The MoFo Top 100 of the 1970s: Countdown

http://i.imgur.com/ixe37dE.png
A long time ago, it was a glorious age in the cinematic universe. The 1970s is considered by many film fanatics to be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, decades of the medium that we love, both commercially and artistically. Faced with the impossible task of choosing favorites from among favorites, determining the very best of the very best, and culling legends from legends, many Movie Forums members did their level best to sort through it all, to filter that vibrant bounty through their individual tastes and sensibilities, and rank it in something as insufficient but challenging as a top twenty-five list. Here, now, are their collective choices for the best and/or favorite films of the decade. THIS is the thread where the list was announced, if anybody needs to toggle back to it for reference sake.

Ninety-Nine (99) MoFos found this an offer they couldn't refuse and submitted ballots, and I thank each and every one of you...yes, even Sexy Celebrity. Obviously this exercise is beyond futile without your support, and so many of you came out to play. Who are all ya all...?

http://i.imgur.com/gxLQiPC.png
7thson, Aniko, Austruck, bluedeed, BlueLion, Brother Blue, BrowningIdentity, Callum, Camo, Captain Spaulding, Christine, Citizen Rules, Cobpyth, cricket, dadgumbah, Daniel M, Deadite, Derek Vinyard, Ðèstîñy, donniedarko, earlsmoviepicks, edarsenal, Frightened Inmate No. 2, gajughead, gandalf25, gbgoodies, Gideon58, Godoggo, Golgot, Guaporense, The Gunslinger45, Harry Lime, Hit Girl, HitchFan97, Hitchcockian, Holden Pike, honeykid, iluv2viddyfilms, IrishSansRed, Jack1, jal90, JayDee, jiraffejustin, jrs, Kaplan, -KhaN-, linespalsy, Lucas, mark f, meatwadsprite, mikeython1, Mingusings, Miss Vicky, mojofilter, Monkeypunch, moviefan1996, Mr.Minio, Mr.Sparkle, Nausicaä, Nemanja, n3wt, Norman Desmond, nostromo87, OMEGA5, Peter Vincent, Powdered Water, Pussy Galore, Pyro Tramp, rauldc14, Rhys, The Rodent, the samoan lawyer, SamsoniteDelilah, Sane, sarah f, The Sci-Fi Slob, séance, Sedai, Sexy Celebrity, Shadow, Sinny McGuffins, Skepsis93, Swan, syj, Tacitus, teeter_g, Thursday Next, TokeZa, TONGO, Tyler1, TylerDurden99, Upton, The Usual Suspect, WBadger, weeman, wintertriangles, Yasashii, Yoda, and Zotis

Special thanks to Skepsis93 for being there for questions, some of them dumb, and most of all for providing such a kick-ass template and high bar to aim for with his Top 100 of the 1980s list. To Daniel M for his magical spreadsheet with its movie-counting formula making this task at all do-able, and for patiently explaining to this particular Luddite how to use it. And of course to Yoda for his input and for keeping up such a wonderful virtual sandbox for all of us cinematic idiots to gripe and gush at each other in, over movies and whatever other nonsense tickles our fancies.

For those late to the party, films received one to twenty-five points, depending on its place on each MoFo's numbered ballot. Four hundred and twenty-seven different films received votes, these are the films with the highest point totals, revealed from number one hundred on down to numero uno. Ties are broken by which film appeared on more ballots. Two titles will be revealed per day, until we reach the top ten. Please still do not publicly reveal all of your personal choices until the entire list has been presented, but otherwise feel free to remark where certain films were on your ballot, as they come up. Of course chat up the list as we go, and speculate all the live long day.

Now...let's go the distance!

.

I like Logan's Run. I don't love it but I like it. I've been meaning to watch The Omen for a while mainly for this countdown, but also for added Gregory Peck.

Haven't seen Logan's Run. I like The Omen well enough but it was never in consideration for my list, i did expect it to be 10-15 spots higher though. Agreed with Slob on the layout.

Also thanks for taking the time to do this Holden :)

aaaaaand.... seen neither. But those are two expected-ish entries. Maybe we won't be seeing any (or as many) WTF appearances (looking at you, Visitor to a Museum and Rocky IV) this time around, given the insane amount of lists that were submitted?

mark f 07-16-14 04:00 PM

1976 is already represented by two! I didn't vote for them, but they're fun mainstream movies, although I think The Omen is the better of the two. I saw LR once at the theatre, but I saw The Omen with my bro at a sneak preview on 6-6-76 and about five times total at the theatre.

I assumed that was just 2/3 art house buffs putting it near the top of their list. But yeh, lots of films from the Eighties I don't think would stand a chance getting on this.

Not seen either of them too. Bit of a disappointment but I'm not too bothered as both look interesting, been wanting to see The Omen for a while, seems like a good horror that everyone around here likes.

The 80's and 90's lists began with yawns for me. Here we start with two really good flicks! Logan's Run almost made my top 25.

Also, 2 for 2 so far.

It was. This time 'round, I figure 99 lists is enough to eradicate that sort of thing, meaning a film has to appeal to broader range of people to get a spot, even at the lower end. Can't decide if I like that or not.

Yeah you're right, I've done my list fairly and not tactically, and if everyone has, I think it means a fairer representation of the tastes on here, so will probably be a good thing.

cricket 07-16-14 04:07 PM

All the movies I watched to prepare for this, and I missed the very first one. Logan's Run is a movie I wanted to see, but I didn't really think it was a contender. I'm going to try to watch it tonight.

Three months ago, The Omen was a lock for my list, but I didn't end up voting for it. I saw it multiple times at the movies when it came out, and I had many nightmares because of it. It's easily one of my all time favorite horror movies. Glad it made it.

As you can see, both of these first two films were tied, as far as points. This happened thirteen times throughout the entire list, including once in the top ten! That's how close these races were. Ties are broken first by whichever had the most votes. In the case of our #100 choice, we actually had to go deeper.

http://www.movieforums.com/community...1&d=1405537801

After ninety-nine ballots, there were four titles that had accumulated sixty-four points, but only two slots to fill. The Omen appeared on seven different ballots, so it became the #99 title, leaving a three-way tie for the #100 spot. I discovered it was that much more of a tie, seeing as all three of the films appeared on five ballots, each. The second level of tie breaking then becomes which movie had the single highest vote, much like determining the higher flush in a hand of poker. The three remaining films with sixty-four points were Logan's Run, Murder by Death, and Coffy. The highest numbered vote Coffy received was a ninth-place, Murder by Death a seventh-place vote, and one of the five MoFos who had Logan's Run on their ballot had it as their sixth overall choice. That broke the tie, and just got Logan into the Top One Hundred, spared from Carousel once again!

I LOVE the level of effort you're putting into this, Holden. Respect!

Anyway, I haven't seen the first two entries yet. I'm kind of in a sci-fi mood as of late (I've been reading some of Isaac Asimov's sci-fi novels and short stories while being in Austria, Italy and Germany), so I think I might watch Logan's Run when I get back home, just so I can comment on it a little bit in this thread. The Omen also seems interesting and I'll definitely watch that one in the future.

Great start! I like the fact that I haven't seen any of these two films yet.

Thanks. It has been fun.

And yes, if anybody is wondering, I made that poster on the first page myself. Cobbled from classic '70s movie posters, obviously. I even did it the old fashioned way, as in scissors and glue. Because, you know, I'm insane.

For any conspiracy theorists (Hi, Sexy!), I assembled this poster on the day that The Shining was revealed to be the number one choice on the MoFo Top 100 of the 1980s list, back on March 11th. So not a single ballot had been cast, not even my own. There are no clues there for any film's placement on the list, nor even if it made it at all. I did make a key for it, if you kids want to have fun naming all twenty-eight of the films featured on my 'lil decoupage? :)

Seems super easy to me, but then I made it. Plus, I'm me.

Yes, I have. ;)
I wanted to make the list of one-pointers this time and Farewell, My Lovely was the perfect candidate for that. It's sort of a reboot of the classic noir genre as it was done in the '40s... but this time with a rich color palette in stead of shadowy black and white! I already reviewed it in my thread, but I thought this was a great way to give it some extra attention around here.

damm. Coffy is good fun, was my #15. looks like i should've moved it up !

And I already revealed these in another thread, but here they are again. These are the titles that received exactly one point, and only one point. Sixteen movies that were somebody's number twenty-five choice...and that was it. They missed the cut by a lot. :D

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
The Concert for Bangladesh
The Crazies
Diamonds Are Forever
Every Which Way But Loose
Farewell, My Lovely
Fat City
The Fury
Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo
La Grande Bouffe
The Lords of Flatbush
Love at First Bite
Meatballs
Robin & Marian
Summer City
A Touch of Zen

And in case you haven't tried it yet, the IMDb and Wikipedia button under each title on the list will automatically take you to the corresponding pages.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 1970s: Countdown

I know them all on the poster except for the one in bottom left with the guys face on the clock? Actually it's probably Dog Day Afternoon.

Others are: Rocky Horror, Alien, Halloween, Mean Streets, The Conversation, Blazing Saddles, Spirit of the Beehive, Aguirre, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Chinatown, The Sting, Jaws, Eraserhead, High Plains Drifter, Superman, Nashville, Apocalypse Now, Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Cabaret, Saturday Night Fever, MASH, Star Wars, and Close Encounters.

That's 25. And now I see The Godfather and Paper Moon. What am I missing?

Edit: I forgot to write down Cuckoo's Nest, there we go.

Wouldn't be surprised if they all made it, but some of these could miss out, I'm not sure on the overall opinion here: Saturday Night Fever, Superman, Rocky Horror, Paper Moon, The Sting, and High Plains Drifter.

I delved so deep into arthouse I never heard about Logan's Run. I heard about Omen, but didn't see it.

Miss Vicky 07-16-14 05:04 PM

Haven't seen either of the first two. And looking at those point totals and I am quite certain my #1 pick won't make the cut. :(

My List:
25. Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1 point, not on the countdown)

Hopefully Paper Moon makes it out of the ones you mentioned Daniel. I loved that movie. I also really liked High Plains Driter, i don't really care about the others but think Superman will make it at least.

Incredible layout Holden!

I haven't seen Logans Run, expected it to be higher. I don't care at all for The Omen, the whole "I did this for you Damien!" Scene was kind of creepy, that's about it though. Expected The Omen to be higher also actually.

You mean to tell me Coffy won't be on the list?

.............................................................................

At first I thought, oooooh, this looks good so far. Two movies that actually feel like '70s movies to me. As much as I know '70s movies.

But then you go and put THE OMEN before Coffy. One of the most boring horror films ever made.

http://www.movieforums.com/community...1&d=1405542559

Coffy.

#10 on my list.

Between this and Yoda ruining the chances of Pumping Iron being a 1 pointer movie, we're off to a bad start.

Dammit, people. I know both of you have looked at my 100. I'm very disappointed in both of you. :tsk:

Two down, and I already have my first pick, the wonderful Logan's Run. Yes it runs out of steam before the end (pun intended) and, yes, it's a bit dull once Peter Ustinov turns up, but, gosh darn it, before all that, it's bloody good fun and the ultimate 70's future look. Plus, sci-fi's greatest robot. Box.

http://media.sfx.co.uk/files/2012/11/logans-run-box.jpg

Sadly, I also have my first confirmed casualty, as Coffy didn't make the list. :( I had it higher than I did Logan's Run, too. Nevermind. It was mentioned and it got close. This also means it looks like Foxy Brown won't make it either, seeing as people usually prefer Coffy to Foxy Brown.

I agree that The Omen is pretty boring. It's OK, it passes, it finishes, you leave it. It's done. It is 70's horror though, that can't be denied. If ever there was a decade which was defined by demons, the devil and possession, it was the 70's.

You mean "It's all for you, Damien."? What about David Warner's weird photographs, the storm in the park aimed at the priest, the two scenes in the car where first Damien freaks at the religious symbols and then the baboons freak at Damien, the attack in the graveyard, and all the violent climactic scenes leading to the ending? The plot is ridiculous, but it's ingenious, and Richard Donner gets a whole lot out of his budget. It's presented with such a straight face and good cast that you can easily get caught up in all the plot twists and WTFs. :)

They're both boring.

It's been awhile since I saw The Omen, but I've never cared for it.

I mean, personally, I'm not really frightened of Christian horror. The Exorcist is good, but it took a long time for me to like that, and it's still not a movie I feel the need to watch much. Since I question the existence of Satan in the first place, I'm not really that scared of him. But I don't mind movies about him. But when you get too deep into it, and you're performing exorcism after exorcism, it's starting to annoy me and it feels more like a Christianity propaganda film, like God's Not Dead.

Exorcism movies can be either really good, or really bad. Sometimes you have to mix it up.

Deliver us from Evil was a damn good flick. It has an exorcism in it but it is in the last 10 minutes of the flick. Otherwise it feels more like a cop drama. Only the perps are possessed.

I'll be happy if any of the movies on my list make it on the list at all. So far, two of my movies missed the list.

"Love at First Bite" was my #25, and "Murder By Death" was my #20.

I've never seen 'The Omen", and I re-watched "Logan's Run", but it just didn't stand the test of time for me.

I haven't seen The Omen, either. I had planned on watching it, but when I realized The Exorcist wasn't in contention for my list, I figured The Omen had no shot.

I can think of several movies that wouldn't surprise me if they made #1. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the spot doesn't go to A Clockwork Orange, Star Wars, or The Godfather. I'm sure there are some other contenders I wouldn't like to see make the top spot, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

I think my #2 choice has a decent shot at #1. Fingers crossed it at least comes close.
