John Steinbeck
Anyone on here read any of his stuff? Got The Grapes of Wrath and The Winter of Our Discontent for Christmas and only just started reading them - thanks to being busy with schoolwork. :(

Re: John Steinbeck
The Grapes of Wrath is great. If you haven't read Chapter 3, jump to that. It's a short, self-contained story about a desert turtle trying to cross a road. In and of itself, it's amazingly vital, but in the context of the novel, it takes on added power.

Re: John Steinbeck
One of my favorite books and films of all time is indeed The Grapes of Wrath.

Re: John Steinbeck
One of my favorite writers. The Grapes of Wrath is my favorite book of all time, and East of Eden isn't far behind.

Re: John Steinbeck
I've read Of Mice and Men (required reading in my school), In Dubious Battle, The Red Pony (school assignment) and The Pearl (another school assignment). Aside from Of Mice and Men, which I enjoyed and which was adapted into one of my favorite movies, I don't remember a whole lot about them.

Re: John Steinbeck
I know you are on 70s overload Miss Vicky but I highly recommend The Grapes of Wrath for you.

Re: John Steinbeck
I was substituting one day in a middle school and read The Pearl. It was a short read and very good, as is the movie.

Re: John Steinbeck
The end of the Grapes of Wrath always makes me cry no matter how many times I re-read it

Re: John Steinbeck
East of Eden is probably my favorite. Other than Grapes, what else can you folks recommend? Trying to compile my summer reading list.
