Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Ok, since we can't seem to not talk about The Rock in the Matrix Reloaded thread, I started this thread in hopes that you'll bring all your discussion in here.

Ok..I mentioned The Rock's next feature is Helldorado which should start shooting this fall. What Rock's role in this movie is summarized right here...

The Rock will play a bounty hunter roaming the Amazon jungles

He's getting $10 million for the flick so you would expect a good performance out of him. No where in the article does it [EW] talk about The Rock having a role in Revolutions. :)

bigvalbowski 05-03-02 07:15 AM

I think Seann William Scott's in that too. So book me a ticket now.

I've made a pact with myself to see everything that Seann William Scott ever made after his performance in American Pie 2.

Oh and the Rock's pretty good too.

mecurdius 05-05-02 04:40 AM

Its the Rock, everyone's favorite wrestler is the Rock. I dont watch wrestling, and my favorite is the Rock!
put the Rock in any action movie, I'll see it.
i cant wait!!!!

You want to know what role is gonna crest The Rock to the next level?? Its being the bad guy Black Adam in the upcoming SHAZAM! movie (2016 or 2017 release date).

http://media.comicbook.com/wp-conten...black-adam.jpg

http://comicbook.com/blog/2014/09/03...ero-in-shazam/

The man has charisma, but when entering pro-wrestling the fans hated him as the good guy. I mean they hated him! To try and get him over the then WWF (now WWE) suggested he try being a bad guy. CLICK! The rest is history, and then the fans quickly adored him.

He will rock as a bad guy in this movie, you'lll see :)

Im a big fan of The Rock, I was when he was a wrestler and now he is a movie star. He has been in some great films and when he does a comic book movie it is going to make him an even bigger star.

Not really looking forward to this movie, but I approve of the selection.

All I can say about Dwayne Johnson is that his films are entertaining. He's not the greatest actor but he's not the worst either. I dont mind seeing his films. Most of them are action at least.

No.

He has no iconic roles or great action movies ime. I always root for the Rock to be the next Ahnald, but he just hasn't made "that" movie yet.

I really get confounded by this one, but I think they just don't make those movies anymore.

I seriously doubt that he will ever have a seriously iconic role in the same way that, say, Schwarzenegger or Stallone will. Assuming that their most iconic roles were the Terminator and Rocky respectively (for the sake of argument, dispute me if you want), those roles were star-making roles that loomed large in the cultural consciousness and so granted the actors fame by association. Johnson, on the other hand, became famous as a wrestler and basically playing himself. As such, none of the film roles he's played have really come across as iconic because they don't manage to override his existing level of fame. The closest he's arguably come to having an iconic role is the Scorpion King, and even then I'm pretty sure that they've made straight-to-video sequels without him so it obviously didn't stick.

Re: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

I get your point about his prior fame. He just doesn't play any unique character or face off against a unique villain. He just plays generic action guy.

I will always say that Predator is Arnold's best role. The main reason being the Predator and how great a villain/foe/monster it is.

I guess that as far as Schwarzenegger protagonists go, Dutch is one of the better ones since he gets slightly more development than his whole commando/mercenary leader archetype would suggest. Still, I'm arguing for iconography more so than quality because the Terminator is such a distinctive character while Dutch, for all his qualities, is not the most iconic part of Predator, let alone of Schwarzenegger's career.

If you're going to see all of Seann William Scott's work, don't forget The Dukes of Hazzard, it's one people tend to forget.

I'm gonna try to revive this thread.

Has Dwayne Johnson ever made a truly great movie? I'm drawing a blank. The ones I recall, all fall somewhere between shite and good. Any passionate defenders of The Rock's movies?

Uhm....I can't answer whether's he's made a great movie, because I always thought him a bit of a joke, but OMG, I caught some stupid comedy or whatever on Netflix the other night in which he had a bit role, and ... I THOUGHT HIM KINDA CHARMING. Wtf. :D

He is getting paid like there should be at least couple of great action movies attached to his name.

I don't think The Rock's ever been in a really good movie, but he's usually the best part of the mediocre ones he does make

I love the stories from the recent Fast and the Furious movies of how Vin Diesel is jealous of The Rock's and Jason Statham's charisma/acting ability

ShopkeeperTriumph 05-30-17 12:05 AM

I think he's likable. I'll never go to one of his movies purely for him, but everytime I see him on screen I always feel like he's giving his all. His voice performance in Moana was incredibly fun, and energized, I want to see him pursue more stuff like that.

I think Dwayne is great, but I agree that he hasn't made "that" movie yet, the one to put him over the top. I will say that there are couple of movies he's made that would have been intolerable without him.

"You can't have a Almond Joy because unlike you a Almond Joy actually has nuts" - The Rock

The Rock owned CM Punk with that line.

Although the segment would have been better if The Rock got a bit more serious here and not do his usual comedy act.

CM Punk did hold his own against The Rock which is extremely hard to do, he's the only guy I've seen that can go against The Rock in promos and not get completely owned other than Steve Austin but CM Punk didn't completely own The Rock here. They were both pretty much the same level in this promo in my opinion. I don't think any of them were really on their best night they can both do better than that, I think their styles just clash too much.

Wow I totally forgot that this feud existed and that The Rock won the WWE Championship again in 2013.

This was the last good WrestleMania build up, since then all the build ups have been ****.

CM Punk in my opinion is the best talker WWE ever has. He was also awesome in-ring (I like The Rock a lot too btw)

I wish The Rock would return to the ring again. His movies aren't that great to be honest they range from average to crap. He's much better when his wrestling.

Quentin Tarantino should get The Rock in his next film, he could do great stuff with The Rock I reckon he could write The Rock a script that could give The Rock a Oscar nomination.

I'm not sure I would call it "great," but if you haven't seen Southland Tales I recommend it. Quite the experience
