"Doctor, Doctor"

Holden Pike 01-01-05 11:35 AM

Oh, yeah: and why isn't this in the DVD forum?

Mose 01-01-05 12:28 PM

I'm a big fan of Northern Exposure.

My biggest complaint with TV series coming out on DVD is that they STILL haven't released Twin Peaks Season 2... I want to know who killed Laura Palmer damnit and I'm not going to break down and watch the bastardized movie version. There should be some sort of law requiring production companies to release the next season if the previous season has a big cliffhanger ending... Yup, I think I'll write my congressperson (gotta be pc).

Pyro Tramp 01-01-05 03:25 PM

I really want to watch Twin Peaks, it was on before my time and my only real chance to see it is on DVD. Also, my bloody film teacher showed my class the start and end of it, so really really want to see it.

Holden Pike 01-02-05 12:20 PM

"Bastardized movie version"? It's not like Twin Peaks: Fire, Walk with Me was made by Joel Schmuacher or something. How can David Lynch continuing to explore the world he created be "bastardized"?

The second season of "Twin Peaks" just isn't as good as the first. The first is damn near perfect, and those first eight episodes or so may be the finest work Lynch has ever done. But the question of "Who killed Laura Palmer?" was never meant to be answered in any conventional way. The network pressured Lynch to give the audience answers, but his heart was never in it and the second season doesn't have the same spark of creativity those initial episodes did. It's more like just going through the motions, too often playing like a parody of itself.

I still want them to release season two on DVD, for sure, but it's not near the top of my wishlist. More seasons of "The Larry Sanders Show"...now THAT is a frippin' priority, Man.

Mose 01-02-05 12:25 PM

Sure it's not a priority for you Holden... You've already watched the series! I've been waiting years to see the 2nd season, so heck yeah it's a priority!

Also, the reason I call it a bastardized version is b/c, similar to your argument, this wasn't meant to be a straight forward series and certainly not one that's resoved in an hour and a half. Kind of like sex, sure the ending's the best part, but it's also quite bit of fun getting there! :)

Holden Pike 01-02-05 12:30 PM

Have you even SEEN Fire, Walk with Me? If you think there's a heck of a lot of plot resolution going on there, you have been sadly misinformed.

And if you don't know who it was that physically killed Laura Palmer by the end of the first season, you haven't been paying attention. The "why" is more difficult to say (though not much easier after season two and/or the movie either), but the "who" should be clear.

Pyro Tramp 01-02-05 02:27 PM

Is it possible to watch the 1st season on its own and not need to bother watching the 2nd to get the Twin Peaks experience?

Lance McCool 01-02-05 02:30 PM

I just got both Family Guy box sets. Even though this show can get really stupid sometimes, I still love it.

Holden Pike 01-02-05 03:38 PM

Yes. The Log Lady's log told me so.

Pyro Tramp 01-02-05 03:45 PM

No season 1 cliffhanger?

MovieMaker5087 01-02-05 04:01 PM

I have:

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volumes 1, 2, and 3
Every Seinfeld episode on DVD (though I will not say how I got these)
Seasons's 1 and 4 of The Simpson's
Season 2 of King of the Hill.
Garfield and Friends Volume 1

I think that's all I have...

I have been told the movie reveals everything, so I have never watched it... As for figuring out who killed Laura Palmer after the first season, I guess I'm just a moron :) I haven't watched it in a couple of years though so perhaps I'll have a mini-marathon this week and see if it's a bit more obvious the 2nd time around.

This week I picked up the first season of "The Greatest American Hero". Oh yes, Ralphie boy. Time to put on the supersuit the little green guys left us and kick some Commie butt.

Along with the first batch of episodes, it has a nice collection of long interviews with series creator Stephen J. Cannell ("The Rockford Files") and stars William Katt, Robert Culp, Connie Sellecca and Michael Paré.

Believe it or not, it's on DVD, I never thought I could feel so free-ee-ee.

Holden Pike 04-09-05 03:44 PM

I'll have to update my list as I've acquired a bunch of new series since my last post, and this Tuesday I'll be scooping up "The Bob Newhart Show" complete first season. Newhart is a genius.

In coming weeks I'll be buying season sets of "Scrubs", "News Radio" and the complete series of "The Job". While all of those are great and I can hardly wait, the one I'm really waiting most for just now is coming at the end of May...

Oh yes, and coming on May 31st to R1 DVD is "Moonlighting", the first two seasons. Brilliant show, especially the first few years. The His Girl Friday-style overlapping dialogue is fantastic stuff, and both Willis and Shepherd are perfect as David Addison and Maddie Hayes. The blending of and delicate balance between comedy and a detective show was inspired. For those of you who have never seen it, you have no idea what a great show you've been missing. It's kind of like Hitchcock by way of The Marx Brothers and Bringing up Baby. Great, great show. Do bears bear? Do bees be?

MADDIE HAYES
David, I just don't think...

DAVID ADDISON
[interrupting]
That's okay, you look good.

DAVID ADDISON
I remember when they told Sylvia Plath, "Hey,
Syl, cheer up!" I remember when they told e. e.
cummings, "e, baby; use caps!" But did ol' e
listen? no. Little n. Little o.

DAVID ADDISON
I'm looking for a man with a mole on his nose.

MADDIE HAYES
A mole on his nose?

DAVID ADDISON
A mole on his nose.

GUARD
What kind of clothes?

DAVID ADDISON
What kind of clothes do you suppose?

GUARD
What kind of clothes do you suppose would
be worn by a man with a mole on his nose,
who knows?

DAVID ADDISON
Did I happen to mention, did I bother to
disclose, this man that we're seeking with a
mole on his nose? I'm not sure of his clothes,
or anything else... Except he's Chinese, a big
clue by itself.

MADDIE HAYES
How do you do that?

DAVID ADDISON
Gotta read alot of Dr. Suess.

GUARD
I'm sorry to say, I'm sad to report. I haven't
seen anyone at all of that sort. Not a man
who's Chinese with a mole on his nose, with
some kind of clothes that you can't suppose.
So get away from this door and get out of
this place, or I'll have to hurt you, put my
foot in your face.

blibblobblib 04-09-05 09:17 PM

I've never seen Moonlighting, but i would gladly start watching it now just from reading that last quote of your's Holden.

I have...

Arrested Development - Season One
The Office - Entire collection of the British original.
Sex and The City - Season 4,5,6. Fabulous.
Futurama - Series 3
Little Britain - Series One. If any of you guys in the States havn't seen this, you should definatly check it out.
Simpson's - Series 4. This is the series when The Simpson's starts to become legendary.
Family Guy - Entire collection
Ally McBeale - Series 3.
Dead Like Me - First Season. Anyone want to buy this off me? I saw one episode and my Bro got it for me from the States. It sucks. It just doesnt even have a good point to make. Pretensious, crude, pointless rubbish...thats sometimes a bit funny.

Moonlighting was ace by the way, but went a bit up itself in later series. :)

blibblobblib 04-10-05 09:15 AM

I absoloulty loved the first series, as it was new material, but i really enjoyed the second series as well. Some of the gags did get a bit samey, Like Lou and Andy, Vicky Pollard and The Gay, plus i missed the Scottish Man and his hotel in the 2nd series. However, i loved new characters like "Bitty", Bubbles, and i was glad Marjory Dawes and the Ladeeees were still around. Genius.

Obvious innit? :D

blibblobblib 04-10-05 02:14 PM

Have you looked at the episodes of Rock Profile on the extra's? I think that where they got the basic idea for the surreal pairing of Warhole and Reed. The rock profile with Shirley Bassey is superb.

"Hasn't got the range darling, hasn't got the range!"

Tacitus 04-10-05 03:06 PM

Oops, I haven't watched any of the extras yet (and got the thing at Christmas  ).

I'm hoping to eventually get the old Twilight Zone series but boy is it expensive. Around 140-160 bucks canadien.

i got each set for $20 because of the misprint in hollywood video ad and i price matched in Best Buy, i bought a bunch of sets, which i sold on eBay and give 'em out as gifts. As soon as i had no more i went to purchase a few more sets. Soon they called up Hollywood Video and found out that it was a misprint in the ad. So i couldn't get a copy for myself =/.

How about this line?

Oh sh*t. Sorry Holden. I never realized you said that exact same thing in your post until you pointed it out to me. I only read the first few lines of your quotes and since it didn't ring a bell, i just assumed it wasn't it. But what are the chances that we both would pick that scene? I guess it just goes to show how funny it really was at the time. :yup:

I went looking for a TV show to buy yesterday, but couldn't find anything worthy.

The ones I have:

The Golden Girls - season 1
The Monkees - season 1
Keeping Up Appearances - seasons 3,4,5
V - there's only one season
Sex and the City - season 5
ALF - season 1

Remarked the fella with "ALF" and "The Golden Girls" in his collection.

Now wait a minute.. Wasn't there at least two seasons?

Sexy Celebrity 04-18-05 06:33 PM

I debated upon Seinfeld:1 & 2, The Simpsons, and Will & Grace, but decided it wasn't a day to buy a TV show. I would have liked The Kids in the Hall, but didn't want to pay the price.

I think V only had one season. I may be wrong.

"V" (1983) was of course originally a mini-series, which was followed by a second mini-series called "V: The Final Battle" (1984). After those two specials, there was one season of "V" (1984-1985) the regular series, which only lasted twenty episodes.

Right. What he said. BTW, I can't believe how many TV shows you own on DVD! Though, nothing that I have.
