Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Totally agree with your choice of Star Wars 3-6.
The first two were let downs, the second being the worst.
Agree with dropping Spidey Trilogy. The first was pretty good but the other two were just too far. Even for a comic book movie.

I see you're not a comic book movie fan.

All Batman and Superman movies dropped. Burton's first Batman and Nolan's 2 Bat movies were all good. Supe 1 & 2 were good.

You dropped Critters Collection though? The first one was pretty funny, the sequels were pap though.

No Jurassic Park either? Aww. Ok the second wasn't an improvement but the first one should have a spot on everyone's shelf.

honeykid 01-28-12 07:25 AM

You're right, I'm definately not a comic fan. Super heroes don't float my boat. That's also why the Superman films are gone (never liked them) and, as for Batman, I think Batman Returns is the best by far, but after that it's the 1960's Batman for me.

http://www.bat-mania.co.uk/guides/im...1966_movie.jpg

I'll take this over all the other Batman films, even Batman Forever which at least has Drew in it (although far too briefly.)

http://img2-3.timeinc.net/ew/i/2011/...Batman_458.jpg

I can't take Batman seriously, that's why the newer ones aren't on the list. Also, Christian Bale as Batman? Holy stupid growly voice, Batman!

I thought the first Critters was ok, though I have to say that I've not seen it for a very long time, so I might not even go for that, now. If I caught it on tv about 30 minutes in and there was nothing else on, I may get into it, but that's no recommendation to own it.

Definately no Jurassic Park. One of the most disappointing films I've ever seen. At least Pete Postleswaite is in the sequel. Not that I finished watching that film, either.

The Rodent 06-05-12 12:06 AM

Ok, I'm going to try and compete with Used Future's collection. Here goes...

Overall pic. Whole lot is about 5 feet tall.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/...Rodent/DVD.jpg

---

Close up of singular movies. Two are missing from the photo though, Avatar and The Expendables. Avatar hadn't been bought at the time of the picture and Expendables is at my Brother's house.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/...odent/DVD4.jpg

Close up of singular movies that don't fit in the slots due to dopey cardboard sleaves.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/...odent/DVD5.jpg

---

The collections, franchises and originals-sequels that sit on top of the whole lot.
http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/...odent/DVD7.jpg

A few changes since my last list I posted, some I got rid of due to not being watched or I simply have no interest. There's still some on the list to be dumped too.
At least mine are in Alphabetical order though

:nope: I look at Shawshank as a chick flick with dudes.
People call it the ultimate revenge movie, but it's the most overrated IMO. It wa just a boring mess that people later called a classic.

The Rodent 06-15-12 04:06 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Oh...

... dear...

Shawshank is a bit boring in parts, yes, but to make a decent movie doesn't mean you have to fill it with Michael Bay explosions and machine-gun fire.

Shawshank is definitely a classic, like the other King/Darabont prison collaboration The Green Mile. Though both are quite far removed from one another in terms of atmosphere.

Shawshank is a drama with the odd hit of violence, but mainly story and plot.
Screenplay, overall plot and writing, dialogue, acting, everything basically points to drama

Shawshank is a chick-flick/chick-flick with Dudes?
It's as far removed from a 'chick-flick' as Predator 2 is.

To class it in the same vein as Notting Hill, Four Weddings or Bridget Jones' Diary is a bit of an insult to Shawshank's makers.

Powderfinger 06-15-12 04:56 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

I liked Four Weddings and a funeral..lol! :D It's not chick-flick at all...Donnie!

Nausicaä 06-15-12 08:38 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

I'm with Donnie(except the chick flick part/boring), I'd give it 3 stars. It's a good film but highly overrated.

Tyler1 06-15-12 09:22 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Although one can extrapolate from the fact that most people have horrendous movie taste, just because it's damn popular doesnt make it a bad movie...

4 solid stars I say.

donniedarko 06-15-12 01:24 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

If you watch a low budget chick flick HS movie with a mean dean instead of a mean warden then it's pretty damn similar. The seen where he plays classical music and everyone suddenly has a change of heart I was thinking "are you f*ckimg kidding me". That's something straight out of a low budget Indian movie. People felt inspired, all I felt was tht I'm ready for a goods night rest. I was literally forcing myself to keep my eyes open during the movie. IMBD putting this as the number one film of all time is a slap in the face to all of the film industry.

Powderfinger 06-15-12 08:29 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

When he played the classical music, it was about defiance with tiranny! And he could to it. Though he spent 1 month in the hole!

Flimmaker1473 06-16-12 01:17 AM

The Shawshank redemption was a great film. Four stars. It is trendy these days to call it overrated (same with Forrest Gump).

I truly don't like it. And IMO its not just overrated it's plain out bad. I wouldn't say it just to be different, I say it because its my opinion. I could hardly keep my eyes open this boring film.

I don't know about others, I'm certainly not calling it overrated because it's trendy to thank you very much, I actually think it's overrated and have done for years. :yup:

If I may ask, what films are included in that Martial Arts Film Collection?

The Rodent 08-10-12 09:59 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

4 really bad ones.
Van Damme Black Eagle
Van Damme Kickboxer
Sandra Bullock Fire On The Amazon
Nicole Kidman (looking really fat and really ginger) Nightmaster

My Dad got it me... he saw it in a junk sale for like, 50 pence.

TylerDurden99 08-10-12 10:52 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

I actually really want to see Black Eagle, with Van Damme as the villian.

The Rodent 08-11-12 04:52 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

It's an odd film really. For a martial arts flick it's a bit tame. Bad acting, bad writing and not the sort of action you'd expect from a movie with Van Damme.
Worth a watch if you get the chance, as you said... just to see Van Damme play a villain for once.

The Rodent 11-08-12 07:45 AM

Ok, two more... or should I say, eight more for the collection.
Lord Of The Rings trilogy boxset extended editions and all 5 Planet Of The Apes boxset.

Excuse the crude pictures... I took them on my phone.

True. Then again films have been changing, the demographic also, becoming hyper-affecting with 'reality' collapsing inside of itself. Also Shawshank's banker is quite the heroic common-man peacemaking etc. etc.; Sort of sick of that, most probably are. It also uses and old epic, this is the exhilaration of the audience, must be feeling, culminations of bassy powerhouse musical score, climactic...; OK, been there and done that, grew out and far away from. - Just saw 90's underdog film Rudy, even more so in ways

Still want to read the short story, maybe.

The Rodent 11-08-12 03:08 PM

New layout, that old shelving system was getting full and becoming just too tall with all the boxsets on top.
The new Planet Of The Apes boxset I bought today isn't in these pics, I didn't buy it for me... The Expendables is also not in these pics still, I've written that one off after lending it to my brother nearly a year ago.

Decided just to stick the lot together in alphabetical order rather than seperate them all into boxsets and individual slots... you'll probably notice that about 90 of my Top 100 Personal Favourites list appears in my collection.

Whole thing

Plus rep for only one of my DVDs? :)

I had another shufty today... looking at the pictures above made me see I'd put some of them the wrong way round. The Obsessive Compulsive in me had to immediately remedy the situation.

Batman Begins and Dark Knight are the wrong way round... and El Mariachi and Eight Legged Freaks needed swapping around too.

Here's a challenge: If anyone sees any more that are the wrong way round, let me know.

Daniel M 11-09-12 04:39 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Nice collection you've got there, I really need to start getting DVDs of my favourite films.

The Rocky set should be ahead of Robin Hood and Robocop ;)

It's just one you usually don't see, and I love that movie, so it's good seeing it there. There are a few others in there that warrant the rep (Highlander, The Lost Boys, the Rocky films, Terminator 1 & 2, Armageddon, Batman, Predator, Die Hard) as well, but Demolition Man stands out, for some reason.

Two more for the collection. A replacement Expendables for the one my brother nicked a year ago and The Thing prequel.

Also two sided disks and 'simple cheaper' logo text display. I'm hoping bluray doesn't go there. Anyone else a little anal?

Just noticed something really small but shouldn't Starship Troopers be ahead of all the Star Wars? I might be wrong but I think that's how alphabetical order works.

Star Wars

:)

I think though that you just look at the first word and keep going whilst the letters are the same and then when if the word ends it becomes the first listed, like I said I might be completely wrong just a feeling I have when you have a 1 word v 2 word situation :p

Been to the DVD shop... only one that I had on my list was Young Guns 2, the rest were bought on impulse...

The rest of my list is yet to be bought... :D

I know I said Young Guns 2 is a bit poop, but I just fancied having it next to the original on my shelf.

Actually, I'll probably stick Prometheus on in a few minutes.

The Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead are the limited editions too, they were labelled at a lower price than the regular DVD for some reason... grabbed!

Nausicaä 01-01-13 03:52 PM

Nice bargins there with Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Prometheus. Willow is cool too, I've pre-ordered it when it's out in a few months on blu-ray for the first time, can't wait to see it.

Not a fan of double sided discs either...
Can't stand double sided discs here too. Don't think I have any left in my collection now, got rid of them I think.

The Rodent 01-01-13 04:23 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Funny thing like I said, of the 6 I bought, I didn't mean to buy 5 of them... it was impulse.

Glad about getting the matching limited edition boxes for Shaun and Fuzz though... can't wait for The World's End next year, hopefully I'll get the matching box for that too.

^ I'd love The Goonies on blu-ray, America have a gorgeous box set out for it at the moment but it's too expensive for my liking.

The Rodent 01-10-13 07:10 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

The DVD is pretty good tbh... there's a commentary track that actually flits between the film and the cast who are in the studio giving the commentary, so instead of just being their voices over the film, you can actually see them giving the commentary while the movie plays in a box at the bottom right of the screen.
All the main group are there, Astin, Brolin, Plimpton, Cohen, Green, Quan and Feldman with Richard Donner.
Feldman is a bit talky though, he keeps talking over everyone and actually gets louder if someone tries to talk over him, as if he's the most important one in the room. Quite funny though.

Has anyone noticed that all of the main cast's names end with the letter N?

I have to wait until next month for Dredd, have to get it from another country to get the separate blu-ray, we only get a one disc combo 3D/2D blu-ray in Britain.

The Rodent 01-17-13 07:35 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Is that the only Blu-ray available over here? A double movie disc?

That's a bit pants if you don't want the 3D version.
Talk about hocking a scam.

Nausicaä 01-17-13 07:45 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Yep, but you can get it as a separate 2D blu-ray disc in other countries like France. There is a risk with my make of blu-ray player that it can lose the multi region function when you upgrade to make it able to play 2D/3D combo discs and I'm not risking the upgrade for a few combo discs. I'd rather pay a bit extra to import the film than lose my blu-ray multi region capable option. Don't want to lose that precious option. :nope::nope:

Still got a whole bunch of sequels to get. Some of these are a bit meh but I fancy completing the half franchises I own, simply for the sake of it.
Namely Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Ghoulies 3 and 4, Paranormal Activity 3 and 4, The Chronicles Of Riddick, Resident Evil 3, 4 and 5...

... and am currently awaiting The World's End to be released in cinemas and then on DVD so I can complete the Three Flavours Cornetto films.

Also on the lookout for Poltergeist 2 and 3.

Also on the lookout for Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and Avengers Assemble but they've become like rockinghorse sh*t in highstreet shops.

You say that like it's something to be proud of! :p

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Just happy I've got the collection now... was bugging me that I had the first two but not the others. Glad I got them cheap as well, they were something silly like £12 a pop a few weeks back. £10 for all three is pretty good.

Just sat and watched Extinction and Afterlife... Retribution has just started so I'm giving that one a go and hopefully get w review of the franchise up soon.

Afterlife is def the better of the sequels so far, just waiting for Retribution to play out now.

Nausicaä 08-02-13 02:27 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

^ Afterlife is my favourite out of the lot. Retribution was a step down but still enjoyed it.

The Rodent 08-02-13 02:37 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Yeah, been through the lot today... Retribution was a bit of a let down tbh... kinda boring in parts and there's little story going on.
It's all just a series of skits involving two groups who are just shooting guns at bad guys.

At least parts 1, 2 and 4 had some story to them.

Ranks:

Resident Evil

Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Resident Evil: Extinction

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Resident Evil: Retribution

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

I didn't mind what was going on, it was that terrible actress playing that woman in the red dress(can never remember the name) that got on my nerves, she was horrendous, needed someone else in that role.

The Rodent 08-02-13 03:04 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Mimi Chichi or something, yeah she was a bit annoying. She had nothing to do either, her role was just, sort of, there.

I found Sienna Guilleroy as Gill Valentine was proper wooden in Retribution though.

She was ok in Apocalypse, I kinda liked her in the role, but the fifth film she just stank something awful.
She's obviously an actress that needs a good director behind her to force her to act every scene over and over till she gets it right... Anderson obviously didn't do that.

Managed to get the full set of Romero's Dead films (Night, Dawn, Day, Land, Diary and Survival)...

... and Blade Runner Final Cut...

... £16 for the lot.

I need to reorganise the shelf now though, they won't fit :D

Sexy Celebrity 10-10-13 07:37 AM

What set? What does it look like? Post a picture.

The Rodent 10-10-13 07:43 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

I got each one singularly.
I don't think they do a Boxset... the original film Night Of The Living Dead is like rocking horse sh*t at the moment in shops and is becoming harder to get anyway as there is no actual studio that owns the rights to the film... I think there's about 10 different packaged versions that are available but each one is becoming rarer and rarer to get.

... and the store near mine has access to the whole lot of them, so I grabbed what they had in the shop while I could and ordered the two that weren't in stock to my house through the in-store computer, delivery is next week :D

You'll have to wait till next week for the pic when they arrive.

I'm going to hold off watching any of them until Dawn Of The Dead and Survival Of The Dead arrive, so I can watch all 6 in a row.

Watching Blade Runner right now though :D

Fun times.

The Rodent 10-14-13 08:31 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Certainly will be... loving having the whole set now.

I've checked online for the original film with what I said about how many versions there are. There are actually a couple hundred versions in DVD format.
Some are in colour as well but I prefer the original black and white.

At least they got the order right, I was half expecting them to send the Dawn remake. The guy in the shop didn't seem to know what he was on about so I was quite concerned he'd get the order wrong.

All is good though.

Want to watch them all now but I have pool later and don't have time :(

Tomorrow though, I'll be having a marathon (yay!)

Sexy Celebrity 10-14-13 08:42 AM

Yeah, I understand the situation about Night of the Living Dead. In the states, I've always found it in various different editions. Some look really cheap, some look awesome. I've yet to get a Blu-ray of it. It's also free to watch on the internet -- legally.

I've never owned it on DVD. I used to have it on VHS. I really like the movie. Once for Halloween I dressed up as the zombie in the cemetary at the beginning of the film -- I should find the picture.

I've never seen Night in color, but I want to.

I still prefer Return of the Living Dead out of all of the zombie movies out there, though. Night of the Living Dead is good, but the sequels -- even Dawn -- good for what they are, but I don't have any strong feelings for them really. Last one I saw was Land of the Dead, which I liked.

Have fun. DO A VIDEO REVIEW.

The Rodent 10-14-13 08:46 AM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Maybe. I've been experimenting with the video recorder and video maker on my laptop.

It may be a while before I get a video review together.

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

^ Nice series bargins you got there, enjoy your Dead marathon!

I've nearly completed the trilogy of the Dead on Blu-ray(I have Land of the Dead on director's cut DVD from Hong Kong but don't like it enough to upgrade, and didn't like Diary and Survival so will not be buying those) - only need to get Day of the Dead but keep hearing the British releases are not the correct ratios and so on, there has been a collector's edition released in America that is suppose to be good but currently waiting for the price to come down.

My favourite is my Night of the Living Dead Blu-ray, it's from Germany and comes in a digibook edition, black with neon green font, it's gorgeous.

Sexy Celebrity 10-14-13 05:28 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

Saw that Day of the Dead Blu-ray here in America last Halloween or the Halloween before last in a store (Target). Almost bought it, but don't care much for it.

Man Of Steel added to the collection.

Got the DVD Comic double pack.
Comic serves as a Prequel... cost £10, same price as the regular DVD so thought may as well.

http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225...THavBqupqg.jpg

Oh and, on second viewing, I like Man Of Steel even more.
I'm pretty sure there are a couple scenes on the DVD that weren't in the cinematic version... for some reason the first half makes more sense this time round.

Nausicaä 12-05-13 12:05 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

^ It shouldn't contain anything new as it's not an extended edition or says it's includes extra footage, so it has to be the same as was shown in the cinemas apparently and can't find any rated for additional scenes information from the BBFC.

The Rodent 12-05-13 12:09 PM

Re: The Rodent's DVD Collection.

I think maybe it's down to a lot of info in the first half was probably too much to take in on first viewing.

Watched it when I got home and it makes sense on this viewing rather than just bombarding the viewer with so much stuff you get lost in what they were trying to portray.

Definitely feels like a different movie on second viewing. Much more enjoyable sitting at home without having complete 'tards fiddling about, talking and rustling popcorn packets next to me while I'm trying to watch.
