The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

Welcome! Welcome!

Allow me to kick-off the first new list of 2017!

Inspired by the discussions in the "What are the best films from the first half of the decade?" thread, I decided to take it one step further and do an actual countdown for it. I will tell you all my 51 favorite movies from the first 7 years of the 2010s.

Why 51? Well since it's an uneven number of years I'm reviewing, I might as well do an uneven number of movies. Come and join me in the odd-numbered shenanigans! :dizzy: :highfive: :dizzy:

Camo 01-11-17 12:27 PM

Looking forward to it . It's felt like there's been no personal countdowns here in ages unless i've missed them.

Yeah I haven't really seen any since I came back last month. Hopefully taking the initiative can encourage other members to start some up as well.

Hope you enjoy Camo!

And here we go!

51. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads...seven_ver3.jpg

While it may not be a masterpiece and yes, it's yet another remake (also yes, I know the original was a remake of Seven Samurai) this movie served its purpose of being a really fun Western shoot-em-up with a very interesting band of characters. I normally enjoy Fuqua's films and loved the cast which included Washington, Pratt, Hawke, D'onofrio, and Sarsgaard.

50. Spotlight (2015)

http://www.kickasstoo.com/wp-content...ull-Movies.jpg

Though I still don't feel that it should have won BP last year, I still think Spotlight is an engaging drama that deserved its praise. Michael Keaton's performance really shined in this and I'm happy that he's had such a career resurgence in Hollywood.

49. A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014)

https://www.puregeekery.net/wp-conte...West-Movie.png

Admittedly a guilty pleasure but I can't help it this movie is funny as hell! Neil Patrick Harris was hilarious in this and the Indian vision sequence had me :rotfl: like crazy.

48. The VVitch (2015)
http://cdn5.thr.com/sites/default/fi...tch_2015_0.jpg

Surely one of the better horror films of the decade. Creepy as hell with the goat Black Philip really stealing the show. A must-see for any horror fan.

Mäx 01-11-17 01:44 PM

Haven't seen neither but definitely want to see The VVitch.

The Witch is so good. Soooooo good

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

Interesting mixture. I haven't heard good things about A Million Ways to Die but it seemed like it would be funny. I've only seen bits of on TV. I didn't like The Witch, but I do like Spotlight quite a bit.

Watch_Tower 01-11-17 05:53 PM

I haven't seen any of those but I did try and watch A Million' but it was just so...bad. Seth McFarlane should never be allowed to act on screen ever again.

Camo 01-11-17 09:14 PM

The Witch is great, top five of 2016 to me so far. Spotlight was okay but i don't think i'll ever feel the need to watch it again.

Yeah most people hate Million Ways, so it's definitely my biggest guilty pleasure in this countdown. With those types of movies though all I'm looking for is a laugh, and Million Ways gave me a lot of 'em.

False Writer 01-12-17 12:25 PM

47: Deadpool (2016)

http://s3.foxmovies.com/foxmovies/pr.../111-front.jpg

Deadpool accomplishes what it's meant to accomplish very well: being fun, being edgy, and being the comic book movie that truly stands out from the rest. Ryan Reynolds was born to play THIS VERSION of Deadpool.

46. Argo (2012)
http://www.impawards.com/2012/posters/argo.jpg

A great thriller that solidified Ben Affleck as a great director. One of the better "based on a true event" movies of the decade.

45. Sucker Punch (2011)

http://www.warnerbros.com/sites/defa...?itok=rf6wxRri

Another guilty pleasure makes the cut! Like A Million Ways... the majority of people seem to hate this movie, but it's one that I enjoyed. I remember listening to the soundtrack quite a bit when it came out too. An entertaining flick (for me) that I think is a bit underrated.

44. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
http://static2.comicvine.com/uploads...7005-How-t.jpg

An animated film I really enjoyed upon first watch. It's been a long time since I've seen it but still remember how great it was. I also really need to watch the second one, which for some really strange reason I still haven't gotten around to!

rauldc14 01-12-17 12:30 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

I'm shocked that so many people like Deadpool this much. Aside from the opening credits which were genius, I just don't understand the love. It was OK but nothing special.

Argo was decent but we have certainly seen better best picture Oscar winners, such as last year's and this year's presumably as well.

I saw most of it on HBO the other day, but I missed the credits. It wasn't very good. I don't get the love either.

False Writer 01-12-17 12:41 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

I'm far from a Marvel/comic book movie fan but I would say that the past couple years they've been better. I do think Deadpool was the breath of fresh air that Marvel needed. Though I don't agree with the whole "make more comic movies rated R!" trend that's been going ever since it came out.

Yes there have been better BP winners than Argo, but only a couple from this decade I thought were better.

Mäx 01-12-17 12:42 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

Haven't seen Deadpool and Argo. Didn't like Sucker Punch but How to Train Your Dragon is a fantastic movie! Would probably appear in my top 25 of this decade.

Camo 01-12-17 12:56 PM

Expected to hate Deadpool but i actually quite liked it. Not a fan of Argo. How To Train Your Dragon is great, my favourite Dreamworks.

AdamUpBxtch 01-12-17 01:03 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

I'm gonna be following this list, haven't done another personal list in a while because I can't really think of a good one to do but this is perfect!

But I think people keep mixing up the X-Men Franchise & the MCU thinking they are run by the same studio. Fox are the ones running the X-Men Franchise (including Deadpool) since they bought the rights from Marvel back in the 90s while the MCU (Ironman, Avengers, Captain America) is actually run by Marvel (Disney who bought Marvel). Sony still has the rights to Spiderman they are just partnering up with Marvel and including Spiderman in the MCU now because The Amazing Spiderman 2 underperformed so they panicked and rebooted it again.

Citizen Rules 01-12-17 01:37 PM

Spotlight (2015) This is one of my favorite movies of 2015, based on a shocking true story. A very intelligently crafted story, that does not rely on old tired troupes and cliches, but is done like an investagive movie in the vein of All The Presidents Men. I'd call this a must see for any cinephile.

Argo (2012) Also based on a true story that most hadn't heard of until the movie came out. It avoids the usual pitfalls of a thriller and keeps the tone believable, well the ending gets a little broad but overall a solid movie.

Ah that's right, I knew that X-men and Deadpool were Fox but just wasn't thinking about it when posting.

I like Deadpool and Argo. The humor of Deadpool worked for me. Haven't seen Sucker Punch and thought How to Train Your Dragon was so-so.

False Writer 01-13-17 03:43 PM

43. Blood Father (2016)

https://i2.wp.com/teaser-trailer.com...ster.jpg?ssl=1

Mel Gibson returns to form in a surprisingly good film that is reminiscent of action movies from the 90s imo.

42. Spy (2015)

http://static.metacritic.com/images/...fdcebb984c.jpg

I did not expect this movie to be nearly as good and funny as it was. IMO Jason Statham steals the show in this one. Definitely Melissa McCarthy's best movie.

41. Django Unchained (2012)
http://www.impawards.com/2012/poster..._unchained.jpg

Truly a film that only Tarantino could make. Over the top in its brutality as well as its dark humor. I believe any fan of Tarantino would enjoy this movie (if they hadn't seen it yet for some odd reason).

40. The King's Speech (2010)

http://www.impawards.com/2010/posters/kings_speech.jpg

A great movie in every sense of the word. Great pacing, great cinematography, great set design, and of course, great acting!

Camo 01-13-17 03:47 PM

Django is actually one of my least favourite Tarantino films, it's still entertaining though. The King's Speech is very good, didn't expect to enjoy it as much as i did. Haven't seen the others.

Miss Vicky 01-13-17 03:56 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

I was a little underwhelmed by The King's Speech. It was good, but I didn't find it particularly memorable. I love Django Unchained. Not only is it one of my favorite Tarantino flicks, but it's also one of my favorite movies just in general.

I haven't seen the others and have no desire to see Spy.

Mäx 01-13-17 04:33 PM

Who told you to do that? I think FW is posting a few at a time because he's only doing short write-ups which makes sense. Really don't understand why people have this weird aversion to repping a post that contains something they don't like as if they are contributing to it financially by doing so or something . If you like one film and don't like another explain that in your comment

Thanks for clearing that up Camo.

Yeah I've always done countdowns like this and if there's a movie someone likes in a set they'll usually say "+rep for this film" and it's always worked fine. :yup:

False Writer 01-14-17 01:45 PM

39. Warcraft (2016)
http://media1.gameinformer.com/files...osters_610.jpg

A movie that wasn't that well received but there's a couple reasons why I personally like it. One, I played World of Warcraft for like 5 years, so I knew the lore of the world and could follow the film fine (and trust me, if you aren't familiar with the game's story, you'll have no idea what's going on). Second, I'm a big Travis Fimmel fan, mainly because of the TV show Vikings, and him being in it is a huge plus for me!

38. Frozen (2013)

http://www.impawards.com/2013/posters/frozen.jpg

Let it go! Let it gooo! Okay yeah that song's kinda annoying now but this movie is a massive part of the new golden age of Disney. I really enjoyed this one when it came out and still do.

37. True Grit (2010)

http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads...P3wldlMyRh.jpg

Definitely one of if not THE best remake of the decade. The Cohen Bros really did this one justice. Jeff Bridges was great as well of course.

36. End of Watch (2012)
http://www.bringthenoiseuk.com/wordp...-Watch-DVD.jpg

A very strong crime film with Gyllenhaal and Pena giving amazing performances in the lead roles. No doubt David Ayer's best directorial effort so far.

Miss Vicky 01-14-17 01:48 PM

Haven't seen Warcraft but I'm pretty sure I'd hate it. Haven't seen End of Watch either. I hated Frozen and wasn't too impressed with True Grit.

cricket 01-14-17 01:52 PM

The picks I really like so far are Argo, How to Train Your Dragon, Spotlight, Blood Father, and Django Unchained.

I wasn't crazy about Frozen, End of Watch, Deadpool, or The VVitch, although they weren't bad.

I'd like to see The King's Speech, True Grit, and maybe Spy.

Saunch 01-14-17 02:06 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

True Grit is pretty awesome. Probably the most underrated Coen Bros. movie in my opinion.

I really The King's Speech and Spotlight, which have gotten a lot of rotten reputation as Oscar bait but I think they're more valuable than just that.

Django is pretty fun but I find it a superficial, specially compared to QT's other western this decade.

The Witch is my favorite of all the movies listed so far.

Camo 01-14-17 02:13 PM

Really liked True Grit the first time i saw it but it went down a bit the second time. Not a fan of Frozen.

Only seen Frozen from the last set. Thought it was mediocre.

Citizen Rules 01-14-17 03:14 PM

I didn't care for True Grit, didn't hate it...but John Wayne was so much better in the original. It was just another watch it and forget movie.

I'm not a fan of Taranatino, but Django Unchained was mostly a fun movie, mostly due to DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz.

Loved the The King's Speech, this is my idea of a great film.

35. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads...HVUZhpoCNC.jpg

This is one of the very few super hero movies where I walked out thinking "That was actually really good." when I left the theater. This is the Marvel craze at its best imo. The airport fight was of course very fun to watch.

34. Animal Kingdom (2010)
http://18675-presscdn.pagely.netdna-...al-Kingdom.jpg

A harrowing Australian crime-thriller about a young man taking a nose-dive into the criminal underworld.

33. La La Land (2016)
http://www.lalaland.movie/assets/images/og.jpg

A fantastic tribute to the classic Hollywood musicals. Possibly the strongest contender for BP at the upcoming Oscars.

32. John Wick (2014)

http://images.redbox.com/Images/EPC/Kiosk/8092.jpg

Like most people, I saw the trailer and thought "Oh great, another Keanu movie." but then I was hearing that it was actually... pretty good! I finally got around to seeing it and was pleasantly surprised. This was actually a strong and well-done action movie.

I've only seen La La Land once, but it's one of my favorite movies of all time already.

John Wick was terrible for me.

I still haven't seen Civil War surprisingly. I have the DVD ready to go though.

cricket 01-15-17 01:41 PM

I would watch it again, but I was disappointed in Animal Kingdom the first time. Maybe I wasn't in the mood because it would seem to suit my taste perfectly.

I enjoyed John Wick, and I'll definitely watch the sequel, yet I don't think there was anything special about it.

I've gotten a little tired of superhero movies after going through a stretch of enjoying them. I'll probably try Civil War eventually.

La La Land is not something that appeals to me on the surface, but I will watch it because of all the acclaim and I like Gosling.

What's really funny is that I originally had Antichrist right next to Frozen on this list, but then remembered that Antichrist is from 2009. I also briefly considered adding in A Serbian Film.

Yeah it's flippin crazy, sometimes it gets so violent and messed up that it starts getting rather comedic, best example is when
WARNING: "Serbian Film" spoilers below

Camo 01-15-17 04:28 PM

I didn't realize for years that it was called A Serbian Film. A friend of mine saw it and was telling me about it so i asked what it was called and he said "it's a serbian film", for some reason i took that as him not knowing what it was called but knowing that it was made in Serbia. When i saw it (saw it online or something i mean i haven't watched it) like two years later i cracked up

I watched the first episode but wasn't that into it. Since it was a re-hash of the film's beginning I guess I should have given it a couple more episodes. I hated how they made the grandmother look like some old retired stripper. I liked it better in the film how she just looked like a little old lady, she didn't look like the head of a crime family in the least.

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

My main issue with Civil War: too many characters. I know that sounds weird but I do think the movie could be improved by containing the conflict. If it was just Steve, Tony and Bucky, I think, the climax would have more weight. It would help to feel more personal.

But, yeah, the airport scene was cool, though inconsequential.

Animal Kingdom is fantastic. I don't know if anyone else got a somnambulistic feel to it, I thought it made the overall product kind of mesmerizing.

John Wick is awesome. Plain and simple.

I'm off to see La La Land later today!

31. Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/u...et-Service.png

An awesome spy movie that is very strong in both action and comedy. That church scene is insane!

30. Take Shelter (2011)
http://static.wixstatic.com/media/96...90141997b5.jpg

An amazing psychological thriller about a man having visions of a cataclysmic supernatural storm. Great atmosphere and acting by the lead cast.

29. '71 (2014)
http://schmoesknow.com/wp-content/up...movie-2014.jpg

A terrific British film about a young soldier witnessing terrible events unfold during a riot in Belfast during, you guessed it, 1971.

28. Green Room (2015)
http://cdn2-www.comingsoon.net/asset...oom/gr_web.jpg

A very tense, shocking, and brutal film. One of the best thrillers of the decade for sure. RIP Anton Yelchin.

Three thumbs up for Take Shelter which would also be on my list

Camo 01-16-17 01:51 PM

Take Shelter is great. It's probably in my top twenty of the decade, i'm still that one weirdo who's favourite Nichols film is Shotgun Stories though :D. Not a fan of Green Room and haven't seen the others.

ShopkeeperTriumph 01-16-17 01:55 PM

'71 and Green Room were both pretty good, both a solid
to me. I wasn't a fan of Kingsman, it tried a little too hard for me with it's humor, and overall "coolness" personally, but hey, I'd be up for a sequel if they did it right. It still had some solid action scenes.

Good list so far.

I thought Take Shelter was very well done, but it's not a personal favorite. Haven't seen the others.

Never seen Shotgun Stories but it does sound interesting!

Kingsmen came off as juvenile to me. Edgerton is good, though. Guy's got "next big thing" material.

Take Shelter is very good. Funny, I dont really hear much about Shannon and Chastain's performances by they're both great in it. Nichol's is very good at authenticity.

Haven't seen '71. I didn't really take to Green Room but I liked Blue Ruin (Saulnier's previous). Yelchin was good, as was Stewart but Imogen Poots was the standout to me. Keep an eye on her, I think she's on her way to the big leagues.

A lot of movies I don't like, a few I like, and a few I love.

Nevertheless, I always appreciate threads like this and it's always fun to follow top or favorite-anything lists! Looking forward to more, as always.

I've seen Kingsman which was ok to good and Take Shelter which was frickin' awesome! Jeff Nichols is such a great director!

I quite like Take Shelter and Kingsmen, but I was very disappointed in Green Room.

Not familiar with 71.

I'm really surprised that quite a few of you didn't like Green Room that much. Obviously, I thought it was pretty friggin good!

It seems to me that, on this forum at least, it's the big horror fans who are not in love with Green Room. I thought it was ok, but as someone who watches a lot of horror, I didn't see anything about it that stood out.

I really don't see it as a horror movie though, of course horror and thriller are very similar genres that can be blurred quite often, but I consider it a very intense thriller.

Thank you Nope!

cricket 01-16-17 11:25 PM

Yea, a thriller sure, I wouldn't argue that. It's one of those movies that's on the line. You see, I was pretty hyped for it because I kept hearing how brutal it was, but I usually see something more brutal than that every week. I liked it a little and it's certainly well made. I loved Blue Ruin.

Yeah, same. I heard it was really brutal so when I watched it I was shocked by how little brutality there was. That wouldn't matter to me if the movie was good otherwise (I love a good gore flick but I love a good non-gory flick too), just that I was expecting something different. I think the movie is certainly well-crafted in terms of direction but I didn't think the script was very great and I think that's what killed it for me. I'm a big Yelchin fan, so I wanted to like it. I just think it's a little overrated in terms of how well-done it is. Another case where hype does more of a disservice to a film than anything else.

27. The Tree of Life (2011)

https://tgc-cache.s3.amazonaws.com/i..._of_life_1.jpg

I had never seen a film quite like this one before. Quite a mesmerizing tale about a Texas family that ends up transcending time and space.

26. Krampus (2015)
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....77,268_AL_.jpg

One of the more unique horror movies of the decade. A very enjoyable movie with some great practical effects and monster designs.

25. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/...20150109174425

Bring on the hate! I've discussed before but I'm a fan of the Hobbit films even though many people hate them (I will agree that they're not quite on LotR's level) The final installment might have been extremely heavy on the CGI but was still enjoyable for me. Also, "The Last Goodbye" by Billy Boyd is an awesome ending song!

24: Ant-Man (2015)
https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/im...C0%2C300%2C450

Ant-Man is perhaps my favorite superhero film. I just found the whole character and origin story to be very enjoyable. Many of the scenes and situations also had some great comedic value, such as the climatic fight on the train set, which I thought was hilarious!

I like Ant Man too. I didn't quite like The Hobbit that you picked. I did like the first two well enough though.

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

First set i haven't seen any. Didn't like the first Hobbit so i didn't bother with the others. Love Trick r Treat so i want to see Krampus. Malick is hit or miss for me but i definitely want to see The Tree of Life at some point.

Saunch 01-17-17 02:53 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

Tree of Life is the most fascinating movie of the decade so far. Visually, obviously, but there's really something wonderful about the way Malick connects his rumination on family, childhood and nurture with the origins of life and conscience in the universe. That level of eloquence is missing from his other outputs in the last six years.

Haven't seen Krampus but I know it's got a growing cult following. I'll be sure to check it out soon. The only Tolkein film I can consider great is Fellowship. I maintain that The Hobbit is a good 3 hour movie harmed by being stretched into a trilogy. And Jackson should have given it to someone else to direct.

I don't think I can really say anything good or bad about Ant-Man. It's the kind of movie that gets Marvel criticism for being flat.

Take Shelter is one of my favorite movies.

23. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

http://voices.nationalgeographic.com...uad-poster.jpg

I'm pretty sure this was the first Wes Anderson movie I ever saw, so I thought the whole look of it was very unique. Very funny and engaging with a stellar cast.

22. The Hateful Eight (2015)
https://indierevolver.files.wordpres...ng?w=800&h=408

This is my favorite Tarantino since Kill Bill Vol 1. Most of the movie takes place in one cabin but the dialogue and characters really make it enjoyable to watch, not to mention the wild events that unfold throughout the film.

21. Dredd (2012)
https://geekvsgoth.files.wordpress.c...dredd_2012.jpg

An amazing, high-octane action film that's a blast to watch. I feel kinda proud that I was one of the very few people that actually saw this in theaters—as it bombed massively on its theatrical release.

20. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
http://mauiwatch.com/wp-content/uplo...ge-790x445.jpg

I don't really consider this a war film as much as a biopic of a great man who did something truly amazing. Running into a warzone without a gun or no way to defend yourself and saving 75 wounded soldiers is something that will probably never be equaled. Garfield did a great job of portraying Desmond Doss and Mel did a stellar job returning to the director's chair.

Camo 01-18-17 11:41 AM

Grand Budapest isn't one of my very favourite Wes films but it is very good anyway. The Hateful Eight is very good too, it's my second favourite post-90s Tarantino after Inglorious Basterds.

Miss Vicky 01-18-17 01:04 PM

Re: The Decade So Far: My 51 Favorite Movies from 2010-16

I liked The Hateful 8 quite a bit but I didn't care for Grand Budapest at all (or anything Wes Anderson, really). Haven't seen the others.

cricket 01-18-17 07:38 PM

I'm excited to see Hacksaw Ridge while the other 3 are all good!

19. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

http://schmoesknow.com/wp-content/up...aug_poster.jpg

Smaug is without a doubt the best movie dragon ever. His conversation with Bilbo was perfect and one of my favorite scenes. The rest of the movie was great fun as well!

18. The Jungle Book (2016)
http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/...ungle-book.jpg

One of the many Disney live-action (even though there wasn't much live-action) remakes of their old animated films. Most of the ones I've seen were pretty good but I was surprised with how great The Jungle Book was. The animals were really neat looking and were voiced by a top-notch cast. Even though I'm a fan of the original Disney Jungle Book, I have to say that this one may have surpassed it!

17. The Raid 2 (2014)

https://scdn.nflximg.net/ipl/12942/f...9ae01715b1.jpg

Just like the first Raid, The Raid 2 offers insane, chaotic, and insanely bloody action sequences—but now with more of a dramatic story. This is truly an action masterpiece that needs to be seen by anyone that enjoys the genre!

16. Tangled (2010)
http://www.impawards.com/2010/posters/tangled.jpg

The movie that truly started the Disney resurgence that we see today. Tangled is imo one of the funniest Disney movies and arguably one of the best. Flynn Rider and Maximus the horse are 2 of my favorite Disney characters as well. A great family film that I believe anyone could enjoy.

I've only seen The Jungle Book (2016) after the last block of movies, I'd like it and in large part to Bill Murry's voice work. But I do plan on seeing Hacksaw Ridge (2016).

Camo 01-19-17 11:46 AM

As i said earlier only watched the first Hobbit and didn't like it so i didn't bother with the others. The only other one i've seen is Tangled not long ago, it surprised me i thought it was very good; could've been even better without some of the songs and a few cringey jokes but it is my second favourite Disney since 2000 after Wreck-It Ralph. Agreed that damn horse was hilarious.

cricket 01-19-17 05:36 PM

Only saw Raid 2 from the recent set. It's a great action film but I don't think of it as a favorite.

If pacing was the biggest problem you had with The Hobbit then I do recommend checking out the rest. I won't say that you will absolutely love the other 2 but they do move at a bit quicker pace, and if nothing else then at least watch it for the scene with Bilbo and Smaug!
