Chinatown (Polanski, 1974)

Yeesh...tough to stomach this one, especially the ending.

Great film, but probably not one I'll be watching very often.

I hope this is true, I would like to see it again and find something new to appreciate in it.

This is one of those films which were probably really fresh and original at the time, but have been so over-hyped and so imitated over the years that they lose some of that freshness if you are watching it for the first time 30 odd years after it was first released.

I was bowled over by this movie.
First of all, it's heartening to see Nicholson before he started phoning it in. He did some real acting in Chinatown.
Second: Faye Dunaway. Oh my ferking gourd. She says more in the moment when she's sitting on the side of the bed than many actors do in entire films. Positively fantastic.
Third: the look at Old LA. I live in LA now, and seeing it as captured in this film is pretty awesome.
Fourth: the genre itself is fuller for this entry.

All in all: a classic for a reason.

Believe it not, the first time I saw this film was last year in my film survey class.

I got when i was like 8 from a gyms free video rental, didn't really understand but loved it, got out a year later, then on DVD when it came out. Definitely one of those films, for me at least, that is perfect everytime, if not better. We were shown it in a lecture and i was surpised how many people hadn't seen it, furthermore that when i told others how good it was they didn't agree. Also write my unit piece on it as a revision of the noir genre along with The Long Goodbye and also with The Wild Bunch, did quite well on it too.
