Howards End, as well as Sansho the Bailiff and Monsieur Verdoux all BR. Going to hit up a different store after work tomorrow.

Nausicaä 07-10-13 09:23 AM

Re: Criterion sale

Monsieur Verdoux is one I'm thinking of going for.

Have to order them all separately to get rid of the customs risk.

HitchFan97 07-10-13 01:21 PM

Re: Criterion sale

And now that I just got a job, I'll actually have money for this! :D

OMEGA5 07-10-13 05:01 PM

Re: Criterion sale

I love these sales. 3 more today with a $5 off $50 coupon got them for $52.53 :)

The Gold Rush
Harakiri
The Last Days of Disco

Will be getting more on Saturday and then another round on Tuesday when Lord of the Flies comes out on Blu.

Nausicaä 07-11-13 05:30 PM

Re: Criterion sale

My first Blu-ray order from the sale in America:

http://img2.imagesbn.com/p/715515085...2_s260x420.JPG

Where I shop online it's the cheapest I've found it brand new with postage costs added on. It's gone £1 over the customs limit but they are suppose to be customs friendly and my Three Colours Trilogy box set got through safe and sound last year from Barnes & Noble.

I'm happy with the buy. :D

Nausicaä 07-11-13 05:37 PM

Re: Criterion sale

I'm thinking of getting Z next but it's only available on DVD from Criterion, does anyone have any idea if this is going to get a Blu-ray release anytime soon?

Nausicaä 07-11-13 07:04 PM

Re: Criterion sale

I'm just going to go for Z but will order it tomorrow. But ordered a second one tonight but it's a DVD, not out in a Blu-ray edition yet. Missing:

@rauldc14, I'm getting married in December, you've just got to find a future wife who wants a cheap wedding too, so you can buy more movies! (and I'm Scottish so I am one cheap SOB!)

Re: Criterion sale

Nice pick ups there. I got Medium Cool a few weeks ago, that is an interesting movie, especially how it was made, enjoy!

I picked up 3 this morning:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51uoo9BCI4L.jpg
http://resources01.deep.weblinc.com/...418.zoom.1.jpg
http://www.theblurayblog.com/wp-cont...ox_348x490.jpg

That same store has a copy of the OOP Leon Morin, Priest, which I will probably grab to resell after the sale.

Going to be near another B&N after we go see Pacific Rim this afternoon, so will be making one more buy today, not sure what yet.

OMEGA5 07-13-13 08:46 PM

Re: Criterion sale

one more after the movie:

The Leopard BR, another for $15 and change :)

LateRegistration 07-15-13 09:46 PM

Thanks for the heads up. My wallet does not thank you though. :p

I picked up In The Mood For Love, Wings Of Desire, and Monsieur Verdoux on blu-ray. There were a few others that I wanted, like Fear And Loathing, and Belle de Jour, but I wanted to take advantage of the sale as much as possible, so I got the more pricey on the top of my list. I need a lot more of these releases, on blu ray, I only have two others (Being John Malkovich, and Night Of The Hunter) and only two on DVD (Life Aquatic, and The Royal Tenenbaums.) I might get a few more when I get my next paycheck though.

OMEGA5 07-15-13 11:28 PM

Re: Criterion sale

All good choices! I personally would have gone for Fear and Loathing(one of my personal favs and one of my first Criterions!).

Nonetheless that is a good start to your collection. Night of the Hunter is classic, I really enjoy that one, and I am a huge Wes Anderson fan, so I have all those too!

Additionally, here is a link to the coupons I have been referring to throughout this thread: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargain...-part-2-a.html

You need to be B&N member to use them(That they do check, plus it's an extra 10% off), and "technically" these are for new members only and one time use only, but I have been using them for several sales and repeatedly with no issues. Just click on the spoilers tab in the thread and print them off!

Going in for 3 more tomorrow. Lord of the Flies on BR and two others I'm not sure of which yet though.

HitchFan97 07-16-13 01:12 AM

Re: Criterion sale

Ended up picking up Belle de Jour and Short Cuts. Paris, Texas was out of stock, which made my decision easier seeing as I wanted to limit myself to two :p

OMEGA5 07-16-13 07:23 PM

Re: Criterion sale

Paris, Texas is an excellent movie.

Got three more blus today:

Lord of the Flies
Metropolitan

Goes through the end of July. Criterions are usually $30-40 each, so now it's more like $15-20.

OMEGA5 07-18-13 04:56 PM

rauldc14 07-19-13 06:13 PM

Re: Criterion sale

Well, I went and after deliberating I cut it down to 8 possible buys:

-Night of the Hunter
-The Thin Red Line
-Short Cuts
-12 Angry Men
-Charade
-Ace in the Hole
-The Gold Rush
-The Lady Vanishes

any predictions what I went with?

OMEGA5 07-19-13 10:44 PM

Night of the Hunter - yes!
The Thin Red Line - F yes! One of my all time favorites.
Short Cuts - never seen it
12 Angry Men - yes. A classic
Charade - yes! Watched it last week, a lot of fun. Cary Grant is great in it.
Ace in the Hole - never seen it
The Gold Rush - Chaplin, but of course!
The Lady Vanishes - Definitely, early Hitchcock, and very funny!

All good choices, enjoy!

FWIW - The Thin Red Line is my favorite Criterion edition by far. The blu-ray transfer is phenomenal.

rauldc14 07-19-13 11:05 PM

Re: Criterion sale

I forgot to put that I only got two, I went with The Thin Red Line and Charade. Only wish I could have afforded them all. Haven't seen either that I've bought yet.

OMEGA5 07-19-13 11:13 PM

I'm glad you went with The Thin Red Line, both are good choices though!

For those in Britain like me, Amazon.com have some of the Criterion films up for the same price now, $19.99. It should be cheaper than Barnes and Noble because I believe Amazon have cheaper shipping prices(only about £2 difference but it helps), oh and faster delivery from my experience.

So worth checking out.

For the same price but cheaper with lower postage, I just ordered this from Amazon:

Got this yesterday.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-pr...0_original.jpg

Had to get at least one more before the sale was over. I was really hoping My Own Private Idaho was cheap enough, because I really want to rewatch it, and all of the other goodies, but it was the same amount as a standard Criterion blu ray (because of the hefty packaging,) and you can buy it used for a significantly cheaper amount online. Oh well! :dizzy:

Pussy Galore 07-27-13 04:41 PM

Re: Criterion sale

Criterion is a lot cheaper in the US than in Canada. Here each Blu Ray are more than 30$. I prefer buying 3 movies than 1 for that price.

I think they're ridiculously priced over here, I agree with you. For me, B&N is the only place to buy them in store, and they're usually around forty dollars just for a standard release, which I don't know if I could ever do.

You can always get them online, some for even cheaper than the sale prices at B&N, but I just usually wait until these things until I actually buy them anyways. They seem to only happens a few times a year, and it gives me an excuse to go hog wild on them at one time. :yup:

OMEGA5 07-27-13 07:35 PM

Re: Criterion sale

Are they $30 originally in Canada or is that a sale price? Do you have B&N in Canada? Sorry if that seems like a stupid question.

I picked up 3 more today:

Gomorrah
La Haine
and Island of Lost Souls

That brings my take to 25 during the sale and I am done!

The Criterion release for The Devil's Backbone is fantastic BTW. It looks and sounds pretty damn good! So happy they released that, I just wish the book were a bit bigger, but that's ok the on-disc supplements are quite hefty!

I almost always get them from Amazon or on eBay. And I go crazy during the Half off sales at B&N as I have a link for the coupons plus my membership discount and my convenient location of having access to 5 different stores within a few minutes of my work and home. The $40 regular price is absolutely ridiculous no matter how great a movie it is, although I am an idiot that spent waaaay too much on a copy of The Third Man and less but also too much on a copy of Pierrot Le Fou. I also have access to 3 used movie stores around here and have been lucky enough to find some very cheap ($15 for Army of Shadows about a month before it went OOP!), or waited until it sat on the shelf for a few months and talked them into lowering the price to move it.

Edit for clarity: I buy them in groups of 3 to get the price over $50 so I can use the B&N $5 off $50 coupon plus my 10% member discount I pay $17.48 for each movie with tax in-store, which is a great price for a brand new blu-ray.

This happened to me before, don't remember which film, but the date on which your order was placed is what counts. And if not, just ask for a refund and buy it again in the November sale.

The Tati box set is awesome. If you like westerns this week had a double with The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind(both have Jack Nicholson). What genres interest you most?

I've grabbed 12 titles this week already. I'm less than 100 from owning all the blu-ray releases.

I liked Down By Law, which I blind bought.

Very nice looking black and white film from the '80s starring Tom Waits (winner of Folk Song Tournament). I'd do a commentary for it with you. About three guys who escape from prison and are on the run. I hear it's kinda like O Brother Where Art Thou? But without the music.

For those in Britain who don't know yet, starting in April the Criterion collection will launch in Britain/Region B. At the moment we are getting Macbeth, Grey Gardens, Speedy, Tootsie, Only Angels Have Wings, and It Happened One Night. Finally! :)

Does anyone know when the July sale actually starts? There's a few I for sure want.

Friend in the US is going to send me Dr. Strangelove. A favorite I for some reason didn't think of getting a Criterion version of.

Just bought Fantastic Planet and My Darling Clementine. It was so hard to hold back buying others.

Ones I nearly scooped: The Killers (off Sean's rec), Eraserhead, Autumn Sonata, Palm Beach Story (looked interesting) and L'Avventura

I hope you like The Killers, I'm excited for my second watch. Surprised you didn't go with Cries&Whispers.
