We have this thread where people post their top ten first-time viewings of the year. Still holding out until the end of the year before I post a new list, though.

Thanks! I was literally about to start a thread of my top 20 films seen this year but seeing as there is a thread already, I’ll just toss them there.

Last Year At Marienbad

More than I hoped it would be.

It is a good one, I realized later
WARNING: "gg" spoilers below
that the woman is the mother in Jeanne Dilemann
. I thought back on that later and it seemed to add a little to JD

Some of my favourite first time watches of 2020:

Beyond The Hills (2012)
Sons of the Desert (1933)
Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party (2015)
Thank You and Good Night (1992)
Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005)
The Cameraman (1928)
The House That Jack Built (2018)
The Wise Kids (2011)
Dolores Claiborne (1995)
Fruitvale Station (2013)

Wooley 01-01-21 08:23 PM

Rashomon
Wuthering Heights
Parasite
Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou
Throne Of Blood
Belle Du Jour
Dark Passage
Long Weekend
Sword Of Doom
The Big Sleep

These were all somewhere between good and great.
I also went back and watched all the Friday the 13th movies I had never bothered to watch, which included 5, 7, 8, and 9. None were good but there is a certain garbage-can level of charm.
There were more but few notables.

The Neon Demon (A+)
Gandahar (A-)
Yojimbo (A)

What are your thoughts on Paris, Texas? I remember you mentioning you were meaning to check that film out some time ago. It's definitely great and glad that it topped your list!

My personal No.1 (if we don't take Rocky Horror seriously).

From the ones I remember watching last year I enjoyed Spartacus, The Chaser, The Spy Gone North, To Live and Die in LA and The Death of Stalin.

And the best of the lot was

It was a bit of a slow burn throughout, albeit an increasingly emotional one, and of course, the final 15 minutes were superb, and enough to put it over the top for me.

I forgot a couple of others:

Jojo Rabbit struck me with a mixture of irony and drama
