It doesn't have all the details you describe, but there's a lot that's similar. The rifle shot scene is the last five minutes or so.
Yes, this must be the scene I (mis)remembered. I'm now pretty sure I combined the wagon train attck from Winchester '73 with this episode. It was a respectable man who took the long-range shot and killed the chief after everyone thought he had missed. The scope wasn't long, but it was very distinct that I hadn't seen on an 'antique' rifle before.
